Summer Bright Lipsticks

December 11, 2012 in Beauty

One of the easiest ways to brighten up your makeup look is with a beautiful lipstick colour. And when it comes to Summer, the brighter the better!

A fabulous makeup look, that is also incredibly simple, is to keep your face clean and fresh – think a hint of foundation, a neutral eye shadow, mascara and a subtle wash of colour on your cheeks and you’re done!

Well almost.

The finishing touch, the star atop the Christmas tree, the bow on the present is most definitely a bright lipstick.

So what colour do you choose?

This is when it comes down to personal preference. For example, I tend to stick with pinky coral tones as they seem to really suit me. I have friends who won’t venture far from a red lip and others who adore a shocking pink. The beauty of the bright lipstick is that you can work it your way.

Here are some brilliant lipsticks to brighten up your Summer…

1. L’Oreal Paris Infallible Le Rouge 10 Hour Lipstick in ‘Forever Fuschia’ from Priceline ($24.95) // 2. Revlon Luxurious Living Lipstick in ‘Orange Flip’ from Priceline ($25.95) // 3. Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick in ‘True Red’ from Priceline ($23.95) // 4. Australis Colour Inject Lipstick in ‘Flamenco’ ($12.95) // 5. Napoleon Perdis DéVine Goddess Lipstick in ‘Aphrodite’ ($24.00)

What is your favourite bright lipstick to rock?

Chicspiration: Taylor Swift

October 9, 2012 in Beauty

Taylor Swift is back with a new single, new album…and a new makeup look. The country cutie is all over the radio (and Melinda’s iPod!) with her latest single ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ and Taylor is all over the red lip, which could have something to do with her album name – RED!

So we’re taking some chicspiration from Taylor with a look that will “never, ever, ever”  (yes I went there!) go out of style…

Image

The Hair

Taylor has opted for a timeless and sophisticated bun, which is positioned at the nape of her neck. I’m loving the fact she is wearing her hair straight and has committed to it all the way by incorporating a lovely full fringe. Even if you don’t have a fringe (like me), a bun is always a stylish hair option.

1. Wash and blow-dry your hair as you normally would, the day before. Next day hair is much easier to work with for an up do.

2. Create a bun by brushing hair into a ponytail and securing with a hairtie.

3. Wrap the hair around the base of the ponytail and secure with bobby pins.

4. Grab some hairspray and lightly spray your hair, smoothing down any uncooperative strays, and you’re done!

The Makeup

Taylor has continued the classic look by wearing a winged eye and red lip. Both of these makeup elements take a lot of practice, but the payoff is well worth it. You may remember we recently shared some tips for the perfect red lip and picked 5 great red lip products too, so you can always revisit that post for a little help (I know I have)!

Eyes:

– Choose a neutral eyeshadow to brush over your eyelids.

– Using a liquid or gel eyeliner, hold the outer corner of your eye taut and glide the brush along the lashline. If you can manage, add a flick to give it a little oomph.

– Finish with 2 to 3 coats of mascara. I like to use both a lengthening mascara and a volumising mascara to achieve fantastically fluttery lashes.

Cheeks:

– Keep the cheeks quite subtle, so as not to compete with your eyes or lips.

– Use a blush colour close to your natural hue to give your cheeks a wash of colour (just a little wash, not the long cycle that takes like 2 hours…!).

Lips:

– Choose the most ravishing red lipstick you can handle.

– Ensure your lips are smooth and moisturised.

– Line lips with a matching pencil.

– Apply your lipstick. Blot. Apply it again.

– Try to refrain from eating, drinking, kissing or breathing prior to going out so you don’t have to reapply. But do make sure that you take your lipstick with you to revamp the colour between courses or drinks.

Here are some products to help you get started…

1. Napoleon Perdis DéVine Goddess Lipstick in ‘Aphrodite’ ($35.00) // 2. Australis Cosmetics Intensifeye Liquid Liner ($12.95) // 3. Napoleon Perdis Colour Disc Eyeshadow in ‘Ultra Suede’ ($29.00) // 4. Napoloeon Perdis Mosaic Flushing ($60.00) // 5. Australis Cosmetics Multi Mega Lash Mascara ($12.95)

Are you a Taylor Swift fan? Do you have any failsafe tips for a winged eye or a red lip?

