Shop Her Chic: Andrea from Fox in Flats

March 6, 2013 in Fashion

It’s that time of the month again – it’s time to Shop Her Chic! Today we have the gorgeous and foxy Andrea from Fox in Flats – the queen of navigating motherhood in style!

Hey there Chic-ettes!

I’m Andrea, the mother of two cute but crazy little boys, and my other ‘baby’ is Fox in Flats. Fox in Flats is designed to share tips, ideas and inspiration to make it much, much easier to navigate motherhood in style. I created it because after having my boys I fell into a motherhood-induced fashion rut, and couldn’t find a relevant resource to help me dig my way out of it.

Since its launch two years ago, Fox in Flats has grown to be a friendly and inclusive community of awesome women (not all of us are mums!) who’re all looking for similar style solutions and a load of time-saving tips and shortcuts.

Plus, we’ve been lucky enough to have had the support of mega-watt celebs like Dannii Minogue, Peter Morrissey and Roberto Cavalli who’ve shared their tips with us along the way.

I’d describe my style as classic with a rock-glam kinda twist.

My go-to basics are comfy skinny jeans with a t-shirt or tank, a tailored blazer, and quality shoes (flats of course, but when I’m not with my kids the heels are out in full force!). This classic silhouette works well for most women, and for me, emphasises my best bits, and hides my problem areas.

And I’ll team these basics with something that makes a “Hello, I’m here!” kind of statement – maybe a band t-shirt, or a pair of out-there sunnies.

I like to take the edge of with a pile of my favourite necklaces – heirloom pearls with a Tiffany’s Elsa Peretti heart pendant threaded through it, a locket containing photos of my boys, a diamond necklace made from my mum’s engagement ring after she passed, and a blingy Peter Lang number. A red lip glams it up (and distracts from my sleep deprived eyes!)

I’m mostly found rummaging around in my wardrobe and exploring how to combine my existing items in new ways instead of buying lots of new things.

The Fox in Flats Style Dares have been the driver behind this. They’ve forced me to really look at what I’ve got, and make the most of that. And in doing so, it’s helped me really discover my own unique style, and feel confident about it.

Head over to Fox in Flats to check out the Fox in Flats Style Dare a Day March challenge!

Ravishing In Red (Lipstick)

September 20, 2012 in Beauty

There’s just something about a red lip, isn’t there? Something chic. Feminine. Dramatic. Beautiful. Classic.

A red lip never goes out of fashion. In fact, Miranda Kerr recently revealed that on date night with her husband (yes, Mr Orlando Bloom), she will simply pull back her hair, put on some eyeliner and finish with red lipstick.

Another favourite fashionista of ours, the fabulous Andrea from Fox In Flats, created her first ever Style Dare this time last year by – yep, you guessed it – daring her readers to wear red lipstick every day for seven days straight. And she’s at it again, celebrating the first anniversary of the Style Dares by reigniting the Red Lip Dare. Why? Andrea explains…

I’d been avoiding wearing red lipstick since the early ’90s, after a couple of boneheads at uni teased me about it. But challenging myself to give red lippy another go after all these years was great because it came with a very unexpected side-effect: I became more noticeable.

My regular local barista eyed me with an approving glint. The mums at school drop-off did a double take. People kept asking me “Where are you off to?” And the women in my boxing class at the gym struggled to keep up with me. Seems it’s true what they say: red makes you go faster.

But more importantly than other people noticing me, I became more noticeable to myself.

Sing it sister!

Now, let’s be realistic. A red lip is not for the faint hearted. You’ve got to commit. And maintain it.

“But how?!” I hear you cry (or whisper, depending on where you are right now).

There are many opinions out there, but you all know me when it comes to beauty – the simpler the better.

So here are my tips for a fab red lip:

  1. Exfoliate your lips (gently) beforehand. I use a lip scrub, but you could also brush your lips with a toothbrush or warm washcloth.
  2. Apply a little bit of lip balm, such as pawpaw ointment, and allow it to settle into your lips for a good 5 minutes or more. Enough time to pour yourself a drink!
  3. Line your lips with a lip liner and for extra staying power, colour in your lips with it too.
  4. Apply your favourite red lipstick. Blot with a tissue. Apply it again.

Make sure you have a small makeup mirror with you as well your lipstick. That way you can pop into the bathroom between courses or drinks to touch up your fabulous red lip.

