Beach Bags

November 13, 2012 in Fashion, Lifestyle

We’re almost halfway through November (how did that happen?!) and for a lot of us, the warmer weather has well and truly hit. This means a lot of fun things being added to our agenda – wearing lovely summer dresses, eating plenty of ice cream and of course, lots of trips to the beach.

One essential item for a great day at the beach is the humble beach bag. It always has to be bigger than you think you need, especially when you consider everything you have to take with you: towel, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, cold drink…and multiply that by however family members you have!

Melinda recently featured this striped Seafolly tote in her Summer stripes post and I may or may not have purchased it. Yeah, you got me. I did purchase it (as a gift!) and it is awesome. It is a great size and it zips up to keep all your belongings safe.

There are so many cute bags out there, and I’ve had the fun job of rounding up 5 of the very best for you to tote around during your day at the beach…

1. Cotton On ‘Summer Lovin’ Tote (on sale $10.00) // 2. Seafolly ‘Boat House’ Tote ($29.95) // 3. Colette ‘You Look Lovely Today’ Tote ($29.95) // 4. Billabong ‘Going Places’ Bag from SurfStitch ($59.99) // 5. Condura Beach Bag from The Iconic ($29.95)

Have you had a trip to the beach yet? What kind of beach bag did you take?

Hats off to Summer

November 8, 2012 in Fashion

We recently dreamed about all the ways we would wear a floppy hat this Summer. At the beach, in the backyard, at a BBQ. Anywhere that starts with a ‘B’ basically…!

But what if you just can’t or won’t do a great big floppy hat? Use your head and simply downsize your hat!

The trilby (or fedora or panama) hat has been in fashion for nearly every summer season that I can remember and is probably one of the easiest styles of hat to wear.

Rachel from Redcliffe Style rocked one in her recent Get Her Chic guest post and countless celebrities are spotted wearing one on their off duty days. It looks cool with any outfit or accessory, so you’ve got to give it props for versatility. Not to mention the fact it’s a great disguise for a bad hair day.

The other smaller style of hat perfect for Summer is the cowboy hat.

Now, before you holler “Yeeha! Pass me that bottle of moonshine!” – which celebrity springs to mind when you think of the cowboy hat? None other than Elle Macpherson. So while I’m never going to look as good as Elle in a bikini, at least I will look just as good in a cowboy hat!

The cowboy hat is just as versatile as the trilby and is another classic Summer wardrobe item worth investing in.

So if you want to be at the head of the fashion pack this Summer, here are some little gems…

1. Cotton On ‘Lacey’ Cowboy Hat ($16.95) // 2. Billabong Essential Cowboy Hat from SurfStitch ($35.99) // 3. Roxy ‘Dillon’ Cowboy Hat (on sale $20.99) // 4. Miss Shop Trilby Hat from Myer Online (on sale $22.46) // 5. Country Road Fluro Band Trilby ($49.95) // 6. Witchery Colour Block Trilby ($49.95) // 7. Jendi Cowboy Hat from The Iconic ($29.95) // 8. Dotti ‘Palm Springs’ Trilby Hat ($19.95)

What kind of hat will you be wearing this Summer? How do you like to wear yours?

Summer Stripes

November 5, 2012 in Fashion

Just like leopard print, stripes are a bit like a neutral for me.

They can be worn day or night, dressed up or dressed down and when you keep to classic colour combinations (like navy and white – my ultimate favourite!), there is not much they won’t go with.

We have already shared a few stripey Summer favourites (in the form of shoes, swimsuits and PJs) and today we have six new pieces to incorporate into your Summer wardrobe.

Currently picks 1 and 5 are right on top of my stripey wish list – now I just need to figure out how to convince my fiance that they are included in my ‘essentials’ purchases!

1. Stripe Tote from Seafolly ($49.95) // 2. Ms Divine Sally Woven Stripe Hat from Birdsnest ($44.95) // 3. ‘Dance With Me’ Dress from Esther ($69.00) // 4. Stripe Twist Bikini Top from ASOS ($27.20) // 5. Rachel Body Con Dress from Cotton On ($29.95) // 6. ‘Ready or Naut’ Flat from Modcloth ($49.99)

The thing I love most about Summer stripes is the fabulous nautical type pieces (like this Seafolly tote!). Personally, I’ll take my stripes in any form (shoes, bags and dresses please!) as long as I can pair them with a pop of colour (like orange, red or green).

How do you take your stripes?

Not So Chic Playground Style

October 15, 2012 in Fashion, Lifestyle

Today I was supposed to be writing about Playground Style. In fact, I had already warned prepared my fiance that he would be taking a few snap shots of me to share on Shop Me Chic and that I needed him to be patient no matter how many times I asked “Can you just take a few more?”.

However it seems like the universe was against me. I spent the weekend battling head lice (my toddler’s head, not mine) and a stomach bug (which was mine). My darling fiance showed little sympathy to my condition and insisted we head off for a swim at the beach and a play at the park. I threw on jeans and a long sleeve tee, put on the biggest sunglasses I could find and tied my hair up messily. The last thing I thought before I left the house? It’s not like I am going to see anyone I know.

But I did! I was luckily enough to catch a ten minute chat with the beautiful Rachel from Redcliffe Style (we also featured her in our ‘Get Her Chic’ series earlier this month!) who is even more fabulous than she seems on her blog.

Quietly dying inside at the thought of my n0t so chic appearance! I had even tweeted just hours prior, “Kind of embarrassed by the state of my appearance today. Sorry world, too sick to care!”

So after my not so chic day at the beach and the playground, I’ve decided to share a few Summer wish lists that will make my next trip to the beach or park a little more chic, no matter how I am feeling!

1. Willow Wide Brim Hat from Cotton On ($14.95) // 2. La Rambla Puzzle Necklace from Ruby Olive ($45.00) //3. Blue/White ‘Barca’ from Soludos ($36.00) //4. Green Polka Dot Bag from Skipping Girl ($120.00)

I’ve never been much of a hat person but a wide brimmed hat is now at the top of my Summer wish list and there is something about those shoes that I just love. Some simple chic that are cute enough to make me smile yet practical enough to chase after my two boys.

What’s on your Summer wish list? What chic and practical pieces do you love to rock at the playground? Do you have any ‘running into people when you’re looking less than chic’ stories to share?

5 Casual Chic T-Shirts

August 14, 2012 in Fashion

While doing my research for the Celebrity Chic: Gwen Stefani post the other week, I couldn’t help but notice the incredible array of super cute t-shirts out there.

It got me thinking about how I used to be obsessed with printed tees. In particular, I had 3 awesome Sass and Bide tees that I used to rock with a denim skirt and Havi’s during the day and with jeans and heels on a night out. In fact, I happened to be wearing a printed t-shirt the night I met my now-fiancé. It was a hot pink tee with white writing that said ‘WILL WORK FOR SHOES’…!

I seemed to have drifted away from tees in the past few years, but looks like my research and reminiscing may have reignited my love for them.

The beauty of a great t-shirt is its versatility. It can be dressed down for day with shorts, a skirt or jeans and flats, or dressed up for night with a fabulous pair of dark skinny jeans, a blazer, statement necklace and heels.

Here are 5 tees that will take you from casual to chic…

1. Cotton On ‘Whip’ Tee in Grey ($19.95)

2. Topshop Floral Oversized Tee ($53.49)

3. ASOS ‘Meow’ Tee ($22.77)

4. ModCloth ‘Girl Fox’ Tee ($29.99)

5. Miss Brown ‘Rock’ Tee from General Pants ($59.95)

Have you got a favourite t-shirt you love to wear? How do you like to style your t-shirt? Tell us all about it!

Answer Me Chic: Hot Winter Hen’s Night

May 24, 2012 in Fashion

One of our lovely readers, Karina is getting married and we all know that an important part of the wedding plans (besides actually marrying the love of your life) is of course the Hen’s Night. Karina’s Hen’s Night is in July and she has asked us to find some cold weather appropriate outfits that are still smoking hot.

The key to any gorgeous Winter outfit is layers. This is especially true for nights out – you want a jacket for when you are walking from the restaurant to the bar and then you need to be able to throw it off and hit the dancefloor in a fabulous number with cocktail in hand. Also, remember that black is not boring – it’s chic and timeless and a great base for any outfit. You can make a statement with your accessories. And most importantly, have fun with this!

So pop the champers and crank up the music, here are some Hen’s Night outfits worthy of a big night out…

Outfit 1: The Print Dress

Prints are are a big trend for the coming seasons, so why not base your outfit around a gorgeous print dress like this one from Forever New. You can keep the rest of the outfit simple by adding a great coat, some ankle boots and of course a bit of bling! If you’ve got a spray tan happening, then get those pins out. If it’s a little too chilly, then simply add some black opaque tights.

