Pregnancy

May 5, 2013 in Beauty

I doubt I am the only person who has noticed, but there seems to be some special water about which when drunk, gets you pregnant.

I know at least 5 people who are pregnant.  The fact that 3 are celebrities is completely beside the point.  The fact that I am aware of 5 ovens baking a baby is really impressive.  I usually only know one.  And it is so many; E! news basically dedicates an entire segment to who is preggers.

And the fact that Kate Middleton’s 6 month pregnancy belly is the equivalent to my veggie burger, chips, Pepsi Max and dessert belly is just not very helpful.

But it got me thinking.  Pregnancy is a great time.  Except for all the things your body has to go through.  I mean, when I bake something in the oven for 30 minutes, I am finished!  Much less 9 months!

And it isn’t even just the energy factor.  It is also the stretching of skin, the drying of the skin, the sore boobs, back, ankles, everything.  Oh and the teenage breakouts are just the cherry on the top.

While pregnancy may be a wonderful, life changing experience, make sure to do the below to feel beautiful on the outside too.

First and most, most, most important: look after yourself.  The tendency with becoming a mum is to put everyone else first.  Make sure to relax during your pregnancy.  Like I said, you are making a little human, so sleeping-in, siestas and relaxing baths (not too hot) are the order of the day.

Next step, moisturise like the world will end if you don’t.  You may find you get dry, itchy skin.  You are also expecting your skin to stretch and stretch and stretch.  The best way to avoid stretch marks is to moisturise morning and night with a creamy body butter or cream.  Massaging the cream into your skin also helps with circulation.

You may start to notice dark pigmentation on your skin from all those hormones flying around.  Make sure to use a night cream or specific treatment to minimise hyperpigmentation.

The other thing that comes with the raging hormones (besides crying at commercials) is break outs and black heads.  Make sure to swap your cleanser for one that has clarifying properties to wash away any oil and a toner for your skin.  Facials are good too (and help the relaxation, self-pampering).

And finally a beauty tip for the birth (which I learnt from my sister).  You know after the birth, everyone will want to take happy snaps of you and bub and put it on Facebook a whole 5 minutes after squeezing the little sucker out.  And while all babies are adorable, sheer exhaustion spread across your face is probably something you would prefer to not be tagged in.  Made up eyes can make this all better, but the last thing you will want to do is apply mascara (you may actually poke your eye out at that stage).  Instead, get your eyelashes tinted, or even extended at the beauty therapist a few days before you are due (and it will last for 4 weeks for any fashionably late babies).  Your skin will be glowing, your eyes will pop and the Facebook comments will read “Congratulations!  And you look so amazing after giving birth, wish I looked like that!”

  1. Skin Clinic Rescue Balm Kosmea  50ml ($29.95) – this stuff is rich in all the good stuff to help with dry skin and can even be used on cracked nipples and sensitive baby skin.
  2. Hydro-Active Mineral Salts 284g Dermalogica ($38.50) – make sure you take some time to relax when you are pregnant, as it may be rare and few post the birth.  This is great to soak in, or even use as a body polish.
  3. Organic Rosehip Belly Oil Ayana Organics 50ml ($29.95) – Rosehip oil is great for scar reducing, so make sure to rub this over your belly daily with special attention to those stretch marks.
  4. Big Belly Butter Ayana Organics 250ml ($36.65) – this is great of dry and itchy skin.  It is rich and creamy and can be used every day from the moment you find out you are pregnant.  Just a little warning: no matter how good this smells, do not attempt to eat it.  Just trust me on this.
  5. Mumma & Bubba Organics mumma balm stretch mark cream Urban Rituelle 250g ($31.50) – this stuff has everything jam packed in.  We are talking rosehip oil for the stretchmarks, avocado oil for soothing, evening primrose oil for healthy skin and the list goes on.  Used daily during pregnancy and post birth, your skin will be as bouncy as before.
  6. Spotner Face 2ml ($29.95) – You may get hyperpigmentation during your pregnancy (dark spots on your hands or face).  This is great stuff to minimise these within 2 weeks of use.
  7. orange & cehami gel cleanser Endota 90ml ($39.00) – For any breakouts you get during your hormone ranging pregnancy, this stuff is great.  The native Australian cehami is a non-irritating plant ingredient for clearing oil and the orange is a natural toner for the skin.  Use it morning and night for clear skin.

And now for the competition!

To go into the draw to win the Ayana Organics Duo (Organic Rosehip Belly Oil and Big Belly Butter), in the comments below, share your best and worst about being pregnant.  Winner will be announced on Sunday the 26th of May!

Baby bumps are super chic!

Home Storage Solutions

April 21, 2013 in Lifestyle

I must be nesting already, because I have had the sudden urge to clean up the ENTIRE house – and have a place for everything! I just suddenly couldn’t stand that some things didn’t have their own special place to be stored.

I started in my wardrobe – shoes everywhere! What better way to clean up that mess, than these BenjiBox Clear Shoe Boxes. I can still see my shoes –  and the best bit – they’re neat and the boxes are stackable. Love that.

Then I moved into the Kitchen, probably where I spend most of my time in the house. I love to cook and bake. This Maxwell and Williams spice rack is a great way to store your spices. Mine were in the cupboard all standing up together. You then have to rifle through all of them searching for the one or two that you’re after. This spinning holder, makes it so much easier to find exactly what you’re after. Then we move on to this cool guy – the Voodoo Knife Block. He is super funky and comes in several different colours. My hubby had to have him for our kitchen!

Into the bathroom now, and there was nothing that irritated me more than having my hair straightener in a drawer with the cord wrapped around it. Always having to get it out, and then waiting for it to cool down before I could put it away again. This Everloc Hair Straightener Holder even has a spot for the cord plug to hang. Now to get something like this for my hairdryer!

Last but certainly not least, is this great IKEA Trofast Storage Combination. This one fit perfectly into the wardrobe in the nursery for our baby girl, so I used a combination of their large pink tubs with the smaller white ones. It’s great to be able to store all her clothes in there, and is versatile enough for us to be able to move out of the wardrobe and into her room when she is a little older to store all her toys.

1. BenjiBox Clear Shoe Boxes (5 for $49.75)  //  2. Raffaele Iannello Voodoo Knife Block ($99.95)  //  3. Maxwell Williams Spice it Up 17 piece set ($69.95)  //  4. Everloc Hair Straightener Holder ($34.95)  //  5. IKEA Trofast Storage Combination ($138.00)

What are your must have storage solutions?

Wardrobe malfunctions…? No thank you!

April 17, 2013 in Fashion

A wardrobe malfunction or outfit drama is embarrassing and absolutely nobody in their right minds would like to face one. That said, unless you have a personal valet following you around with multiple changes of clothing and shoes suitable for every weather, you’ll probably cop one or two in your life.

All women know that we really should carry a few essentials around with us in the depths of our handbag for emergencies, such as safety pins of all size and colour, bobby pins for unexpected wind gusts, baby wipes for removing spills from delicate clothing, and even a little bottle of clear nail polish to touch up and prevent further damage to laddered stockings and tights!

Now I’ll show you a handful of items which are for either after the emergency, or preventative, so you can cruise around in comfort, knowing that you’re not rocking an Erin Brockovich or ruining your favourite heels.

Hollywood Fashion Tape is a double-stick tape that can be used on the body and/or clothing. It’s said to be gentle on the skin, hypoallergenic and will not leave a sticky residue behind. The tape is pretty versatile and you can use it in so many different ways. Aside from your neckline, you can use it to cover up the gaps between buttons on a dress shirt, to hold your bra straps in place, to keep your loose fitting blouse from falling off your shoulders or to temporarily fold over/under your pants that are too long.

Spare Soles offer a great range of foldable ballerina flats and flipflops. The flats come packaged inside a wristlet that opens to a spare tote bag to store high heels. Perfect as an after-party shoe for nights out, weddings, formals and that old devil for the feet, Race Day.

Racer Back Bra Clips are the solution to wayward bra straps – you know those pesky straps which are visible when you wear a racerback singlet or even a tank top? Virtually invisible and available in different colours, the Racer Back Bra Clip means the straps on your favourite bra don’t become their own fashion statement.

Starlettos are a fabulous heel accessory which will ensure your stilettos are protected at any outdoor event! Perfect for racedays, weddings and garden parties, Starlettos are designed to help avoid the frustration of walking on grass in your favourite pair of heels!

Got a cat, or your car seat covers shed onto your fancy black work trousers? Lint removing sheets allow you to look fresh on the go. These little packets of individual sheets are designed to easily pick up hair, dust and lint from your clothing.

1. Target bra strap converters ($6.75)  //  2. Starlettos heel savers ($19.95)  //  3. Spare Soles Foldable Flats (from $14.95)  //  4. Lane Bryant Lint Removing Sheets ($8.00)  //  5. Hollywood Fashion Tape ($19.95)

What about you, dear reader? Worst wardrobe malfunction ever?