Here are some lipsticks, glosses and liners to get you looking ravishing in red…

 1. Sportsgirl Lipstick in ‘Bombshell’ ($9.95)

Bombshell is the perfect name for this red lipstick. I own it myself and definitely feel like a glamazon when I wear it. Don’t let the tiny pricetag fool you – Sportsgirl lipsticks pack a punch when it comes to colour and the staying power is fantastic. I’d definitely recommend this one if you are dipping your toe into the world of bright lipsticks.

2. MAC Lipstick in ‘Russian Red’ ($36.00)

Russian Red is an iconic MAC lipstick, with its universally flattering shade of red and incredible staying power, it is simply a must own. I am a huge fan of MAC lipsticks. They are an investment worth making, as the quality is second is to none and they seem to last forever. Well, almost.

3. Australis Lip Liner in ‘Fire Cracker’ ($8.95)

Remember that a lip liner is essential for the perfect red lip, so make sure you own one like this Australis lip pencil. With claims like “long-lasting”, “smudge-free” and “anti-feathering” and an itsy bitsy pricetag to boot, run don’t walk.

4. Benefit Pocket Pal Stain & Gloss ($20.00)

This double duty diva has the world famous Benetint, a rose coloured lip and cheek stain, on one end and a clear lip gloss on the other. Simply apply the Benetint stain to your lips, let it dry and then finish with the gloss. Two-two easy!

5. Australis Lip Gloss in ‘Bollywood’ ($11.95)

Australis lip glosses are nifty little numbers, with their beautiful high pigment colours, glossy (not sticky) texture and lovely subtle fragrance of lychee. Another great product to add to your lip gloss collection which, if you’re anything like me, seem to all congregate in your handbag…and all seem to be in similar shades. Hmmm.

Pucker up and tell us! Did you take part in the Fox In Flats Red Lip Dare? What is your favourite red lipstick?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

Shoe Trend: White Shoes

September 13, 2012 in Fashion

We have been all about colour lately:  coloured blazers, coloured nails, coloured flats and coloured Spring scarves.

Today we are going back to basics and talking white. White shoes to be specific!

While Spring is big for neon and pastels, our friend Maria from Crashing Red (and previous Get Her Chic blogger) says that white shoes are the next big thing. And Maria knows her stuff!

You can follow Maria on Twitter here

We’ve got you covered with white flats, heels, sandals and even a pair of brogues (and you can head on over to Fox In Flats to see Andrea sporting white brogues plus tons of inspiration and tips on how to wear them).

1. I See Your Point loafer from Modcloth ($42.99)

2. Siren Hellier Hidden Wedge Sneaker from StyleTread ($159.95)

3. Kidman Heel in White Chicago from Tony Bianco ($159.95)

4. K Jacques St Tropez Leather Sandal from Net-A-Porter ($207 approx)

5. Bronx Brogues from ASOS ($53.41 on sale)

Tip: (And common sense really!) Do not wear white shoes to the park. I thought I was rather “on-trend” sporting white flats with my mint jeans earlier this week… let’s just say, they are not so white now!

Do you have any tips for keeping your white shoes in pearly white condition? Do you have any white shoes in your wardrobe? Snap us a picture, we would love to see!

Stay Chic,

Melinda. xx

Chicspiration: Lauren Conrad

August 9, 2012 in Beauty

As you probably know, Melinda and I consider Lauren Conrad to be one of our style icons. We absolutely love her look – whether it’s polished and ladylike, or laid back California beach girl. In fact, we featured Lauren in our second ever Celebrity Chic post.

Lauren is a self-made star. She made her TV debut as a high school student in the MTV reality series Laguna Beach, followed by her own spin-off series called The Hills. Lauren left the show on a high and went on to create The Beauty Department (a website otherwise known as girly heaven), write several fiction novels as well as style and beauty books, and design her own clothing lines which includes the gorgeous label, Paper Crown.

And that’s why today’s Chicspiration is Lauren Conrad!

Lauren Conrad: Braided Beauty

The Makeup

Lauren is the queen of liquid eyeliner. You could call it her signature look, as she tends to stick to one shade of eyeshadow and a slick of liquid eyeliner. She also usually has a subtle flush of colour on her cheeks and finishes with a beautiful lip colour.

