7 Days of Statement Necklaces

May 31, 2012 in Fashion

A while back, we had a look at an imaginary week in my life with ’7 Sparkly Days of Cocktail Rings’. Today, we’re playing make believe once again. But this time with statement neklaces. The statement necklace is a fabulous way to add some sparkle and interest to a simple outfit, to distract the eye from areas we aren’t quite thrilled with, or to design an entire outfit around.

Monday

“I hate Mondays,” Puss In Boots uttered in the movie ‘Shrek 2′. Turning that hate into love is as easy as picking up a beautiful statement necklace and letting it inspire an outfit. Even if that outfit is as simple as a little black dress.

Ruby Olive ‘Midnight Short Petal Necklace’ ($45.00)

Tuesday

Besides a much needed coffee, the only other thing putting a twinkle in my eye is this gorgeous necklace. Who says you have to save sparkles for the weekend?!

Wild Bling ‘Acrylic Crystal Bow Necklace’ ($69.00)

Wednesday

Hump Day. One of those days that can go either way. The only way I’m going to guarantee a great day is to style myself up with a great necklace. Works a charm.

Miss Trudie ‘Braided Rope Necklace’ ($29.00)

Thursday

A spot of late-night shopping calls after work, which means it’s time to find some new outfits to match my necklace. Perfect shopping logic, don’t you think?!

Nerine Anne Designs ‘Marine Goddess’ Necklace ($38.00)

Friday

Friday nights are nearly always spent catching up with friends for dinner and/or drinks, so an outfit that transitions from day to night is essential. And so is the necklace that goes with it. Time to amp up the glamour.

Diva ‘Gold Enamel Glamour Necklace’ ($14.99)

 Saturday

A big Saturday night out calls for a big necklace. Looks like the wattage has been turned up to full shine with this number. Love it!

Forever New ‘Nietta Chainmail Stone Necklace’ ($59.99)

Sunday

A ladies brunch means a ladylike outfit with accessories to match. And what better choice than the metal of the moment, rose gold. So elegant.

 PeepToe ‘Goddess Isis Necklace’ ($119.00)

Do you collar a great outfit with a statement necklace?

A Chic Feature: Shabby Sisters

May 2, 2012 in Fashion

Shabby Sisters is the sparkly brainchild of sisters-in-law Kylie and Julia. Offering gorgeous yet affordable jewellery that can be ordered from the comfort of your own home, we chatted with Kylie to find out more…

What was the inspiration to start Shabby Sisters?

Quality jewellery that is unique and affordable.  Frustrated at how expensive beautiful pieces like pearls could be, we were convinced we could offer pieces that our customers would treasure without paying a fortune for them. With this in mind we set about creating a collection that was anything but shabby.

Where does the name Shabby Sisters come from?

It was the first name that popped into my head, combining my sister-in-law’s favourite design style, shabby chic, and our relationship.  We spent the next month trying to come up with something that had a little more sparkle and then settled on our original choice.  It was the perfect fit.

What do you love most about jewellery?

I love that jewellery can make a statement and transform an outfit from mundane to magnificent.  There is also history and emotion connected with each piece. Take an engagement ring or earrings that have been given to you as a gift, for an example. They hold such memories and become part of your story.  I have a beautiful pair of south sea pearl earrings I received when my son was born and every time I wear them I think back to that time and, one day, they will be his to give to someone.  That’s something that you don’t always have with fashion and it is why the Shabby Sisters Collections always feature timeless pieces that are just waiting to be part of your story.

What is your favourite piece from your collection?

This is such an unfair question, it’s like asking which of your children is your favourite. The one on the highest rotation in my wardrobe is without a doubt the pearl collar.  For such a statement piece of jewellery it is so very versatile and, without fail, I always receive compliments on it whenever I wear it.  It is also great to be wearing something so unique that you don’t see on everyone else.

How do you source your pieces?

Shabby Sisters pride ourselves on offering unique and timeless pieces.  We source our jewellery from boutique suppliers and designers rather than mass produced collections – so we are always individual and eternally elegant.

Where do they come from?

We are proudly an Australian company and where possible we try and source from Australian suppliers and designers.  We supplement our local products with pearls from China, which ensures high quality and diversity in style at a very reasonable price.  As we work closely with the pearl farms we have also had our own designs created.

What pieces of jewellery should every woman own?

Pearl StudsIf you only have one pair of pearl studs they should be a 7-8mm pearl stud which is the perfect size to be worn with or without a necklace. If you are lucky enough to have two pairs, add a 10-12mm pearl stud to your jewellery box. This larger size adds an updated twist to the classic pearl stud.

Pearl NecklaceLike a little black dress, every woman should have a pearl necklace because it is such a versatile classic. Ideally, choose one long enough to wear as a single strand or doubled over for a shorter style. Traditionally this length is called an opera necklace and is anywhere from 28 – 34 inches long.