Chicspiration: Lauren Conrad

August 9, 2012 in Beauty

As you probably know, Melinda and I consider Lauren Conrad to be one of our style icons. We absolutely love her look – whether it’s polished and ladylike, or laid back California beach girl. In fact, we featured Lauren in our second ever Celebrity Chic post.

Lauren is a self-made star. She made her TV debut as a high school student in the MTV reality series Laguna Beach, followed by her own spin-off series called The Hills. Lauren left the show on a high and went on to create The Beauty Department (a website otherwise known as girly heaven), write several fiction novels as well as style and beauty books, and design her own clothing lines which includes the gorgeous label, Paper Crown.

And that’s why today’s Chicspiration is Lauren Conrad!

Lauren Conrad: Braided Beauty

The Makeup

Lauren is the queen of liquid eyeliner. You could call it her signature look, as she tends to stick to one shade of eyeshadow and a slick of liquid eyeliner. She also usually has a subtle flush of colour on her cheeks and finishes with a beautiful lip colour.

To recreate this particular look, choose a lovely shimmery gold coloured eyeshadow and blend over the lid. Line the upper eyelid with a liquid eyeliner, ficking out slightly at the edge of each eye. Take your favourite mascara and give your lashes at least 2 coats for definition and pop. Swirl a pinky peach cream or powder blush on the apples of your cheeks. Finally, finish up with a nude pink lipstick or lipgloss and you are ready for your closeup!

For an easy step-by-step guide on using liquid eyeliner, check out this video tutorial by BellaSugar.

The Hair

To get the how-to for Lauren’s braided hairstyle, head on over to Fox In Flats where Melinda is guest posting.

In the meantime, here are some products to make you want to head for The Hills

1.  Benefit Posietint Lip & Cheek Stain ($28.00)

2. Benefit They’re Real! Mascara ($23.00)

3. Benefit Magic Ink Liquid Eyeliner ($20.00)

4. Napoleon Perdis DeVine Goddess Lipstick in Hess ($35.00)

5. Napoleon Perdis Color Disc Eyeshadow in Blushing Bride ($29.00)

Chicspiration: Cheryl Cole

July 24, 2012 in Beauty

Welcome to the latest instalment of our beauty series, Chicspiration. We’ve previously featured the fabulous hair and makeup looks of Beyonce and Kourtney Kardashian, so now it’s time to cast our eyes to the UK…no, not to the Olympics! Come on now, which website did you think you were visiting?! To a pop star that I’ve had a girl crush on for quite some time.

Today’s Chicspiration is…Cheryl Cole.

Cheryl started her music career as part of the band Girls Aloud and has since forged a successful solo career. Cheryl’s latest single ‘Call My Name’ is getting high rotation on my iPhone right now and if you want a fashion hit of neon, floral and clashing prints, then I suggest you check out the music video. One word – HOT! And so is this hair and makeup look…

Image

The Makeup

This is a makeup look I would definitely wear and one that I think would suit most people. It’s simple and beautiful, and would be perfect for a night out on the town.

Firstly, blend a rosy/coppery/mocha coloured eyeshadow over the lid, winging it out slightly and also underneath the lower lashline. Line the upper and lower waterline of the eye with a great waterproof pencil to really define the eyes. Then go nuts with your favourite mascara to get those lashes fluttering up a storm.

Finally, finish up with a bubblegum pink lipstick or lipgloss and you are ready to hit the dancefloor!

The Hair

Cheryl has the most amazing hair. It is long, thick, shiny and she always rocks it with heaps of volume, so it makes a nice change to see Cheryl with her hair up and off her face. In this look, she is working the ultimate ballerina bun - high, full and textured.

To achieve a ballerina bun like this, you’ll need a hair donut. If you don’t have one, you can get one here. All you have to do is pop your hair up into a high ponytail, slide it through the hair donut, wrap it around and pin.

For the ultimate tutorial on the perfect top knot, check out this post by Christina from Hair Romance.