And what’s your ultimate outfit saving item?

Winter Forecast: Grunge Cowboy

April 11, 2013 in Fashion

My final intel.

Before I describe the grunge cowboy look, let me clarify that the US is in fact ahead of us in fashion.

You see, in my opinion, I think we are far more fashionable than the US.  I think it is the way we pull off the looks.

No offence to Americans, but they seem very staged in their outfits (obviously, there are always a few exceptions).

And Europeans (again, no offence) seem very uptight in their fashion.  Whereas I find us Aussies tend to wear trends better, with a relaxed “Oh I just grabbed this as I ran out the door” feel.  We have no problems mixing pieces that really shouldn’t go together, but actually look amazing!

So I always find it strange that we follow the US in fashion than visa versa.  But I have a friend in the fashion industry who knows everything and anything about fashion, and she confirms that we are last off the ranks (but we do a fine job of it).

So the grunge cowboy look.  Don’t think Aussie cowboy, more American out-West cowboy.  But trendy.  With some darkness.  It’s about pairing your much loved jeans with some more denim, some tan accessories, a faux-leather vest or jacket and a dark printed tee.

If you can’t handle it at 100%, turn down the volume with a statement piece.

1. Rhinestone Tank Grey Marle $69.95 // 2. Longline Destroyed Denim Shirt US$49.80 // 3. Spiked Faux Leather Moto Vest US$32.80 // 4. Zatchels Leather Barrel Bag $80.00 // 5. Bullet Studded leather ankle boot with double strap detail $180.00 // 6. Riders by Lee Bumster Bootcut $99.95 // 7. Stylestalker Ray Gun Sweater $129.00

Gotta have it or make it stop (a la Fashion Police)?  What are you stealing from this trend?

Stay chic,

Avi

Why don’t men like buns. And why you should!

April 10, 2013 in Beauty, Lifestyle

I like big buns and I cannot lie… (That song will now be in your head for the next seventeen hours. You’re welcome.)

Isn’t this illustration divine? Check out Inslee Hayes’ gorgeous art here

After another completely official Katy Potaty survey (yeah, I just asked my galpals on Twitter), I have come to the realisation that it’s not just my hubby who doesn’t like his lady’s hair in a bun. It’s MOST MEN!

According to my survey, men don’t go bun-anas for the bun for a few reasons. Firstly, they said that they like to touch our hair and head when our locks are flowing. If this is true, why do we ladies all love going to the hairdresser for that overpriced head massage? Why aren’t our blokes doing it for us?

The second reason stated that men who don’t like the bun think that we’re being lazy. Whaaaa? Um, have you seen the amount of effort that goes into a super-fly, super-high sock bun?! My arms get tired just thinking about all that teasing and tzooshing!

Now, I don’t actually understand why men would not like buns. Because we love buns. Women have loved buns for thousands of years, and we’ll probably love them for another thousand. The reasons are plentiful – they are easy-peasy, they keep your hair out of your face (hello, windy Winter), and they are an instant facelift if you pull them tight enough!

And there’s not just one bun, either. There are so many styles of bun, and there’s bound to be a few that suit YOU. Let’s check them out, shall we…?

This is the traditional sleek mid-head-height bun best known for featuring on every 8 year old girl at every Eisteddfod. Ever. It’s great for a quick fix to get your hair out of your face, but it’s not the most flattering at it’s simplest. This bun really does benefit from some volume, or a sweet hair accessory.

This one is the current bun de jour. A big, padded bun right on your crown says ‘I mean business. Big glamorous business.’ It can be worn tight, messy, with or without a fringe, even with braids woven through the top and sides for interest.

I personally love the high bun worn by celebs like Vanessa Hudgens, Whitney Port and Lala Vasquez and think it is a stylish and casual alternative to a fancy up-do. If you have anything less than super-thick hair though, you’ll need all the help you can get to pouf that bun up BIG!

So, what do you need to help hold that hair up high? Look for everything with the word ‘volume’ on the label. And I mean everything. Start with the wash and pump your tresses full of keratin, then scrunch in some voluminising mousse and blow dry those locks. Now comes the fun part – teasing and tossing! Once you’re looking like an extra from Dallas (the original series, of course), twist that hair right up to the very tippy-top of your head and pile it up any way you like! If you want to try something a little more structured, buy a few cheap bun-forms (also called donuts or rats – eeek!) and try them all out to see which one suits you – I like my nylon donut one the best, but I’ve had long-winded arguments with my bestie who prefers a foam and wire-covered form.

