Geek Chic: Sonia’s Favourite iPhone Apps

October 11, 2012 in Lifestyle

I am definitely not a techno genius by any stretch of the imagination, but I do love my iPhone and I am on it constantly, much to my fiancé’s dismay.

If you were a fly on the wall in our loungeroom, each evening you would probably hear the same thing: “Can you put your phone away now?!” to which I will quickly put it down, only to pick it up again in the next ad break of The X Factor…!

So which apps do I constantly use? Well, several. But for the purposes of this post, I’ve narrowed them down to 5 which are all different, but all incredibly useful (and fun)…

1. SoundHound (Free)

Want to know the name of the song playing in a store while you’re shopping? Annoyed they didn’t announce the name of a song on the radio? Wondering what that song is on the Honda Civic television ad (I was, and it’s ‘Punching in a Dream’ by The Naked and Famous in case you wanted to know!)…?

Then SoundHound is the app for you!

Not only is the app free, but you can search for as many songs as you like (some other similar apps have limits on their free version). In the search result, you can click through to buy that song on iTunes and it also stores a history of all the songs you have looked up.

SoundHound is a must have app if you are a music lover, like me.

2. Instagram (Free)

When I wake up each morning, Instagram is the first app that I open.

It’s such a great visual medium and you can (literally) see what your friends, favourite bloggers or brands have been up to.

I’ll admit, it’s unleashed the frustrated photographer in me! I love to try and think of creative ways to snap photos, choose which filter to apply and think of witty or clever captions. The ability to share photos on Twitter and Facebook simultaneously is an added bonus.

If you aren’t on Instagram, I have only one question – why not? Get on there!

3. WordPress (Free)

A blog like Shop Me Chic is a 24/7 venture. People read our posts at all times of the day (or night) and if they are kind enough to take the time to leave a comment, then Melinda or I will endeavour to leave a reply whenever we get the chance. This is sometimes late at night or early in the morning, so it makes life much easier to reach for my iPhone and open up the WordPress app.

It’s a good way to stay on top of all things Shop Me Chic!

4. Etsy (Free)

I am obsessed with Etsy. You can literally find anything on there – new or vintage – such as jewellery, birthday cards, art, clothing, furniture…

And the best part? Every single seller I have dealt with has been beyond lovely. You can tell they adore what they do, as every item I have ever purchased has been beautifully gift wrapped and delivered with care and a thank you note – a sure fire way to win me over!

If you are planning your wedding, then I’d highly recommend you hop on Etsy. I’ve ordered my engagement party invitations and save the date cards from there, and I’ll also be ordering my wedding invitations shortly (thanks for the reminder!).

I’d also recommend Etsy if you are searching for a birthday card that’s a little different, or a gift for someone special.

5. Lumiè ($1.99)

After a little practice with Instagram, my photographic confidence increased to the stage where extra apps to trick up my photos were needed. In particular, I liked other people’s photos that had pretty light effects and so this search led me to Lumiè.

You can choose from several different light effects in different colours such as hearts, glitter, dots, stars and flowers (you can see why I had to download it, can’t you?!).

So if you’re into Instagram and photography, then consider investing in Lumiè.

Which apps are your favourite and why? Do you have any apps you can recommend?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx
