Shop Your Own (Chic) Wardrobe

February 27, 2013 in Fashion, Lifestyle

Did you know that an official Katy Potaty survey (ie. I asked all my girlfriends) shows that most women wear only 30% of their wardrobe, 90% of the time? What is the rest of that stuff doing?!

The main reason that we don’t wear everything in our closet is because we think it’s ‘unwearable’. Whether it’s super-fancy frocks for balls (and who goes to them very often?), or those jeans you just know will fit you… one day, we all have items taking up valuable wardrobe real estate. If every time you look in your wardrobe, you see racks, drawers, shelves and rails of clothing that you don’t wear, it affects how you feel about yourself and your personal style. There’s no time like the present to sort that out and get yourself more organised, so let’s get started! (Added bonus, the new Autumn-Winter ranges are hitting stores this month, and most retailers have great Summer sales on at the moment, so there are plenty of opportunities to find those ‘wardrobe gap’ pieces right now!)

Shop your own wardrobe

The very first thing you need to do is take a good, hard, HONEST look at what’s in there. And I mean HONEST. Will you ever really wear that velour blazer if you live in Darwin? Do you really think that stretchy halterneck gold top will ever come back in fashion? Pull all the definite no’s out, throw ‘em in a big bag and be kind to your local op shop.

(Please note, the above pictures were found on eBay, and these heinous items do not, I repeat DO NOT, belong to me. The worst thing in my closet right now is the puff-paint-embellished cut-off denim vest and shorts combo which I haven’t worn since I was 14. I’m saving them for my unborn daughters. I’m sure they’ll be delighted.)

Next, look at the maybe pile, and assess according to wearability, and your emotional connection. Is your ‘ideal goal weight’ outfit a suitable and realistic one (please ignore me if you’re planning on being in the 2013 season of The Biggest Loser, you definitely need that ‘ideal goal weight’ dress)? Can your used-to-be-favourite Little Black Dress be altered enough to make it more stylish and flattering to your current body shape?

Your favorite uncomfortable shoes, your grandma’s silk Pucci scarf from the 60′s and that funky felt hat you sometimes wear on bad hair days – all in the maybe pile. Whatever it is, if your heart goes pitter-pat when you put it on, keep it. But (and this is a bit of a recurring theme today) be HONEST with yourself, and forget about trends – they come later.

The next step is to make sure you can see what you have! Sounds like quite a simple task, but ohhhh-boy is it hard to do in reality! So many women over-shop, because they don’t know what they own. They end up buying duplicate, sometimes triplicate (sometimes more, shhh!) items because they don’t recall what they already have. Which would of course explain the seven (7!) coral shift dresses and five pairs of tan wedges in my wardrobe right now. I can justify them all, I promise. (Do as I say, dear SMC readers… definitely not as I do.)

Clear space around each group of items, and try to keep items together, based on style and then colour. Once you can see everything in your closet (and hopefully by now, it’s all pretty wearable stuff), you can also see the gaps!

Oh hello there, space between my black corporate dresses and my royal blue corporate dress… would you like me to fill you with a cute navy frock from Cue? Of course you would. And you there, Mr Snazzy Yellow Blouse, you’d like a chartreuse companion…? OK!

You can get even friendlier with your wardrobe now, asking if anyone out there would suit a light summer scarf… and when seven of your tops shout a resounding YES, then you have all the incentive you need to go buy a light summer scarf! Maybe you notice a few classy belts hanging up there still wearable, on-trend and ready to go, but your denim jeans and shorts shelf isn’t looking so crash hot, well what are you waiting for? Get some jeans and shorts, woman!

I’ll be back here at Shop Me Chic in the next few weeks to talk more about shopping your own wardrobe, and finding those basics we all should have. And by ‘should have’, I mean ABSOLUTELY NEED.

Have you recently done a good cull of your wardrobe, and found items which you had completely forgotten you owned (and if you’re anything like me, still with price tags attached)? Did you discover a hidden gem? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

Stay Chic,

Katy x

Summer Casual Chic

December 4, 2012 in Fashion

The days are getting hotter, and there’s really no better feeling than slipping out of your work wear after a long day and into some comfy casuals to head down to the beach for a sunset walk or to wander down to your local café for a gelati.

But just because you’re going casual doesn’t mean you can’t also be chic.

You can still incorporate the biggest trends of Summer 2012-13 – think neon, metallic and prints – with classic pieces to create a fabulous outfit while still being incredibly comfortable.

Here are some casual chic items to get you started…

1. Witchery Summer Low Back Dress in Coral ($129.95)

I love a dress that you can just throw on over your bathers (or nothing at all!) and it looks glam just as it is.

2. Novo ‘Seattle’ Sandals ($59.95)

Neutral with just the right amount of beading to give these sandals some lift.

3. Sussan ‘Carpenter’ Linen Shorts in Blush ($49.95)

Linen is such a lovely Summer fabric and these fab shorts come in a variety of colours including blush, lagoon (blue), crimson and golden kiss.

4. Seduce ‘Jet-Setter’ Shorts from Jour et Nuit ($109.95)

A great pair of tailored black shorts are always in style. An investment piece for sure.

5. Billini ‘Hannah’ Sandals in Leopard from StyleTread ($19.95)

Leopard print is always in fashion (in my opinion!) and at this price, you can afford to buy them in every colour.

6. Forever New ‘Bethany’ Floral A-Line Skirt ($49.99)

I love a good a-line skirt that sits above the knee. Fun, flirty and feminine.

7. Dotti Twist Strap Maxi Dress ($59.95)

Another fantastic “throw it on and go” dress in the maxi form. Love the stripes and the twist strap detail.

8. Forever New ‘Willow’ Neon Trim Swing Tank in Fluorescent Lime ($29.99)

I adore a swing tank – they are stylish yet forgiving! And this Forever New number is right on trend, with its pop of neon, which comes in lime or coral.

9. Esther ‘Beach Time’ Tank ($49.00)

Another cute stripey number that would look great with denim cutoffs or tailored shorts.

What’s your favourite casual chic outfit?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

Summer Stripes

November 5, 2012 in Fashion

Just like leopard print, stripes are a bit like a neutral for me.

They can be worn day or night, dressed up or dressed down and when you keep to classic colour combinations (like navy and white – my ultimate favourite!), there is not much they won’t go with.

We have already shared a few stripey Summer favourites (in the form of shoes, swimsuits and PJs) and today we have six new pieces to incorporate into your Summer wardrobe.

Currently picks 1 and 5 are right on top of my stripey wish list – now I just need to figure out how to convince my fiance that they are included in my ‘essentials’ purchases!

1. Stripe Tote from Seafolly ($49.95) // 2. Ms Divine Sally Woven Stripe Hat from Birdsnest ($44.95) // 3. ‘Dance With Me’ Dress from Esther ($69.00) // 4. Stripe Twist Bikini Top from ASOS ($27.20) // 5. Rachel Body Con Dress from Cotton On ($29.95) // 6. ‘Ready or Naut’ Flat from Modcloth ($49.99)

The thing I love most about Summer stripes is the fabulous nautical type pieces (like this Seafolly tote!). Personally, I’ll take my stripes in any form (shoes, bags and dresses please!) as long as I can pair them with a pop of colour (like orange, red or green).

How do you take your stripes?

Stay Chic,

Melinda x

Summer PJs

October 30, 2012 in Fashion

If you tuned into yesterday’s post, you will know that my bank account is looking on the lighter side these days.

You see, Christmas is my favourite time of year. And I like to go all out with decorations and gifts. Especially since becoming a mum. We are also moving into our new house in less than a month’s time and I am determined to have it furnished and perfectly home-y from the day dot. Plus, shopping for furniture and homewares is way too much fun!

So while I’m buying Christmas decorations and new towels and researching coffee machines (I’ve definitely decided on a Nespresso!), my fiance reminded me that we also have our wedding in less than a year which brings a whole lot of extra expenses (I’m just glad he didn’t utter the dreaded ‘B word’… budget!).

So in cutting down expenses, I am trying to stick to just the essentials. And being that Summer is coming up and we are also moving to Townsville in a few weeks time, I figure that a few sets of Summer PJs are definitely counted as essentials… right?!

 1. Mini Stripe Nightie from Country Road ($39.95) //2. Sail Away Striped Cami from Frankie & Nicole ($29.00) // 3. Stretch Lace Knee Length Chemise from Target ($25.00) // 4. Shoe Fetish Mini Short from Peter Alexander ($29.90) // 5. Sail Away Capri Pant from Frankie & Nicole ($29.00) // 6. Minnie Tank from Peter Alexander ($39.90)

Have you stocked up on cute PJs for Summer? Are you from Townsville? Tell me, exactly how hot can I expect the weather to be?

Stay Chic,

Melinda. xx

Not So Chic Playground Style

October 15, 2012 in Fashion, Lifestyle

Today I was supposed to be writing about Playground Style. In fact, I had already warned prepared my fiance that he would be taking a few snap shots of me to share on Shop Me Chic and that I needed him to be patient no matter how many times I asked “Can you just take a few more?”.

However it seems like the universe was against me. I spent the weekend battling head lice (my toddler’s head, not mine) and a stomach bug (which was mine). My darling fiance showed little sympathy to my condition and insisted we head off for a swim at the beach and a play at the park. I threw on jeans and a long sleeve tee, put on the biggest sunglasses I could find and tied my hair up messily. The last thing I thought before I left the house? It’s not like I am going to see anyone I know.

But I did! I was luckily enough to catch a ten minute chat with the beautiful Rachel from Redcliffe Style (we also featured her in our ‘Get Her Chic’ series earlier this month!) who is even more fabulous than she seems on her blog.

Quietly dying inside at the thought of my n0t so chic appearance! I had even tweeted just hours prior, “Kind of embarrassed by the state of my appearance today. Sorry world, too sick to care!”

So after my not so chic day at the beach and the playground, I’ve decided to share a few Summer wish lists that will make my next trip to the beach or park a little more chic, no matter how I am feeling!

1. Willow Wide Brim Hat from Cotton On ($14.95) // 2. La Rambla Puzzle Necklace from Ruby Olive ($45.00) //3. Blue/White ‘Barca’ from Soludos ($36.00) //4. Green Polka Dot Bag from Skipping Girl ($120.00)

I’ve never been much of a hat person but a wide brimmed hat is now at the top of my Summer wish list and there is something about those shoes that I just love. Some simple chic that are cute enough to make me smile yet practical enough to chase after my two boys.

What’s on your Summer wish list? What chic and practical pieces do you love to rock at the playground? Do you have any ‘running into people when you’re looking less than chic’ stories to share?

Stay Chic,

Melinda. xx

5 Sandals for Summer

October 8, 2012 in Fashion

We have been banging on about Spring a lot lately but today we are throwing ourselves even further into the warmer weather and talking Summer.

I am so looking forward to spending Summer days at the beach and Summer nights enjoying BBQ’s and bubbly. I’ve already mentioned that my Spring Summer uniform will consist of pops of leopard and today I have another Summer essential (though perhaps that should read Summer obsession) of mine, the sandal.

Summer sandals, best paired with a slight tan and bright toes.

As I indulged in a little online shopping research for this post, my fiance dared to utter the words “Why do you need another pair of sandals, didn’t you buy two new pairs last week?”.

Luckily for me, his attention quickly turned from my sandal addiction to the Bathurst telecast leaving me to shop research in peace (no doubt, we will come back to that conversation later so if you have a valid excuse I could use, I would love to hear!).

1. Mooloola Caveman Sandals from City Beach ($19.00 on sale!) // 2. Tony Bianco Jangle Flat Sandal in Tan/Fluro Green ($89.95) // 3. Verali Dallas in Gold from StyleTread ($49.95) // 4. Novo Sissy Flat in Tan/Coral ($49.95) // 5. Saltwater Sandals in Yellow from Lady Pinwheel ($84.00)

To save my bank account and my relationship*, I’ve decided to let you choose my next pair. I’ve already got two pairs of tan Mooloola sandals which I love (and highly recommend!) and am awaiting ‘Sissy’ to arrive on my doorstep which leaves 2,3 or 5. And really, how is a girl supposed to choose between neon, sparkles or yellow? All three are a must have for Summer!

Which pair should be the next addition to my sandal collection? How do you justify more shoes to your other half? What do you think of our new-look images?

Stay Chic,

Melinda. xx

*This is a joke of course. He knew what he was getting into when he proposed!

Leopard for Spring

October 1, 2012 in Fashion

Firstly, can you believe we are in October? Pinch and a punch for the first day of the month… and all that jazz.

We are celebrating the first day of October with a post on one of our true loves… leopard print!