To recreate this particular look, choose a lovely shimmery gold coloured eyeshadow and blend over the lid. Line the upper eyelid with a liquid eyeliner, ficking out slightly at the edge of each eye. Take your favourite mascara and give your lashes at least 2 coats for definition and pop. Swirl a pinky peach cream or powder blush on the apples of your cheeks. Finally, finish up with a nude pink lipstick or lipgloss and you are ready for your closeup!

For an easy step-by-step guide on using liquid eyeliner, check out this video tutorial by BellaSugar.

The Hair

To get the how-to for Lauren’s braided hairstyle, head on over to Fox In Flats where Melinda is guest posting.

In the meantime, here are some products to make you want to head for The Hills

1.  Benefit Posietint Lip & Cheek Stain ($28.00)

2. Benefit They’re Real! Mascara ($23.00)

3. Benefit Magic Ink Liquid Eyeliner ($20.00)

4. Napoleon Perdis DeVine Goddess Lipstick in Hess ($35.00)

5. Napoleon Perdis Color Disc Eyeshadow in Blushing Bride ($29.00)

Are you a liquid eyeliner legend? Or a bonafide braid expert? Share your tips with us!

3 Ways To Springify Your Look

July 26, 2012 in Fashion

We may still be in the midst of Winter, but judging by a lot of Tweets and Facebook posts, most of us are pining for the warmth and sunshine of Spring. So while we may not be able to change the weather, we can start buying a few pieces to brighten up our days and to also see us through to the fabulous Summer ahead.

Here are three ways to Springify your look!

1. Clare Vivier Neon Stripe Clutch from Shopbop ($139.50)

2. Lady Fox Accessories Emerald Cut Crystal Necklace ($95.00)

3. ModCloth ‘A-Head Of Trends’ Scarf ($19.99)

4. Nerine Anne Designs ‘Zara’ Earrings in Aqua ($22.00)

There’s nothing like a bright piece of jewellery, scarf or bag to liven up a Winter outfit. I love the fun and colourful print of the ModCloth scarf, which would look awesome with a denim jacket no matter what the season. And lately I’ve been distracted from the news on The Project thanks to Carrie Bickmore rocking some fabulously sparkly Lady Fox Accessories necklaces. If you haven’t already, be sure to check them out.

1. Forever New ‘Piper’ Skater Skirt ($59.99)

2. Ally Fashion Double Peplum Jacket ($34.99)

3. Ally Fashion Peplum Waist Skirt ($19.99)

4. Topshop Premium Sequin T-Shirt Dress ($117.00)

Some beautiful trends to add to your Winter wardrobe now that will see you all the way through Spring and Summer are florals, metallics, brights and peplum. When buying into a trend, only spend as much as you can afford. That way if the trend doesn’t continue next season or if you are just plain over it, you haven’t over-invested in that piece. Save your pennies for the classics but have fun mixing them with trends.

1. Novo Shoes ‘Clay’ Ballet Flats ($39.95)

2.  Verali ‘Lizzy’ Heels from StyleTread ($79.95)

3. Topshop ‘Melinda’ Ballet Flats ($54.00)

4. Steven ‘Amplifyd’ Heels from Shopbop ($152.10)

Metallic, neons and brights can also be rocked on your…feet! These amazing and affordable Novo ballet flats were brought to my attention thanks to Andrea at Fox In Flats. Loving the mix of neon and neutral together in one shoe. And of course I couldn’t go past these Topshop flats – not only because they are gorgeous, but also because they are named after my fabulous Shop Me Chic partner in crime!

How will you be bringing Spring into your wardrobe over the coming weeks?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

Carry-It-All: Stylish Baby Bags

April 3, 2012 in Children

Choosing the right baby bag is so important. It goes everywhere with you and holds all the essential items a mum could need.

I asked some very stylish mums what their advice was when it comes to choosing the perfect baby bag…

“I like big nappy bags and ones with heaps of pockets so I can ‘allocate’ things (socks, bibs, nappies) to different parts to make things easy to find. I want them to look pretty yet ‘manly’ enough that Mr doesn’t mind carrying it around too. Oh and nothing too gender specific. I want to be able to reuse the nappy bag down the track regardless of if we have another boy or a girl.” – Melinda (Mumma In Heels)

“It’s important to have quick access to things like keys and bottles, so slip pockets are very handy. It’s also great if a nappy bag comes with its own change mat, bottle warmer and a zip lock bag for any wet items like bibs. If a bag looks great too, then that’s a bonus!” – Amy (Absolute Amy)

