Wardrobe malfunctions…? No thank you!

April 17, 2013 in Fashion

A wardrobe malfunction or outfit drama is embarrassing and absolutely nobody in their right minds would like to face one. That said, unless you have a personal valet following you around with multiple changes of clothing and shoes suitable for every weather, you’ll probably cop one or two in your life.

All women know that we really should carry a few essentials around with us in the depths of our handbag for emergencies, such as safety pins of all size and colour, bobby pins for unexpected wind gusts, baby wipes for removing spills from delicate clothing, and even a little bottle of clear nail polish to touch up and prevent further damage to laddered stockings and tights!

Now I’ll show you a handful of items which are for either after the emergency, or preventative, so you can cruise around in comfort, knowing that you’re not rocking an Erin Brockovich or ruining your favourite heels.

Hollywood Fashion Tape is a double-stick tape that can be used on the body and/or clothing. It’s said to be gentle on the skin, hypoallergenic and will not leave a sticky residue behind. The tape is pretty versatile and you can use it in so many different ways. Aside from your neckline, you can use it to cover up the gaps between buttons on a dress shirt, to hold your bra straps in place, to keep your loose fitting blouse from falling off your shoulders or to temporarily fold over/under your pants that are too long.

Spare Soles offer a great range of foldable ballerina flats and flipflops. The flats come packaged inside a wristlet that opens to a spare tote bag to store high heels. Perfect as an after-party shoe for nights out, weddings, formals and that old devil for the feet, Race Day.

Racer Back Bra Clips are the solution to wayward bra straps – you know those pesky straps which are visible when you wear a racerback singlet or even a tank top? Virtually invisible and available in different colours, the Racer Back Bra Clip means the straps on your favourite bra don’t become their own fashion statement.

Starlettos are a fabulous heel accessory which will ensure your stilettos are protected at any outdoor event! Perfect for racedays, weddings and garden parties, Starlettos are designed to help avoid the frustration of walking on grass in your favourite pair of heels!

Got a cat, or your car seat covers shed onto your fancy black work trousers? Lint removing sheets allow you to look fresh on the go. These little packets of individual sheets are designed to easily pick up hair, dust and lint from your clothing.

1. Target bra strap converters ($6.75)  //  2. Starlettos heel savers ($19.95)  //  3. Spare Soles Foldable Flats (from $14.95)  //  4. Lane Bryant Lint Removing Sheets ($8.00)  //  5. Hollywood Fashion Tape ($19.95)

What about you, dear reader? Worst wardrobe malfunction ever?

And what’s your ultimate outfit saving item?

Winter Forecast: Grunge Cowboy

April 11, 2013 in Fashion

My final intel.

Before I describe the grunge cowboy look, let me clarify that the US is in fact ahead of us in fashion.

You see, in my opinion, I think we are far more fashionable than the US.  I think it is the way we pull off the looks.

No offence to Americans, but they seem very staged in their outfits (obviously, there are always a few exceptions).

And Europeans (again, no offence) seem very uptight in their fashion.  Whereas I find us Aussies tend to wear trends better, with a relaxed “Oh I just grabbed this as I ran out the door” feel.  We have no problems mixing pieces that really shouldn’t go together, but actually look amazing!

So I always find it strange that we follow the US in fashion than visa versa.  But I have a friend in the fashion industry who knows everything and anything about fashion, and she confirms that we are last off the ranks (but we do a fine job of it).

So the grunge cowboy look.  Don’t think Aussie cowboy, more American out-West cowboy.  But trendy.  With some darkness.  It’s about pairing your much loved jeans with some more denim, some tan accessories, a faux-leather vest or jacket and a dark printed tee.

If you can’t handle it at 100%, turn down the volume with a statement piece.

1. Rhinestone Tank Grey Marle $69.95 // 2. Longline Destroyed Denim Shirt US$49.80 // 3. Spiked Faux Leather Moto Vest US$32.80 // 4. Zatchels Leather Barrel Bag $80.00 // 5. Bullet Studded leather ankle boot with double strap detail $180.00 // 6. Riders by Lee Bumster Bootcut $99.95 // 7. Stylestalker Ray Gun Sweater $129.00

Gotta have it or make it stop (a la Fashion Police)?  What are you stealing from this trend?

Stay chic,

Avi

My Guilty Pleasure: Victoria’s Secret

April 2, 2013 in Fashion

So from my profile, you probably know that I may have a slight addiction problem with Victoria Secret.

It is also, then, no surprise that on my visit to the US, I may have spent quite a bit of cash (more like a wad) on several visits to Victoria’s Secret stores.

When it comes to working out at the gym, I am usually decked on in Victoria’s Secrets gear.  I absolutely love their trackies and hoodies.  Not to mention their yoga tights and cute tees and singlets.  (A word of caution, their singlets are pretty tight fitting so go up a couple of sizes if you want them to fit loosely.)

As for underneath (sorry for the impending visual), but my undies only consist of Victoria’s Secret.  And they usually have 5 for US$26 which I think is a great bargain for some really cute undies (or thongs).

While they are starting to open up in airports across the country, their clothing is still best bought via their online website.  Make sure to check out sales via their online e-mail subscription, as they ALWAYS have some promotion code where you can get more for less.

Happy shopping!

1. Pink Slouchy Crew US$44.50 // 2. Pink Lace Trim Thong Panty US$9.50 or Special 5/US$26 // 3. Pink Lace Trim Hipster Panty US$9.50 or Special 5/US$26 // 4. Pink Ruched Thong Panty US$9.50 or Special 5/US$26 // 5. Pink Ruched Bikini Panty US$9.50 or Special 5/US$26 // 6. Pink Water Bottle US$14.50 // 7. Pink St. Patrick’s Crop Tank US$34.50 // 8. Pink Classic Straight Leg Pant US$44.50

What is your favourite item?

Stay Chic,

Shop Your Own Wardrobe: part three

April 1, 2013 in Fashion

Let’s move into the accessory area of The List, shall we? I feel like we covered the clothing List quite well last time, and I loved the comments and suggestions from you lovely (and by all accounts, very attractive) Shop Me Chic readers.

My favourite and most-used (which really is what it’s all about, right?) accessory is a classic tan leather bag. But… and this is a big but, it doesn’t have to be tan. A leather handbag which you will use forever should be in a neutral colour and a classic style, but in this case, neutral is ANY COLOUR you want! If red is your fave, buy a butter-soft fire-engine red tote, and if you get all animal when thinking about leopard-print, then find yourself a ponyskin leopard bag. I won’t even be mad if you choose black, I promise! Seriously, I don’t think there are rules with handbags, other than ‘Does all my junk and then some fit in it?’ and ‘Will I want to carry this every day between now and the end of time?’ My good old tan Witchery Nicky tote fits the bill for me, because it works with fancy frocks and dirty denim, as well as being corporate-appropriate if the situation calls for it.

Also, handbags don’t need to actually be ‘handbags’. I have girlfriends without children who’ve thought nothing of carrying a lovely nappy bag as a handbag, and I’m quite partial to 3 Annies camera bags as a regular ol’ handbag. If it works, ignore what it’s called. But don’t let your new boyfriend know that you’re carrying a nappy bag around every day, might freak him out a leeeetle bit.

1. Sussan ‘Claudia’ in Mink $69.95 // 2. My Best Friend is a Bag Giraffe Print Shopper $320.00 // 3. Country Road ‘Indi Hobo’ in Ketchup $269.00

Next – shoes. Ahhhh… shoes, you ol’ devils. You see, I’m not actually a shoe-girl. I do love a few pairs of my shoes so much that I’ve considered sleeping with them on, but I don’t LOVE them the way other women do. In that Carrie Bradshaw way. And sometimes I feel like I’m missing out… like it’s something that ‘makes’ the girl more feminine, more pretty, more everything. I do try to get excited about shoes, but I think that my bad knees-hips-everything ortho means that I can’t be bothered getting super-excited about skyscraper pumps or teetering strappy heels. Plus, I’m not 19 anymore, thank goodness!