1. Moroccanoil Ceramic Barrel Brush ($24.60) // 2. GHD Air Hairdryer ($199.00) // 3. O&M Fine Intellect Shampoo (29.95) // 4. Witchery Crystal Headband – I have three of these, and they turn ANY hairstyle into something a little special! ($24.95) //5. Mimco Novella Clip ($29.95)

Two questions for you, dear readers…

Do you rock the bun? And do the men in your life love it?

Stay chic,

Katy

What on earth is BB Cream?

April 7, 2013 in Beauty

I’m pretty resistant to fads.  I never did the skirt over jeans thing.  And that went on for some time!

So when I heard of “BB Cream” I figured if I ignored it for long enough it would just go away.  First, it sounded scary.  BB.  What exactly is BB and why are they shortening it?  Must be bad.

Second, all the ads say it is a miracle cream.  Huge warning sign.  In my experience, miracles are very rare.  So anyone who claims something is a miracle is just trying to get you to buy it.

Third, I am a creature of habit.  I have stuck with my foundation routine since I was a teenager and attempted to cover up pimples.  (Don’t worry, I have just stuck with the routine and product line, not the same bottle of foundation.)

But I kept seeing this BB cream thing and it just wouldn’t go away.  And I figured as the Shop Me Chic Beauty Contributor, I couldn’t ignore something that clearly was around to stay.  And a miracle.

The best way I could describe BB Cream (it stands for Beauty Balm by the way) is through a story.

Once upon a time there was a girl named Goldilocks.  After overstaying her welcome with a bunch of Grizzlies, she went on a mission to find make up.

She first tried tinted day cream.  But she thought it was too light weight.

She then tried foundation.  But thought it was too thick.

She then tried Beauty Balm.  And it was just right.

Basically Beauty Balm is like a day cream which can reduce redness and work to reduce pigmentation on your skin.  Sometimes it also has some SPF to ensure that you don’t get any more pigmentation.  It also has light reflecting particles to make the skin on your face and neck appear brighter.

Then the scientists in the lab have thrown in foundation type coverage.  However, it isn’t thick, but manages to cover imperfections.  I usually have to break out my concealer, but with this stuff I didn’t.  Even though the consistency doesn’t seem to be thick, it somehow uses magic to smooth imperfections.

And the ultimate test.  When I wear foundation, I usually break out in pimples.  I have been testing a variety of BB Creams over the last two weeks and I am pimple free.  Except for the bugger on my cheek but I think that had to do with me devouring an Easter bunny while watching The Biggest Loser.

This stuff is really moisturising (but without sliding off your face).  So it is AMAZING if you are working in an air-conditioned office all day – no cracks or dry skin here.  However, if you are heading out into the humidity, or you are a grease monkey like me, it might be too moisturising.  If you are a grease monkey like me, just lightly dust with foundation powder.  I actually use less than I use with regular foundation and it is more to get the shine off than anything else.  And then it is perfect!

So BB Creams, you have convinced me.  Well done!

1.       Red Cover BB Cream Clearskincare ($30.00) – watch out, this stuff is deceiving.  It comes out white and when you smear it on it turns into foundation.  It is awesome at covering redness and pigmentation and is great to cover Easter Bunny pimples.

2.       Vitamin E Cool BB Cream The Body Shop ($21.95) – are you as obsessed with the Vitamin E range at Body Shop and wished it came in foundation.  Wish granted!  But FYI – this is a sneak preview, it will hit stores and online in May 2013.

3.       Pure Mineral Skin Perfecting BB Cream SPF 15  NATIO ($14.95) – this has a combination of Vitamin E, Jojoba and Shea butter to hydrate with Green Tea and Chamomile to reduce redness.

4.       Moisture White Shiso BB Serum SPF 25 The Body Shop ($48.95) – this is taking the miracle of BB Creams one step further.  It is a BB Cream with the power of Shiso Serum.  Shiso is an herb which brightens pigmentation.  Could you ask for more in a bottle?

5.       9 in 1 BB Cream Primer Rimmel London ($10.36) – on sale at Priceline this comes in three colours and covers, smooths, protects.

6.       Dream Fresh 8 in 1 BB Cream Maybelline New York ($15.95) – due to its unique gelled-water formula it has no heavy ingredients and is oil free while providing great coverage.

What beauty fad have you tried and loved?

P.S. Next month I am going to two posts!  If you want me to cover anything tweet Shop Me Chic or me with the topic or question.