You may have noticed how much Sonia and I love a spot of leopard – recently we have featured leopard print for your iPhone, leopard print jeans and even a leopard print hand bag.

Now that the cooler days are well behind us, I’ve packed away my leopard scarf and leopard loafers to make room for some leopard print Spring essentials.

The key to wearing leopard print is to pick one statement piece (leopard print shoes are very easy if animal prints are out of your fashion comfort zone) and pair it with neutrals or block colours.

My Spring Summer ‘uniform’   is going to consist of pops of leopard print paired with orange, navy and white.

LeopardPrintForSpring

1.Betsey Johnson Animal Wayfarer Sunglasses from Urban Outfitters ($55.00)

2. Urge Abbey Leopard Sandal from StyleTread ($89.95)

3. Motel Leopard Printed Skater Skirt from ASOS ($59.34)

4. Mini Oxfords from Nasty Gal ($78.00)

5. Pounce on The Opportunity Top from Modcloth ($34.99)

And of course, don’t forget the stunning Carter flat from Keilana Skye Shoes which we featured throughout our Birthday Bonanza giveaway.

What’s making your Spring Summer uniform this year? Are you a leopard lover like Sonia and I?

Stay Chic,

Melinda. xx

A Chic Feature: Shabby Sisters

September 24, 2012 in Fashion

Putting together this feature was a little bit of a déjà vu moment for us, as we featured this sparkly brand not long after Shop Me Chic was born! Shop Me Chic has certainly come a long way since then and so have Shabby Sisters, stocking plenty of beautiful new pieces. We had a chat to Kylie about Shabby Sisters, their upcoming arrivals and the jewellery piece we should all own this Summer!

Tell us a bit about Shabby Sisters.

Shabby Sisters was created through our frustration at a lack of affordable jewellery.

While disposable jewellery was plentiful, quality jewellery was really limited. Our belief was, and still is, that quality jewellery should be ‘affordable’ not ‘unattainable’ to everyone. With this is mind, we set about creating our first Shabby Sisters’ Collection of unique and beautiful pieces at affordable prices. Four years down the track we have become so much more. While we continue to provide affordable quality collections, we have incorporated our own unique style of statement pieces that can be worn on their own or layered with other jewellery pieces.

We also want our collection to evolve from a pair of earrings or a necklace, to a sentimental piece that becomes part of our customers story and creates emotion and holds their memories.

What pieces of jewellery do you consider to be timeless and classic?

Pearls, pearls and pearls.  Did we mention pearls?! There are very few outfits that pearl jewellery can’t be used to accessorise. Unfortunately people still shy away from pearl jewellery because of the age-old belief that they are ‘too good to be worn everyday’ or that they remind them of their Nana.

Pearls really are the stable piece of every jewellery box.  If there were just one piece of jewellery that we all should own, it would be a pair of pearl studs. They are elegant and versatile, they don’t need to match with your other ‘gold or silver’ jewellery, they come in all shapes, sizes and colours and most importantly they are very affordable.

What is also really unique about pearls is that unlike other gemstone, they are created from a living creature.  This adds such an individual element to every pearl.  Like us, no two pearls are the same.

Describe the Shabby Sisters woman.

When she gets dressed, she starts with her accessories and everything else falls into place. She is elegant, yet modern and led by her own style not a fashion trend. She is creative and unique.  She is feminine but strong.   She is anything but shabby.

What can we expect to see on the Shabby Sisters website in the coming months?

Lots of colour and texture. There will be a huge infusion of colour in our Spring/Summer Collection in the coming months.  We will also be incorporating a range of textures that we have not had before in our collections.

While the luxurious turquoise and peach palette will be a strong element, don’t put those pearls away just yet because towards the end of Spring/Summer we will also see a revival of pearls and vintage styled pieces.

What piece of jewellery should we all own for Spring/Summer?

A statement necklace!  It can take you from the playground to the boardroom with a simple change of outfit!

Our favourite look at the moment is dressing up a basic t-shirt, jeans and a pair of wedges with a statement necklace.  It is understated glamour!

When choosing a statement necklace, look for one with a range of texture and or colour to make it stand out.  The key to wearing a statement necklace is to wear it with confidence and own it!

1. Moroccan Nights Bracelet Stacker Set in Yellow ($15.00)

2. Marine Goddess Necklace ($45.00)

Tweet and ‘like’ Shabby Sisters on Facebook and Twitter and view their entire range on the Shabby Sisters website!