One of my darling girlfriends has a room bigger than my kitchen full of shoes… seriously. I am terrified of the day that hubby and I are invited over there, because he may just have a heart attack due to the shoeroom. But me, I’m quite happy with my much-smaller collection.

When it comes to choosing your essential shoes for The List, you really do need to think long and hard about the where, when and why. Where will you wear them? When will you wear them? And why are they so darn good? I favour cute and comfy nude ballet flats, a pair (or ten) of flat coral sandals to wear with frocks and casual outfits, some classy dark brown riding boots, and some adorable sneakers. Yes, sneakers can be adorable. With these four pairs of shoes, I can tackle any situation, and any outfit.

1. Spurr ‘Rhemy’ – a complete steal at $19.98! // 2. Chuck Taylor Allstar Lo Dainty in Navy $69.99 //3. Kosheen ‘Lauren in Tan $349.00 // 4. Witchery ‘Michaela’ in ‘Cosmetic’ $139.95

Disclaimer: Yes, those of you who’ve read my blog before will say WHERE ARE THE YEEHAW BOOTS? I have a pair of vintage (yep, they’re 31 years old, just like me!) cowboy boots which are the one wardrobe item I’d save if my house was on fire. These do not belong on The List. Like your mother’s wedding dress, or the collection of Air Force pins that you inherited from your grandfather, my boots aren’t really ‘things to be included on a List’. They are members of the family, and you don’t need any kind of justification from me what you do with them. Wear them to bed if you like. (Although the pins may prove slightly uncomfortable.)

The last (yep, only three categories for me on The Accessory List) thing I need to throw together an outfit using a very small capsule wardrobe is a scarf. Scarves are incredible, they can be used as neck-warmers, sarongs, knotted into necklaces, headscarves, turbans, baby-wraps, shade sails, tourniquets (yeah, probably don’t need that one so often), and pretty much anything else you turn your mind to! You can even use one as the ultimate ‘I’m so crafty’ show-off tool if you can knit or crochet!

Make sure that you have the following practical beauties in your scarf collection:

* a very light scarf for high summer when you still need to add a little glamour to an outfit, and can be used as a wrap when the sun goes down and you’re sipping cocktails on a balmy evening

* a heavy-duty chunky knit scarf. Nothing is cosier on a cold day. Nothing. (Except my delicious triple chocolate brownies straight from the oven. Shameless plug completed.)

* a glamorous printed silk scarf. Think Hermes or Pucci here, and use it for a headscarf when zipping around in a convertible, or tie to your regular handbag to take it from schleppy to swish!

1. Hermès Silk Twill scarf $545.00 (honestly, please don’t let me EVER catch you spending this kinda cash on a scarf!) // 2. Sportsgirl Snood in Mottled Blue $24.95 // 3. Sussan Lime animal print scarf $39.95 // 4. Tree of Life Blue and Orange Southwest Scarf $39.95

There you have it, Shop-Me-Chicers! That is The Accessory List which I absolutely, positively couldn’t live without! I promise, that if you compile your own Clothing and Accessory Lists, you’ll discover amazing new ways to wear things you almost forgot you owned, and you’ll be getting compliments here, there and everywhere!

How do you accessorise? Anything you just never leave the house without?

Stay chic, mwaah,

Katy

Baby Disney

March 19, 2013 in Children, Fashion

I’m sure you’ve noticed, but it seems all the cool kids are preggers at the moment.

Kate Middleton, Fergi, Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian and most importantly our very own Lifestyle Contributor Melissa.

So I dedicate this post to those pregnant ladies out there.  If there was ever a time to get embarrassingly excited about onesies, now is the time.

On a recent trip to the US, my husband and I couldn’t go past hitting up Disney World.  We were probably one of the very few who didn’t have a pram or child with us.