Bangle/Cuff – There is so much going on around the wrist with rings and watches (not to mention the practicality of playing “Jingle Bells” every time you hit the keyboard or reach for the mouse). So, the best bangle or cuff you can have in your personal collection is a simple one.  Worn on its own for understated elegance or used as the foundation for your next arm party, a bangle / cuff is a must have.

Chandelier Earrings - Finding a perfect pair of chandelier earrings is like finding the perfect pair of black high heels that you can wear all night.  They need to be big enough to give you some bling, elegant enough to be make a statement whilst being comfortable and light enough to dance to the B52s Love Shack.  Our favourite chandelier earrings in the current Shabby Sisters Collection are the Vintage Sophia.

A Time Piece - Everyone should own a fabulous watch, either sleek and sexy or chunky and full of character, a watch is the perfect foundation to add bracelets, bangles or rings to.

Do you see jewellery trends each season? What sort of pieces should we be wearing this winter?

Jewellery has evolved beyond an after thought to a seasonal trend.  Like a fabulous bag or stunning pair of shoes, jewellery has become a central part of what we wear and how we wear it.  When I choose and outfit I start with my jewellery and plan everything else around it.

One piece you should add to your wardrobe this winter is a statement necklace. Long and layered to throw over those winter woolies or shorter Peter Pan-style collar necklaces are on trend for the cooler months. Lots of texture (think chains, leather and feathers) and colour at varying lengths are perfect.

Expect to see a big shift towards vintage-style pieces and pearls for Spring / Summer 2012, thanks to the magnificent Catherin Martin and her collaboration with Tiffany & Co on The Great Gatsby.

Colour Me Chic…Turquoise

April 19, 2012 in Beauty, Fashion

This is a brand new post in the Shop Me Chic collection!!

Colour Me Chic will take a different colour and pick the very best fashion, accessories and beauty products in that particular colour.

Today, we’re colouring your world turquoise!!

The gemstone turquoise represents the star sign Sagittarius. The phrase “The Turquoise” refers to the waters of the Caribbean. In holistic medicine, the colour turquoise purportedly has a calming effect on patients. And the colour turquoise plays an important role in the Shop Me Chic logo.

Who knew this gorgeous little colour had so many purposes?!  Now let’s put it to good use the best way we know how…

OPI Nail Lacquer ’Fly’ by Nicki Minaj from Salon Style ($16.96)

MAC ‘Aquadisiac’ Eye Shadow ($33.00)

Illamasqua ‘Strike’ Nail Varnish (approx $21.43)

Turquoise is such a striking colour that really pops on nails and eyes. And if you’re feeling particularly daring – Illamasqua also does a turquoise lipstick. Would you??

Shabby Sisters ‘Turq Drop’ Earrings ($50.00)

Wild Bling ‘Lucite Crystal Choker’ ($49.00)

Luxe by Lulu ‘Cara’ Bracelet from the Amalfi Collection ($13.20)

It’s so easy – and fun – to rock super bright turquoise jewellery. And it was for this very reason I chose more subdued pieces, with the exception of the amazing Wild Bling choker, which I would save for weekend fun. The more understated pieces can be worn to work…as well as on the weekend.

Agent Ninetynine Slouchy Beanie from General Pants ($19.95)

Billabong Beanie Band from SurfStitch ($19.99)

NewUrban Mia Felt Fedora Hat (approx $68.75)

A fun and unexpected way to incorporate turquoise into your outfit is with headwear. A beanie, a headband or a hat…pop it on your head for a pop of colour!!

Forver New ‘Maley Paper Bag Short’ ($59.99)

ASOS Mini Dress With Contrast Piping ($58.00)

Sportsgirl ‘Cocoon Coat’ ($169.95)

Turquoise is one of the beautiful jewel tones hitting stores this winter and here are three different ways to incorporate this colour into your wardrobe. Such a gem of a colour!!

Tony Bianco ‘Fryer’ Heel ($169.95)

Wittner ‘Lee Lee’ Ballet Flat ($99.95)

Zu ‘Empress’ Heel ($150.00)

I love a coloured shoe to add a point of interest to an outfit. These gorgeous heels would be the ultimate exclamation point at the end of a fashion sentence…!!

ASOS Paul’s Boutique Satchel ($115.99)

Forever New ‘Sigourney’ Clutch ($24.99)

Colette Accessories ‘Minnie Square Turnlock Crossbody’ ($29.95)

And finally grab the finishing touch to your outfit before you head out the door – a lovely turquoise bag to carry you through Winter.

There you have it ladies. Are you all turquoised out now? No? Good!! Make sure you get into one of the most beautiful colours of the season.

What colour do you want to see featured next in Colour Me Chic?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx
