Autumn Makeup Trend: Let’s Get Vampy

April 4, 2013 in Beauty

It’s time to pack away the fake tan ladies!
Unfortunately we haven’t seen the end of the Twilight hype, one of this seasons hottest make up trends are dark vampy shades against porcelain skin

Both Dolce & Gabbana and Bottega Veneta embraced this trend for their A/W 2013 ready to wear collection. Think deep plum or rich red lips, a black red polish and dark lashes with a winged liner.

If you are brave, and don’t live in Far North Queensland, this trend suits the approaching Winter weather perfectly. Whether you are all in, or choose one over the over, leap into the new season with some of my Autumn beauty picks.

1. Face Of Australia Lip Quench Pure Plum ($8.45) from Makeup Express // 2. OPI Black Cherry Chutney ($19.95) from Hairhouse Warehouse // 3. Thin Lizzy Concealer Creme ($29.95) from Thin Lizzy Online // 4. Benefit They’re Real Mascara ($38.oo) from Adore Beauty //5. Glamour False Lashes ($8.50) from Lashes Online //6. MAC Studio Fix Fluid ($49.00) from MAC Cosmetics

This look is best worn with dark graphic prints, or classic style wear – Not convinced on pairing it with a cute pastel blouse, but hey, I say try anything once. Everything looks great with a little confidence, except tights as pants, they never look good.

So put that gradual tanner away and embrace this seasons hottest look. You might even bag yourself an Edward… or an Eric!

Ravishing In Red (Lipstick)

September 20, 2012 in Beauty

There’s just something about a red lip, isn’t there? Something chic. Feminine. Dramatic. Beautiful. Classic.

A red lip never goes out of fashion. In fact, Miranda Kerr recently revealed that on date night with her husband (yes, Mr Orlando Bloom), she will simply pull back her hair, put on some eyeliner and finish with red lipstick.

Another favourite fashionista of ours, the fabulous Andrea from Fox In Flats, created her first ever Style Dare this time last year by – yep, you guessed it – daring her readers to wear red lipstick every day for seven days straight. And she’s at it again, celebrating the first anniversary of the Style Dares by reigniting the Red Lip Dare. Why? Andrea explains…

I’d been avoiding wearing red lipstick since the early ’90s, after a couple of boneheads at uni teased me about it. But challenging myself to give red lippy another go after all these years was great because it came with a very unexpected side-effect: I became more noticeable.

My regular local barista eyed me with an approving glint. The mums at school drop-off did a double take. People kept asking me “Where are you off to?” And the women in my boxing class at the gym struggled to keep up with me. Seems it’s true what they say: red makes you go faster.

But more importantly than other people noticing me, I became more noticeable to myself.

Sing it sister!

Now, let’s be realistic. A red lip is not for the faint hearted. You’ve got to commit. And maintain it.

“But how?!” I hear you cry (or whisper, depending on where you are right now).

There are many opinions out there, but you all know me when it comes to beauty – the simpler the better.

So here are my tips for a fab red lip:

  1. Exfoliate your lips (gently) beforehand. I use a lip scrub, but you could also brush your lips with a toothbrush or warm washcloth.
  2. Apply a little bit of lip balm, such as pawpaw ointment, and allow it to settle into your lips for a good 5 minutes or more. Enough time to pour yourself a drink!
  3. Line your lips with a lip liner and for extra staying power, colour in your lips with it too.
  4. Apply your favourite red lipstick. Blot with a tissue. Apply it again.

Make sure you have a small makeup mirror with you as well your lipstick. That way you can pop into the bathroom between courses or drinks to touch up your fabulous red lip.

Here are some lipsticks, glosses and liners to get you looking ravishing in red…

 1. Sportsgirl Lipstick in ‘Bombshell’ ($9.95)

Bombshell is the perfect name for this red lipstick. I own it myself and definitely feel like a glamazon when I wear it. Don’t let the tiny pricetag fool you – Sportsgirl lipsticks pack a punch when it comes to colour and the staying power is fantastic. I’d definitely recommend this one if you are dipping your toe into the world of bright lipsticks.

2. MAC Lipstick in ‘Russian Red’ ($36.00)

Russian Red is an iconic MAC lipstick, with its universally flattering shade of red and incredible staying power, it is simply a must own. I am a huge fan of MAC lipsticks. They are an investment worth making, as the quality is second is to none and they seem to last forever. Well, almost.

3. Australis Lip Liner in ‘Fire Cracker’ ($8.95)

Remember that a lip liner is essential for the perfect red lip, so make sure you own one like this Australis lip pencil. With claims like “long-lasting”, “smudge-free” and “anti-feathering” and an itsy bitsy pricetag to boot, run don’t walk.