I have been and am completely obsessed with anything Disney.  Don’t worry; it isn’t to the point that my doona cover is bright pink with a picture of Cinderella on it.  But my TV cabinet is stacked full of Disney movies on DVD and God help my grocery budget if there is a Disney movie on offer at Woolies that I don’t have (but probably already watched several times).  At the age of 10, I even made my poor mum make me a ‘Cinderella’ dress…exactly like it is in the movie.  Mind you, this is before you could buy them from the stores.

So in reality, my husband went to Disney World with a child…me.  And the best bit (besides Cinderella, Ariel and Belle waving at me) was the most adorable onesies ever imaginable.  While I am not pregnant, or plan on getting pregnant any time soon, I almost bought several onesies just to be able to look and coo over them.

Could you think of anything cuter than your little bub wrapped up in a onesies with the adorable Winnie the Pooh all over?  I don’t think so.

1. Disney Dalmatians Hooded Jacket $24.00 // 2. Disney Marie Hooded Jacket $24.00 // 3. Mickey Mouse Polo One Piece for Baby – Personalizable US$19.50 // 4. Winnie the Pooh Coverall for Baby US$19.50 // 5. Minnie Mouse Ballet Flat Shoes for Baby US$12.50 // 6. Patch Disney Cuddly Bodysuit for Baby – 101 Dalmatians US$14.50 // 7. Thumper Disney Cuddly Bodysuit for Baby US$14.50 // 8. Minnie Mouse Swimsuit for Baby US$19.50

What is your favourite Disney movie?

(Mine is The Little Mermaid… Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat? Wouldn’t you think my collections complete? Wouldn’t you think I’m the girl, the girl who has everything?)

Keep your little bub chic!

Avi

Shop Your Own (Chic) Wardrobe: Part Two

March 13, 2013 in Fashion, Lifestyle

So, you followed my instructions like a good little Shop Me Chic-er, and culled all the craziness from your wardrobe? What’s next?

It’s time to build your wardrobe. (Yes, this means some serious shopping. Husbands, boyfriends, fathers and sons, turn away now!)

Now that that you have edited everything and the only slightly unwearable pieces in your closet are (hopefully) your wedding dress, one ‘I’ll fit into it in the future’ classic LBD, and some blingy statement platform heels that your Great Aunt Mitsi gave you, it’s time to find the gaps.

I will now present you with The Basics List. The Basics List is the utterly fabulous reason that I have so very many pairs of indigo jeans and white shirts.

(Please please do not equate basics with boring. These pieces are anything but. They are more like a canvas, if you will. A canvas that already has shape and colour, warmth and shadow. You can splash some more paint on if you like, but the canvas by itself is still making a statement about the wall that it’s on.)

The pieces on The List range from classics (blazers, tees and jeans) to more eye-catching items (printed scarves, colourful handbags), but they are all designed to play well with each other, and make transitioning from season to season that little bit easier (and cheaper) by only adding a handful of on-trend things. The List is also very subjective. If you’re a busy mother, you may not need the dirt-attracting (read: white!) pieces on My List, but you might stock up on more comfy layers. If you live in steaming-hot Port Douglas, you’d probably only own a light coat instead of a blazer, but you would add a few pairs of bathers and a floaty kaftan to Your List (and then you’d shoot me an email inviting me to come stay with you for the whole winter).

I’ll mention my clothing five faves today, and in a later post will share my thoughts on basic accessories. Let’s get started!

Firstly, and in my humble opinion, most importantly, jeans. Jeans are my best friend in Autumn, Winter and Spring (and even balmy Summer evenings sometimes)! Depending on the climate where you live, you’ll want to judge how important jeans are to you (and yes, I’ll completely allow jeggings – there are no ‘leggings are not pants’ rules here. Make your own damn rules, I say). Also, spend some money on jeans. I’m not saying jump on eBay and buy that insanely expensive pair of Gucci jeans (if you do, say goodbye to $5K!), more like find a pair of jeans that look good on you, FEEL GREAT on you, and splurge if they’re just a little outside your regular clothing budget. You’ll know ‘em when you find ‘em. My faves are from Mavi and NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans – cute huh?!), as they hug/hold in my butt, and aren’t too tight on my somewhat muscular calves. Find your own shape, ignore most of the trends (super-skinny and super-flared jeans rarely flatter non-clothes-horse models), and pick a colour that you love.

Next, you’ll need a white shirt, or three. Again, pick what works for you. I’m a huge fan of a slim-line button-down shirt with full-length sleeves, it’s the most practical style for me. I like to add a little polish to more casual shorts and skirts, and a crisp button-down does just that with minimal fuss. It also looks classically fab worn with dark jeans and riding boots, and can be tied at the waist over some of my striped maxidresses for an elegant twist on the latest nautical look. You might find that classic raglan-style Bonds white tees work for you, or perhaps a softer shell-top shape is more flattering. A white shirt in a style that suits YOU is a fail-safe.

That brings me to the third item on The List – maxidresses. Some men just don’t get the maxidress appeal, and if this is your husband/boyfriend/father/son, then tell them that I care little of their opinion. The maxidress is incredible. It is a whole outfit in one item, and often that item doesn’t need ironing. What more could you want? I’m fortunate that my significant(ly handsome) other has no problem with the few (ok, nine!) long tank-style dresses in my wardrobe, and often compliments me on how quickly I am able to get ready. It’s because of the maxidress, people!

When shopping for a maxidress, think of the following: will I be able to wear it with layers? will I be able to wear it during more than one season? and will it wash and wear well? You’ll want a maxidress which works with smart blazers, denim jackets, teeshirts and tank tops thrown over the top, and can be worn with sandals, wedges, ballet flats and boots. I know, it seems like quite the fashion ask, but a little bit of shopping around for a suitable maxi can save you HOURS of what-the-heck-should-I-wear time. You know, the time you spend stressing when you’ve decided that you want to wear that cute skirt but the top you normally wear with it is in the wash? That time. The whole wash’n'wear aspect will be of utmost importance when you discover the perfect maxidress for you, because you’ll end up wearing it more than once a week, just because it’s so darn easy.

My fourth basic is a knee-length skirt – I favour denim here. I have one that’s smart enough to wear to a corporate event with the above-mentioned white shirt and some nude pumps, but can also be worn with a cute printed top, a bunch of fun jewellery and my cowboy boots to a rodeo (I wish wish wish there were more rodeos in my neck of the woods. Ahhh, the beach-town life can be a drag sometimes.)

Last on My List is one of the most flattering pieces I own – a blazer. A classic blazer is on my list because I can wear it with pretty much everything, and even more importantly, wear it pretty much anywhere! I own a mid-charcoal-grey blazer, and it works with pretty frocks to give a tougher edge, AFL jerseys and jeans to ‘dial back the bogan’ when I’m at the football, and even summery shorts and tops if I’m wanting to dress them up a little. The key to finding a blazer that works for you and all your wardrobe is to steer clear of suit jackets – they are generally too tailored and polished to wear with anything other than corporate gear.

I found my wonder-blazer in the Menswear section of French Connection (I bought a size Small) and it’s a brilliant combo of structure, warmth and detail, at a lower price point than the women’s equivalent. Also, men’s blazers are brilliant for ladies who have slightly broader backs or bigger shoulders. Petite women should try the teen boys’ department of stores like Myer and David Jones for flattering blazers which are more casual than your usual suit jacket. Fabrics like twill, linen and jersey are still smart enough for the boardroom, but soft enough for a more casual look too, with the cuffs either pushed or rolled up. Oh, another thing… menswear tends to have more pockets, so if that’s your thing, get thee to Roger David straightaway.

1. 1&20 Blackbirds Always New Depths Maxidress (a complete steal at $49.95!) // 2. Country Road Urban Twill Jacket ($299.00) // 3. Sportscraft Sarah Oxford Shirt ($79.96 on sale!) // 4. Ezibuy Essentials Denim Skirt ($25.00 on sale!)