1. Forever New ‘Erin’ Ring Set ($14.99)

2. Colette ‘Stitch Panel Enamel Turn-Lock Clutch’ ($34.95)

3. ASOS ‘Bauble Interlink Circle Drop Earrings’ ($30.60)

4. Forever New ‘Rosie’ Dress ($199.99)

5. Cotton On ‘Lucci’ Cocoon Coat ($79.95)

6. Zu ‘Phoenix’ Ankle Boot (on sale $90.00)

Outfit 2: Dressy Denim

You can’t go wrong with a great pair of jeans. Go for dark denim to make it dressy, add a fabulous top, a great pair of heels and you are good to go. What’s better is that by going for separates, you can mix and match them with other items in your wardrobe.

 1. Forever New ‘Aaliyah’ Charm Bracelet ($19.99)

2. Bardot ‘Night Leopard’ Top ($59.95)

3. Mavi ‘Alexa Sophisticated Stretch Jean’ from Birdsnest ($139.95)

4. Colette Sequin Turnlock Clutch ($34.95)

5. Supre Cuffed Sleeve Blazer ($50.00)

6. Dotti Covered Platform Heel ($59.95)

Outfit 3: A Fab Coat

This coat caught my eye and I thought it was a beautiful base for an outfit. Surprise everyone by revealing a pop of neon underneath and a leopard print clutch, and work that dancefloor like you mean business!

 1. Mimco Crystal Dome Stud Earrings ($89.95)

2. Ally Fashion Laser Cut-Out Skater Dress ($29.99)

3. Dotti Basket Stitch Cream Coat ($129.95)

4. PeepToe Crystal Ring ($49.00)

5. Forever New ‘Millie’ Clutch ($39.99)

6. Wittner ‘Zachary’ Heels ($179.95)

I hope I’ve been some help for you Karina, but more than that – I hope you have the best night out with your girls!

Answer Me Chic: Flat Out

May 15, 2012 in Fashion

One of our lovely loyal readers, Eloise recently had ankle surgery and had been getting around in a moonboot until now. Her doctor has given her orthotics to wear in her shoes, and so Eloise has asked us to find her some cute flat boots to see her through the winter months.

Here are a few different styles that will be able to work back with any outfit you already own and maybe even inspire a few new ones…

Flat Ankle Boots

Flat ankle boots look great with skinny jeans or leggings tucked in, or with tights and dresses. Classic colours such as black and tan are always in fashion and why not add a bit of fun and go for a bright colour or interesting print like my personal favourite, leopard.

Cotton On ‘Holly’ Ankle Boot

Therapy ‘Bryant’ Ankle Boot

Wittner ‘Sydel’ Ankle Boot

Flat Knee High Boots

The knee high boot is such a flattering length of boot for most people and definitely a must-have in your shoe-drobe. Flat knee high boots are great for winter weekends or casual weekdays, and you can never have too many colours or styles.

Dotti ‘Buckle Up’ Knee High Boot

RMK ‘Zola’ Knee High Boot

Valeria Grossi ‘Eden’ Knee High Boot from The Iconic

Flat Over The Knee Boots

If you want to make a statement with a boot, then go over the knee!! Try them on and make sure they elongate your leg so that you walk out feeling like a Victoria’s Secret model with legs for days…What? A girl can dream!!

Tony Bianco ‘Pia’ Over The Knee Boot

Forever New ‘Ollie’ Over The Knee Boot

Ko Fashion ‘Laken’ Over The Knee Boot from Shoe Shed

We hope you’re back your feet (literally) very soon Eloise, and in the meantime make the most of the cooler weather and rock your flat boots in style!!

Take Me From The Office To…

March 16, 2012 in Fashion

I always say that a dress is an instant outfit. You put one on and you’re good to go. This is essentially true, but it’s all about what you add to that dress that can transform it from office appropriate to ready for anything.

Seeing as it’s Friday and the weekend is nearly upon us, I’ve picked this gorgeous leather Portmans number which will Take Me From The Office To…

Leather Fit And Flare Dress, Portmans, $249.95

…Drinks With The Girls

This is the best opportunity to have fun with the dress. And what could be more fun than a pop of colour? POPS of colour!! Go wild with neons and leopard print and have a ball with your besties.

1. Fluro Skinny Belt, ASOS, $9.73

2. Gatsby Ankle Boots, Zu, $170.00

3. Leather and Pony Clutch, ASOS, $48.66

…Dinner With The In-Laws

Time to tone down the rockstar and turn up the ladylike style. Add a cute belted cardigan, some suede heels, your sweetest smile, some polite conversation and you are sure to win Daughter In Law Of The Year (if that even exists).