Farewell from Sonia

April 5, 2013 in Uncategorized

As the title of this post suggests, I’m saying goodbye. After much careful thought and consideration, I’ve made the difficult decision to walk away from Shop Me Chic. But before I do, I’d like to say a few things…

Firstly, a huge and humble thank you to Melinda. Shop Me Chic was originally her idea that she graciously allowed me to join in with, and together we created this fabulous little place on the internet.

Melinda is warm hearted, hard working, caring, talented and genuine. You could not ask for a better business partner or friend. I have no doubt that Shop Me Chic will continue to thrive and grow whether Melinda runs it solo, with a new partner or team.

Next, I’d like to thank each and every one of you that stops by here to read our posts, tweets us or comments on our Facebook page. You’ve made this past year an incredible one and have helped build a wonderful community.

So why am I leaving?

Last year was an incredibly hectic one for me personally. We were planning our wedding, renovating and extending our home and I was going through some major changes and upheaval at my day job.

This year we got married and jetted off on our honeymoon. We spent four amazing weeks on the other side of the world and talked a lot about our lives back home. Our house still has so much work to be done in order to finish it. I still have major changes and upheaval ahead at my day job. I also have a new husband to enjoy and some very special friends I want to spend more time with.

All we really have in life is time and love, so we best spend our time with those we love.

I’ve absolutely loved my time here at Shop Me Chic, but that time has now come to an end. And so it is with a heavy heart I bid you all a fond farewell.

Please keep reading, commenting, tweeting and posting Shop Me Chic.

You make the internet such a chic place!

Autumn Makeup Trend: Let’s Get Vampy

April 4, 2013 in Beauty

It’s time to pack away the fake tan ladies!
Unfortunately we haven’t seen the end of the Twilight hype, one of this seasons hottest make up trends are dark vampy shades against porcelain skin

Both Dolce & Gabbana and Bottega Veneta embraced this trend for their A/W 2013 ready to wear collection. Think deep plum or rich red lips, a black red polish and dark lashes with a winged liner.

If you are brave, and don’t live in Far North Queensland, this trend suits the approaching Winter weather perfectly. Whether you are all in, or choose one over the over, leap into the new season with some of my Autumn beauty picks.

1. Face Of Australia Lip Quench Pure Plum ($8.45) from Makeup Express // 2. OPI Black Cherry Chutney ($19.95) from Hairhouse Warehouse // 3. Thin Lizzy Concealer Creme ($29.95) from Thin Lizzy Online // 4. Benefit They’re Real Mascara ($38.oo) from Adore Beauty //5. Glamour False Lashes ($8.50) from Lashes Online //6. MAC Studio Fix Fluid ($49.00) from MAC Cosmetics

This look is best worn with dark graphic prints, or classic style wear – Not convinced on pairing it with a cute pastel blouse, but hey, I say try anything once. Everything looks great with a little confidence, except tights as pants, they never look good.

So put that gradual tanner away and embrace this seasons hottest look. You might even bag yourself an Edward… or an Eric!

My Guilty Pleasure: Victoria’s Secret

April 2, 2013 in Fashion

So from my profile, you probably know that I may have a slight addiction problem with Victoria Secret.

It is also, then, no surprise that on my visit to the US, I may have spent quite a bit of cash (more like a wad) on several visits to Victoria’s Secret stores.

When it comes to working out at the gym, I am usually decked on in Victoria’s Secrets gear.  I absolutely love their trackies and hoodies.  Not to mention their yoga tights and cute tees and singlets.  (A word of caution, their singlets are pretty tight fitting so go up a couple of sizes if you want them to fit loosely.)

As for underneath (sorry for the impending visual), but my undies only consist of Victoria’s Secret.  And they usually have 5 for US$26 which I think is a great bargain for some really cute undies (or thongs).

While they are starting to open up in airports across the country, their clothing is still best bought via their online website.  Make sure to check out sales via their online e-mail subscription, as they ALWAYS have some promotion code where you can get more for less.

Happy shopping!

1. Pink Slouchy Crew US$44.50 // 2. Pink Lace Trim Thong Panty US$9.50 or Special 5/US$26 // 3. Pink Lace Trim Hipster Panty US$9.50 or Special 5/US$26 // 4. Pink Ruched Thong Panty US$9.50 or Special 5/US$26 // 5. Pink Ruched Bikini Panty US$9.50 or Special 5/US$26 // 6. Pink Water Bottle US$14.50 // 7. Pink St. Patrick’s Crop Tank US$34.50 // 8. Pink Classic Straight Leg Pant US$44.50

What is your favourite item?

Stay Chic,