Now, here are some products to get your pop career Cheryl-inspired look started…

1. Benefit ‘Bella Bamba’ Blush ($28.00)

2. Napoleon Perdis ‘Long Black’ Mascara ($35.00)

3. Benefit ‘BADgal’ Waterproof Eyeliner ($20.00)

4.  Napoleon Perdis DéVine Goddess Lipstick in ‘Nymphe’ ($35.00)

5. Benefit Velvet Eyeshadow in ‘Buckle Bunny’ ($18.00)

Are you a fan of this hair and makeup look? Who would you like to see featured in the next Chicspiration post?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

Chicspiration: Kourtney Kardashian

June 26, 2012 in Beauty

And so our Kardashian Week on Shop Me Chic continues! This is like a dream come true for me. I’ve been a Kardashian fan (or “doll” as the girls call us) since the very first episode of ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ way back when.

Now, let’s draw some chicspiration from one of the stunning sisters…

Kourtney is the silent achiever of the Kardashian family. Not only is she incredibly gorgeous, she has a quick wit, sarcastic sense of humour…and one heck of a fabulous sense of style. Kourtney tends to take risks when it comes to fashion and this extends to her makeup too. And that’s exactly why we adore her.

This is a beautiful and romantic look, and would be perfect for date night, lunch with the girls…or even your wedding day.

 Image

The Makeup

I love the simplicity of this look – it’s so clean and pretty. But when you look closer, there are some stunning elements working overtime to make Kourtney shine.

Firstly, the gold eyeliner. By lining the lower lashline with a metallic gold eyeliner, it makes Kourtney’s eyes pop and makes a refreshing change from the usual smoky eye.

Next up, those lashes! The Kardashian girls are either beyond genetically blessed with the world’s most amazing lashes, or they have an uber talented lash technician on speed dial. I’m going to go with the second option here. If you’re adopting their beauty philosophy, then bigger is definitely better. And layer up that mascara to amp up your flutter factor.

Finally, finish up with a beautiful rose or berry lipstick or lipgloss, depending on your preference.

The Hair

On this occasion, Kourtney is rocking a double braided up-do. If this is a little too Heidi-yiddle-lay-hee-hoo for you, then simply sweep your hair off your face into a loose ponytail with volume at the crown or pirouette your hair into a ballerina bun.

Whichever style you choose, make sure your hair is off your face to ensure your makeup has the chance to sparkle.

Here are 3 products to get your Kardashian on…

Face of Australia Mechanical Eye Pencil in Gold from Fashion Addict ($8.95)

 MAC ’2′ Lashes ($18.00)

Napoleon Perdis ‘Nude Rose’ Lip Gloss ($30.00)

Are you krazy for this look? (Sorry. Like I said, it’s Kardashian Week!)

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

3 Lip Colours To Brighten Your Day

March 5, 2012 in Beauty

For most of my life, I have been a Lipgloss Girl. Only just recently, with the resurgence in popularity of brightly coloured lipstick, have I been tempted to set foot into the mystic World of Lipsticks. Well that, and the lipstick I wore at my engagement party.

Now I’m hooked.

And so, I think there are three colours that are universally flattering and essential for every woman’s makeup case…

1. Coral

Those that know me well, know that I’m uh-bsessed with coral. Completely adore it. It’s just such a beautiful shade that suits most people and when it comes to lipstick, is the best way to ease into the brighter end of the colour spectrum.

MAC is the Maserati of the lipstick world. They go on like a dream, have the most intense colour pigment, brilliant staying power and are very moisturising.

A lipstick investment worth making.

MAC, Vegas Volt, $36

2. Pink

Fox in Flat’s Hot Pink Lips Dare this past week has ignited a love of bright pink lipstick for me. It really is a great way to brighten up your face. You can keep your eye makeup simple, your blush subtle and let your lips do all the talking – literally.

Napoleon also does amazing lipsticks. The colour and quality are fantastic and they are another essential brand to have in your lipstick wardrobe.

Napoleon Perdis DéVine Goddess Lipstick, Eros, $35

3. Red

Doesn’t red just scream bombshell to you? Yes? Well what a coincidence, because that’s the name of the lipstick I’ve chosen for the red category!!

A red lip can be incredibly intimidating, but also incredibly timeless. Every screen siren for as long as movies have been filmed has rocked a red lip, so why shouldn’t we? A red lip adds impact, drama, and is a look in itself.

So go on, try it. You’ll love it.

Sportsgirl, Bombshell, $9.95

Pucker up and tell me – what’s your favourite lip colour?

Stay chic,

Sonia