Do you have any statement necklaces in your accessory draw? Could you see yourself wearing one of our Shabby Sisters picks?

Melinda & Sonia. xx

A Chic Feature: KeilanaSkye Shoes

September 14, 2012 in Fashion

Here at Shop Me Chic, we are all for chasing your dreams and making them reality. That’s exactly what Candy from KeilanaSkye Shoes did – leaving her career in IT to pursue her love of fashion, in particular shoes. Candy is one savvy businesswoman, taking everything she (and every other woman out there) didn’t like about shoes and creating beautiful, stylish shoes that are actually comfortable. What a concept! We had a chat with Candy to find out more…

Your website says “a feminine edge meets comfort” – what makes KeilanaSkye shoes comfortable?
Firstly, I design my heels and wedges with platforms to lower the net heel height.  This means the foot is on less of an angle, which lessens the strain on the foot, the calf muscle, knees and hips.  It does help your entire body balance better as well.  You’re more inclined to tilt forwards when wearing stilettos without any platforms.  When wearing heels, it’s generally the ‘ball of the foot’ that takes the brunt of it; so I add padding and cushioning to the insoles and under the ball of the foot.  Functionality and practicality play a huge part in it as well.  A lot of women can’t fit standard pumps properly, so I design heels and wedges with adjustable slingbacks and ankle straps, anklets, lace ups and ankle boots, as a way to help secure the shoe to the foot.  When the shoe is secured to your foot properly, it lessens the strain on your toes, as women tend to clench and strain their toes to keep their heels on their feet.  This makes them easier to walk in as well.  The materials used also play a part; leather is breathable and molds to the wearers foot shape.  If you’re wearing heels that you don’t wear socks with, you need breathable materials inside the shoe (the lining, insole and sock), otherwise your feet will continually sweat and blister.  I love the look of a high heel, so I try to maximize comfort, without loosing the high heel aspect.

Where did you draw your inspiration from for the new collection, ‘The Carter Collection, Wish You Were Here – Part II’?
The name of my collection is a tribute to a young family member.  Design wise, my ideas were drawn from all around me; on the street, in magazines, some designs have been in my head for a while and it just needed perfecting and sometimes it happens by chance.  If I fall in love in with a colour or a material, then I’ll use it.  I did want to build on top of my previous collection, using more colour and detail.  I made sure this collection had a selection of bold and neutral colours, as well as textured prints, while maintaining my own style; a feminine edge.

You debuted at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this year. What was that experience like?
It’s a lot of work; from weeks beforehand till weeks after.  But it’s fantastic.  I met a lot of great people, saw a lot of amazing designs (and models) and it has opened a lot of doors for me.  Being my debut, it was a huge learning curve, so next time I’ll know exactly what to do.

Which celebrities would you love to see wearing a pair of KeilanaSkye heels?
I’d love to see any woman in KeilanaSkye shoes.  Just seeing a woman on the street or out at dinner in my shoes, would really make my day.  I’d definitely get my camera out.

What advice would you have for a woman wanting to start up her own company?
Be patient, be realistic and don’t give up.  I say this to a lot of people!  Be prepared to put in the hours and stick to your guns.  You’re the only person who knows what’s ‘in your head’, so trust your own instincts, but do ask for advice when you need it.  Most of all, do something different and have a niche.  If you do the same as everyone else, it increases your competition.  Expand and grow slowly and if you can, stay away from the banks.  So many businesses end up in too much debt and go into receivership.  You can start off small and grow on a small budget.

Here are the KeilanaSkye shoes we have our eyes on:

1.  Summer Cutout Pump in Burnt Coral ($269.00)

2. Carter Flat in Metallic Leopard Print ($199.00)

Check out the entire range of The Carter Collection, Wish You Were Here – Part II from KeilanaSkye Shoes on their website, follow them on Twitter and ‘like’ KeilanaSkye Shoes on Facebook.

You could win yourself a $100 voucher to spend at KeilanaSkye shoes by entering our Birthday Bonanza giveaway. Come on over and tell us: How do you spoil yourself on your birthday?

Are you a shoe lover? Which shoe from KeilanaSkye’s latest collection do you have your eye on?

Stay Chic,

Melinda & Sonia. xx