4. Angie Cardi (Deep Teal), Cotton On, $29.95

5. Teore Heels, Wittner, $139.95

6. Twiggy Bow Belt, Dotti, $15.95

…Date Night With The Other Half

Time to break out the leopard print once again (like we need an excuse) and unleash the feline within. Before you know it, your prey will be like putty in your paws…wait. What were we talking about again…?! Oh yeah, date night. Well, same thing really. Rrrreeeeooooowwww.

7. Interstellar Choker, Mimco, $239.20

8. Leopard Print Skinny Belt, ASOS, $9.73

9. Pisa Booties, Tony Bianco, $159.95

And so there you have it: 1 dress that can be changed up 3 ways by simply adding 3 different items. Seems like such a simple equation that could be managed even over a cocktail…

Stay chic,

Sonia

Autumn Accessories

March 7, 2012 in Fashion

Autumn is officially here. To be honest, I’m kind of excited about it because the cooler weather brings the opportunity to wear more layers and…more accessories!!

Fashion is headed in a beautiful direction this season. There’s a lot of texture, jewel tones and vintage inspired detailing. Think ladylike and luxe.

Not quite ready to switch out your light and bright summer items for warm winter wear? Why not ease your way into the next season by updating your wardrobe with a few lovely transeasonal accessories.

Wide Brim Hat

The most common question asked about hats is: where would I wear one? I asked myself this very question while debating whether or not to put a leopard print hat on lay-by. The answer? Anywhere!! To a BBQ get together with friends on a cool Friday evening. To coffee with your besties followed by a spot of window shopping on a Saturday afternoon. To the park with the kids on a cool Sunday afternoon. Not to mention on any day of the week when you’re having a not-so-hot hair day. You’ve just got to have confidence.

While browsing the shops a couple of weekends ago, I was so impressed with the hats by Rubi at Cotton On. Not only are they super stylish, but they are also an extremely affordable way to buy into the trend. Available in Grey, Teal and Black, it’s this Bright Barberry colour that caught my eye…

Whitney Wide Brim Hat, Rubi @ Cotton On, $13.97

…and yes, I did lay-by that leopard print hat!!

Oversized Scarf

The oversized scarf is such a great way to take a simple outfit, such as a singlet, jeans and ballet flats, to the next fashion level. It can be draped around the neck, used as a shawl, or belted around the waist.

Sussan have the most amazing selection of accessories this season and this scarf is a great example. The Oversized Ikat Scarf features gorgeous shades of green and can be worn all the way through until Spring and even Summer.

Oversized Ikat Scarf, Sussan, $39.95

Statement Necklace

Another great way to trick up any outfit. If you follow fabulous fashionistas on Twitter, Instagram or via their blogs, you will notice that their outfit may be fairly simple but their necklace is anything but.

Diva are known for having the latest in accessories at affordable price points and this necklace is no exception. An online exclusive, the Autumn Multi Stone Collar Necklace features warm, rich colours and is a beautiful finishing touch to a transeasonal outfit.

Autumn Multi Stone Collar Necklace, Diva, $34.99

Coloured Tights

A trend walking its way into our lives this season is coloured tights. You can colour your pins every colour of the rainbow inexpensively and automatically change the look of every outfit you currently own.

Forever New have got this trend covered and their Microfibre Tights come in Black, Fuchsia, Cobalt Blue, Red, Ink Blue, Mustard, Purple and Peacock (as seen below).

Microfibre Tights, Forever New, $12.99

Vintage Inspired Belt

My name is Sonia and I’m a belt-a-holic. If I can belt it, I will. And so should you.

A belt is a great way to define or create a waist. You can also change the look of a dress by simply adding or changing a belt. This Dotti number features a beautiful vintage filigree design buckle and comes in Black and Cream.

Verona Filigree Belt, Dotti, $19.95

Mustard Bag

Mustard is not just a tasty condiment to spice up your food; it is also one of the colours of the season. So get ready to spice up your wardrobe.

Without a doubt, mustard can be a little overwhelming in the form of a dress or skirt or tights, so the next best way to incorporate this colour is with a bag. This Colette Accessories tote is a super chic, super cute addition to your Autumn Accessories.

India Bow & Belt Tote, Colette Accessories, $59.95

So tell me, will you buy into any of these Autumn Accessories?

Stay chic,

Sonia