“Why our Daddy Diaper Nappy Bag ticks all the boxes for us…insulated bottle holder; 3 large compartments (which can hold a variety of essentials such as rusks, food pouches, lip gloss, pens and teething toys), clips for stroller strap, large interior space to house everything you need for bubs when you are out and about (I seriously pack the kitchen sink in this bag). But the best aspect of this bag is this….There is a checklist for Dads which is screened on the magnetic flap, so no more worries about them leaving the nappies or wipes at home!- Katie (Mumma on the Run)

“Don’t assume size is everything – remember that you will probably end up carrying this bag around all the time. The bigger it is the more things you will try to put in there, the heavier it is. Think about your pram: what kind of handles does it have, how big is the storage basket? Remember that Dad is also going to have to carry this bag. You may think hot pink is in fact hot, Dad probably will not. While you are thinking about nappy bags also think about bottle holders and dummy covers. Some bags will come with them, other will not so you will have to purchase them separately. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in baby stores try luggage or leather shops. One of my favourite nappy bags was a leather bucket bag from a leather shop. I still use it all the time.” – Jaclyn (@ClassicJac)

“A practical bag that suits your style will become an all time favourite.” – Andrea  (Fox in Flats)

Now that we’ve covered what to look out for (and what to avoid), here are some fabulous nappy bags you can rock the playground with.

il Tutto Logo Tote – on sale $84.50

SkipHop Versa Nappy Bag from Urban Baby – $99.95

Timi & Leslie ‘Charlie’ Bag from My Brood – $220.00

OiOi Essential Bionic Dot Caviar Hobo – $89.00

Isoki Reversable Bowler Baby Bag – $199.95

Looking for more tips? The gorgeous Andrea from Fox in Flats wrote an article called ’10 ways to know you’re buying an awesome baby bag’…be sure to check it out.

These Boots Were Made For Winter

March 22, 2012 in Fashion

We’re already nearly at the end of March – can you believe it?

Even though the sun continues to make an appearance, I can’t help but notice how quickly the day seems to become darker and how much cooler the nights are. Soon enough winter will be upon us, which means we can rock my favourite cold weather footwear – BOOTS!!

There are 3 types of classic boots that are pretty well universally flattering and worth investing in, and 1 trend item that is pure sparkly fun.

The Ankle Boot

The ankle boot has made a major comeback in recent years and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. This type of boot comes in a variety of styles, but the one that has really captured my attention this season is the loose-fit, western style which can be worn with jeans, leggings or dresses. I fell in love with these Country Road boots when they were featured recently on the fabulous Styling You website.

Totti Ankle Boots (in Burnt Clay), Country Road, $229.00

The Knee High Suede Boot

I have an unhealthy obsession with suede shoes. I seem to collect them and for some reason they all seem to be black. I just think suede is so timeless and adds a gorgeous texture to any outfit. I have a pair of black suede boots I bought 2 years ago from Zu that I like to call my ‘Puss In Boots’ because the top of the boot can be folded down to sit just under my knee or it can be unfolded to sit a good few inches above my knee, a la Puss In Boots himself. Meow!!

Luxurious Suede Boot, Wittner, $269.95

The Flat Boot

The flat boot is essential for any casual winter outfit. It provides warmth and protection from the elements and also looks incredibly chic. My favourite way to wear them is with a sweater dress, longline cardigan and leggings. So comfy and cute. The most popular styles of flat boot are the riding boot or the motorcycle boot. And the best thing about them? The more worn in and beat up they look, the better!!

Idyllic Boot (coming soon), Siren Shoes, $209.95

The ‘Just For Fun’ Boot

Some of us participated in the Fox in Flats ‘Sparkle Dare’ last week, wearing something sparkly every day for 7 days.

For someone who loves all things glitter and sparkles, I was incredibly disappointed to discover I had a severe lack of sparkly clothing or shoes and had to make my accessories work overtime to complete the dare.

Glitter shoes, and in particular ankle boots, are a fun trend to try this season.

I wish I had a pair of these sitting in my wardrobe last week. Then again, who needs a dare to wear sparkly shoes?!

Dazzler Boot, RMK, $159.95

Bootee by Glamour Puss, Wanted Shoes, $129.95

 Strum Boot, Betts, $79.99

What is your favourite style of boot to kick around in?

Stay Chic,

Sonia