4. Benefit Pocket Pal Stain & Gloss ($20.00)

This double duty diva has the world famous Benetint, a rose coloured lip and cheek stain, on one end and a clear lip gloss on the other. Simply apply the Benetint stain to your lips, let it dry and then finish with the gloss. Two-two easy!

5. Australis Lip Gloss in ‘Bollywood’ ($11.95)

Australis lip glosses are nifty little numbers, with their beautiful high pigment colours, glossy (not sticky) texture and lovely subtle fragrance of lychee. Another great product to add to your lip gloss collection which, if you’re anything like me, seem to all congregate in your handbag…and all seem to be in similar shades. Hmmm.

Pucker up and tell us! Did you take part in the Fox In Flats Red Lip Dare? What is your favourite red lipstick?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

Guest Post: Suz’s 5 Favourite Beauty Products

September 19, 2012 in Beauty

Today we are taking off our beauty blogging hats and handing them over to Suz who is sharing five of her favourite beauty products!

It’s spring time here in Australia and that means spring CLEANING time too! You don’t want to put old, bacteria ridden makeup on that lovely face now do you?  I’ve rounded up some of my favorite and most trusted beauty items that are a must have in any makeup bag.

1. Antoinette Bekos Dual Active Powder Foundation

Antoinette Bekos is Melbourne’s own Channel Ten Head of Makeup who just celebrated the launch of her own makeup line. The dual active powder covers and evens skin without caking. We’ve given up all our other powders in favour of this one.

2. QSilica REMOVE Makeup & Grime Cleansing Gel

At the end of the day you’re going to need something to get all those fabulous products off from your face and this is where QSilica’s Makeup removing cleansing gel comes in. You just need a small amount of product and it will wash away even the heaviest of makeup off with ease, and leaves your skin smooth and hydrated.

3. Clinique lash building primer

If you haven’t tried an eyelash primer before this one is for you. It moisturizes and preps the lashes for mascara – making the effect even bolder and longer. I can guarantee putting on mascara without this beauty first will never be the same again.

4. MAC Lipstick

Pick a shade, any shade! There’s so many to choose from MAC that you just can’t go wrong. Our picks are Vegas Volt – the perfect orange-coral shade for a night out and High Tea – natural with a light hint of pink perfect for everyday or with smokey eyes.

5. Benefit Hervana Blush Powder

4 of Benefit’s blushes (Divine Peach, Lucky Shell, Heavenly Rose and Berry Delight) combined to give you one perfect shade. It blends wonderfully and will give you the perfect, flirty rosy cheeks. They’re staying power is long wearing and you’ll probably never want to use another shade again!

You can find Suz tweeting at @xglossd and blogging over on Coco and Chino.

What beauty products are your ‘must haves’? Would you like to be Shop Me Chic’s next beauty guest blogger?

Stay Chic,

Melinda & Sonia (and Suz!). xx

Chicspiration: Lauren Conrad

August 9, 2012 in Beauty

As you probably know, Melinda and I consider Lauren Conrad to be one of our style icons. We absolutely love her look – whether it’s polished and ladylike, or laid back California beach girl. In fact, we featured Lauren in our second ever Celebrity Chic post.

Lauren is a self-made star. She made her TV debut as a high school student in the MTV reality series Laguna Beach, followed by her own spin-off series called The Hills. Lauren left the show on a high and went on to create The Beauty Department (a website otherwise known as girly heaven), write several fiction novels as well as style and beauty books, and design her own clothing lines which includes the gorgeous label, Paper Crown.

And that’s why today’s Chicspiration is Lauren Conrad!

Lauren Conrad: Braided Beauty

The Makeup

Lauren is the queen of liquid eyeliner. You could call it her signature look, as she tends to stick to one shade of eyeshadow and a slick of liquid eyeliner. She also usually has a subtle flush of colour on her cheeks and finishes with a beautiful lip colour.

To recreate this particular look, choose a lovely shimmery gold coloured eyeshadow and blend over the lid. Line the upper eyelid with a liquid eyeliner, ficking out slightly at the edge of each eye. Take your favourite mascara and give your lashes at least 2 coats for definition and pop. Swirl a pinky peach cream or powder blush on the apples of your cheeks. Finally, finish up with a nude pink lipstick or lipgloss and you are ready for your closeup!

For an easy step-by-step guide on using liquid eyeliner, check out this video tutorial by BellaSugar.

The Hair

To get the how-to for Lauren’s braided hairstyle, head on over to Fox In Flats where Melinda is guest posting.