Did you already have some of these basics in your wardrobe? Is there something that I’ve missed that is a MUST-HAVE? Let us know in the comments below!

Stay chic,

Katy

Winter Forecast: Pastels

March 12, 2013 in Fashion

Okay, round 2 of my secretive, covert mission.

I donned my uber large black sunnies to remain inconspicuous and my mental notebook (plus a thousand layers – who visits NYC during the coldest freeze storm!).

I hit 5th Avenue, Times Square and Soho.  All for you.  So you are able to be on trend before the trend hits our shores.  All for you to be the fashionista of your friends and colleagues.

And when they ask how you knew, just tell them about the fabulous me.  Not going to work?  Okay fine, take all the credit!

The next trend to start rolling in is pastels.

Yes, I hear you.  Just when you get used to fluorescents, they dim the colours.  But don’t worry, these pastels are actually pretty.

My favourite store in the US, Forever 21 (mainly for the clothes but also for the shared feeling of never wanting to be older than 21) dedicated an entire floor to this trend.

I’m so grateful that one of the trends this winter has some colour.

1. Textured High-Low Shirt US$19.80 // 2. Prue Statement Stretch Ring $14.99 // 3. Hello Darling Set Of 2 Pastels: The First Corsage & Butter Wouldn’t Melt $34.99 // 4. Estele Embellished Sweater $79.99 // 5. 1&20 Blackbirds5th Avenue Tweed Shorts $54.95 // 6. Luichiny Free To Be Mint Gold Plated Peep Toe Platform Pumps US$85.00

Hot or not?  Which are you going to wear?

Stay a chic fashionista,

Avi

Shop Her Chic: Andrea from Fox in Flats

March 6, 2013 in Fashion

It’s that time of the month again – it’s time to Shop Her Chic! Today we have the gorgeous and foxy Andrea from Fox in Flats – the queen of navigating motherhood in style!

Hey there Chic-ettes!

I’m Andrea, the mother of two cute but crazy little boys, and my other ‘baby’ is Fox in Flats. Fox in Flats is designed to share tips, ideas and inspiration to make it much, much easier to navigate motherhood in style. I created it because after having my boys I fell into a motherhood-induced fashion rut, and couldn’t find a relevant resource to help me dig my way out of it.

Since its launch two years ago, Fox in Flats has grown to be a friendly and inclusive community of awesome women (not all of us are mums!) who’re all looking for similar style solutions and a load of time-saving tips and shortcuts.

Plus, we’ve been lucky enough to have had the support of mega-watt celebs like Dannii Minogue, Peter Morrissey and Roberto Cavalli who’ve shared their tips with us along the way.

I’d describe my style as classic with a rock-glam kinda twist.

My go-to basics are comfy skinny jeans with a t-shirt or tank, a tailored blazer, and quality shoes (flats of course, but when I’m not with my kids the heels are out in full force!). This classic silhouette works well for most women, and for me, emphasises my best bits, and hides my problem areas.

And I’ll team these basics with something that makes a “Hello, I’m here!” kind of statement – maybe a band t-shirt, or a pair of out-there sunnies.

I like to take the edge of with a pile of my favourite necklaces – heirloom pearls with a Tiffany’s Elsa Peretti heart pendant threaded through it, a locket containing photos of my boys, a diamond necklace made from my mum’s engagement ring after she passed, and a blingy Peter Lang number. A red lip glams it up (and distracts from my sleep deprived eyes!)

I’m mostly found rummaging around in my wardrobe and exploring how to combine my existing items in new ways instead of buying lots of new things.

The Fox in Flats Style Dares have been the driver behind this. They’ve forced me to really look at what I’ve got, and make the most of that. And in doing so, it’s helped me really discover my own unique style, and feel confident about it.

Head over to Fox in Flats to check out the Fox in Flats Style Dare a Day March challenge!