In the meantime, here are some products to make you want to head for The Hills

1.  Benefit Posietint Lip & Cheek Stain ($28.00)

2. Benefit They’re Real! Mascara ($23.00)

3. Benefit Magic Ink Liquid Eyeliner ($20.00)

4. Napoleon Perdis DeVine Goddess Lipstick in Hess ($35.00)

5. Napoleon Perdis Color Disc Eyeshadow in Blushing Bride ($29.00)

Are you a liquid eyeliner legend? Or a bonafide braid expert? Share your tips with us!

Stay Chic,

The Friday Five

July 27, 2012 in Beauty, Children

Can you believe that we are coming to the end of another month already?

It’s been a big month for us this month – my big boy turned three! And has started to remind me daily, “Mum, I am a big boy now”.

On the last Friday of every month, Sonia and I round up our five favourite products for the month.

Here is my Friday Five for July:

1. French Vanilla Lip Macaron from MOR Cosmetics ($12.95)

It smells like vanilla and looks like a macaron (sort of). What more could you want in life? Seriously though, this lip balm has been my favourite to reach for this month plus when I ordered it from MOR they also sent out two body butter samples. Win!

2. Hess Fireman Toothbrush Timer from Little Boo-Teek ($14.95)**

I haven’t even received this yet so it hasn’t exactly been a favourite for July, but it was love at first sight! It is so adorable, holds your little ones toothbrush and has a flip timer to encourage brushing for the right amount of time. You can also get 15% off any Little Boo-Teek order just for being a Shop Me Chic reader! Simply use the codeword: CHIC15

3. Benefit Erase Paste ($26)

The baby has been teething this month and this little tub has been my saviour. To completely get rid of dark circles, it’s best to follow Erase Paste with an Instagram filter (I find ‘Walden’ to be quite reliable) and a colourful scarf to draw attention away from your sleepy eyes.

4. Tommee Tippee Fresh Food Feeder from Baby Shop Direct ($6.95)

Speaking of teething, this little device will become your best friend (well, your baby’s best friend actually). I like to freeze some natural yoghurt in a container and scoop it out into the mesh feeder. That and Brauers Teething Relief seems to keep the daytime teething tears at bay.

5. Vani-T Rapid 1 Hour Self Tan Mist ($36.95)*

At the beginning of the month I shared tips, tricks and tools for tanning at home. The Vani-T Rapid Self Tan Mist is still being used. In fact, I have even started leaving it on for two hours before washing off instead of one hour for a darker colour (though I am slightly olive-ish anyway). I am yet to have a streaky or disastrous application (yay!) and my fake tan hating fiance has even given it his tick of approval (approval for me to use, not him!). Next on my list to try is the Vani-T Bronzing Custard recommended by one of our beautiful readers, Ingrid.

What products have you been loving this month? Do you have any tips for teething, tanning or combating dark circles?

Stay Chic,

Melinda. xx

Chicspiration: Cheryl Cole

July 24, 2012 in Beauty

Welcome to the latest instalment of our beauty series, Chicspiration. We’ve previously featured the fabulous hair and makeup looks of Beyonce and Kourtney Kardashian, so now it’s time to cast our eyes to the UK…no, not to the Olympics! Come on now, which website did you think you were visiting?! To a pop star that I’ve had a girl crush on for quite some time.

Today’s Chicspiration is…Cheryl Cole.

Cheryl started her music career as part of the band Girls Aloud and has since forged a successful solo career. Cheryl’s latest single ‘Call My Name’ is getting high rotation on my iPhone right now and if you want a fashion hit of neon, floral and clashing prints, then I suggest you check out the music video. One word – HOT! And so is this hair and makeup look…

Image

The Makeup

This is a makeup look I would definitely wear and one that I think would suit most people. It’s simple and beautiful, and would be perfect for a night out on the town.

Firstly, blend a rosy/coppery/mocha coloured eyeshadow over the lid, winging it out slightly and also underneath the lower lashline. Line the upper and lower waterline of the eye with a great waterproof pencil to really define the eyes. Then go nuts with your favourite mascara to get those lashes fluttering up a storm.

Finally, finish up with a bubblegum pink lipstick or lipgloss and you are ready to hit the dancefloor!

The Hair

Cheryl has the most amazing hair. It is long, thick, shiny and she always rocks it with heaps of volume, so it makes a nice change to see Cheryl with her hair up and off her face. In this look, she is working the ultimate ballerina bun - high, full and textured.

To achieve a ballerina bun like this, you’ll need a hair donut. If you don’t have one, you can get one here. All you have to do is pop your hair up into a high ponytail, slide it through the hair donut, wrap it around and pin.

For the ultimate tutorial on the perfect top knot, check out this post by Christina from Hair Romance.

Now, here are some products to get your pop career Cheryl-inspired look started…

1. Benefit ‘Bella Bamba’ Blush ($28.00)

2. Napoleon Perdis ‘Long Black’ Mascara ($35.00)

3. Benefit ‘BADgal’ Waterproof Eyeliner ($20.00)

4.  Napoleon Perdis DéVine Goddess Lipstick in ‘Nymphe’ ($35.00)

5. Benefit Velvet Eyeshadow in ‘Buckle Bunny’ ($18.00)

Are you a fan of this hair and makeup look? Who would you like to see featured in the next Chicspiration post?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

Chicspiration: Beyonce

May 17, 2012 in Beauty

We have gone Beyoncé-mad here at Shop Me Chic (remember Melinda’s fab Celebrity Chic: Beyoncé post?)…and for good reason!

Motherhood really seems to be agreeing with Beyoncé. She has such a beautiful glow about her and a smile as bright as the sun. She’s having fun with fashion, which was evident at this year’s Met Ball – that showstopper Givenchy gown, anyone? Wow!

It wasn’t just the gown that caught our eye. It was the stunningly sleek and simple hair and makeup look that really appealed to us. A look that any Chicette could rock for any occasion.

Let’s break it down, y’all (sorry, that was my inner Beyoncé coming out)…

Image

The Hair

There’s something so sophisticated about a well styled ponytail, and Beyoncé is giving us a perfect example. It’s surprisingly easy to achieve, you just need a little patience…

  1. Wash and blow-dry your hair as you normally would, making sure to create a side part on whichever side suits you best.
  2. Take the time to section your hair into small sections and run your straightening iron over each bit two to three times to ensure it is poker straight.
  3. Tie your hair into a low ponytail. Take a small section of hair from underneath, wrap it around the ponytail to hide your hair tie and use bobby pins to secure underneath.
  4. Grab some hairspray and lightly spray your hair, smoothing down any uncooperative strays, and you’re done!

The Makeup

This makeup look says 3 things to me: eyes, cheeks, lips.

Eyes

  • Keep it simple and use a neutral eyeshadow that suits your skintone.
  • Using a liquid or gel eyeliner, hold your outer eye taut and glide the brush along the lashline. If you’re feeling brave, add a flick to the outer corners.
  • Finish with 2 to 3 coats of mascara. I like to use both a lengthening mascara and a volumising mascara to achieve fabulously fluttery lashes.

Cheeks

  • A universally flattering cheek colour is coral. If you haven’t got a coral blush, get one immediately and sweep it onto the apples of your cheeks.

Lips

  • To complement the cheek colour, choose a coral lipstick to make your pout pop.
  • give your lips some shine and help the staying power of your lipstick, add a lipgloss. You can go clear, but I tend to use one that is a similar colour to my lipstick to really amplify the colour.

Here are 3 products to help you get started…

Inglot Liquid Eyeliner in ‘25’

Benefit Blush in ‘Coralista’

MAC Lipstick in ‘Vegas Volt’

Are you ‘Crazy In Love’ with this look?

If you have a hair or makeup look you are loving that you would like us to recreate, feel free to email, tweet or Facebook us!

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

Colour Me Chic… Coral

May 4, 2012 in Beauty, Fashion

We kicked off our first Colour Me Chic post with turquoise and today we are bringing another one of the Shop Me Chic teams favourite colours – Coral!

If there is one way I love my coral, it’s on my nails, lips and cheeks. Benefit’s Coralista blush is flattering on any skin tone and smells amazing, a must have for your beauty cupboard!

Essie Haute as Hello from Nail Etc

MAC Costa Chic

Benefit Coralista

These three (very cute) accessories deserve a place in every woman’s wardrobe and are perfect for work or play.

Coral Cat Scarf from Miss Selfridge

Retro Rosie earrings from ModCloth

Bubble Bib Necklace from Etsy

These three pieces check off all of my current wardrobe wants – a cardi for Winter, coloured denim and a dress that can be paired with stockings and a blazer on those extra chilly days.

Alma Fringe Cardi from Nasty Gal

Skinny Jeans from ASOS

Coral Sweetheart Dress from Dorothy Perkins

What better way than to brighten up an outfit with a coral shoe? It doesn’t have to be a heel either, these Wittner flats or the ModCloth wedges are a perfect way to add a touch of colour without leaving your feet aching at the end of the day!

Miss Soho (in coral) from Peeptoe Shoes

Pear flats (in Sunset Leather) from Wittner

Draw The Line Wedge from ModCloth

And that’s my coral picks!

Want to join in with our Colour Me Chic fun? Tell us how you’re wearing your coral on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #colourmechic

As always, we love hearing your suggestions so let us know what colour you would like to see on our next Colour Me Chic post.
