Summer Bright Nail Polish

January 29, 2013 in Beauty

I don’t know about you, but I am pretty low key when it comes to beauty.

I get my hair blowdried once a week because I can’t be bothered don’t have a bathroom (thanks to renovating) and my daily makeup look consists of foundation, blush, lip gloss and mascara (which I try and remember to take off each night with a makeup remover wipe).

But there’s one thing that is super easy to do and makes a big difference to how I feel about my appearance – painting my nails.

You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? If you have a beautiful colour painted on your fingers or toes, you feel polished (pardon the pun). You feel finished. You feel chic.

And so while we enjoy the last half of the Summer, why not dip your fingers and toes into a pool of colour with these fabulous nail polishes…

1. Duri ’34 Pure Red’ from Down That Little Lane ($18.00) // 2. Australis ‘Jelly Bean’ ($7.95) // 3. OPI ‘Pink Flamenco’ from Adore Beauty ($19.95) // 4. Hello Darling ‘Superbass’ ($18.95) // 5. butter LONDON ‘Slapper’ from Down That Little Lane ($22.00) // 6. Hello Darling ‘Call Me Maybe’ ($18.95)

What are your favourite nail polish colours for Summer?

Stay Chic,

Shop Her Chic: Mez from Domestic Divinity

January 16, 2013 in Fashion

One of our favourite series returns for the first time in 2013 but this time, with a brand new name!

The concept of Get Her Chic will continue with a new blogger and their style featured each month but from now on the series will be known as Shop Her Chic.

To kick off Shop Her Chic for 2013, we have the beautiful (and glowing!) Mez from Domestic Divinty!

I have something to admit. I don’t follow trends, I don’t consider myself fashionable and I have never purchased Vogue magazine.  I know. Don’t hold it against me, please.

I have always been a slightly lazy person, often considering hanging up clothing after wearing it as too much effort and if it smells good from the pile in my bedroom, it will do.

I do try and dress for my body type though and being 32 weeks pregnant (at the time this article goes live) has thrown me some curve balls, literally.  I have always been small yet curvy with an hourglass figure. I knew how to dress for my body type and that was by either wearing tailored fitted dresses with a length that hit the knee or full skirted dresses with a nipped in waist.  I currently have tubs full of over 80 beautiful dresses which I hope to be wearing again soon after the baby is born.

I don’t really wear pants. They just never seem to fit me right, standing at 158cm has it’s downfalls in the clothing alteration department. Pants also do not hide sins in the same way that skirts or dresses do if you ask me.

As for maternity wear, I have tried to wear what I find to be comfortable and will be wearable after our daughter is born in early March 2013. I have seen a lot of beautiful maternity wear but cannot justify the cost of the majority of it, preferring to find a bargain from Target, Big W, Sportsgirl or Kookai instead.  The only down fall of buying clothes that are not Maternity is that the bigger the bump gets, the shorter the dress gets and for someone who doesn’t particularly love her knees, this is an issue.

I am trying to embrace necklaces more and more these days as I find they can liven up a dull outfit and are a great and inexpensive way to change the look of that dress that you have been wearing to death lately.

I confess that I do not have a great love for shoes and handbags like most other girls that I know, I am quite content to wear the same shoes to death (quite literally, I don’t buy a new pair until the current pair fall apart usually) and bang around the same bag.

The outfit in these photos was taken when we attended a casual Engagement Party but is pretty true to my every day style at the moment.

Dress: Sussan

Necklace: Catherine Stein purchased in New York City

Clutch: Sussan

Sandals: Witchery

Nail Polish: OPI I’m Indi-A Mood For Love

I do think that if you look in the mirror, give yourself a wolf whistle and strut out the door – you are not only feeling good but lookin’ good too and it doesn’t matter what you are wearing or how others perceive you and your style.

Someone once referred to my blog, Domestic Divinity, as a Fashion Blog and I nearly choked on the dumpling I was eating. Fashion Blog? Me? No way. I ‘run’ a Lifestyle blog which is basically me sharing tidbits of my very regular life which may include posts on Weddings, Outfits of The Day, Eating Out, Beauty Reviews and Babies. I don’t follow any plan on what to write and just write about what is relevant to me. Blogging has introduced me to some of my very good friends and it is incredible to have such a network on Twitter, Facebook, Blogger and Instagram.

Here’s our take on Mez’s gorgeous maternity style…

1. Hora Maxi Dress from Sportscraft ($41) // 2. Natasha Stone Necklace from Forever New ($24.99) // 3. OPI Indi-a Mood for Love from MBeautyLounge ($6.45) // 4. Kardashian Kollection Coco Woven Clutch from EverMe ($69.99) // 5. Tony Bianco Jiselle Flat in Nude ($89.95)

Do you love Mez’s pregnancy style as much as we do? What do you think of the newly renamed Shop Her Chic?

5 Nail Colours for Spring

August 24, 2012 in Beauty

It’s been a full week of Spring with blazers and dresses and today we are extending the colour love to our fingertips.

I’m getting so excited to dig out my favourite bright polishes and even more so to pair them with all the strappy sandals I plan on wearing!

Today we have five polishes for Spring and Summer…

1. China Glaze Man Hunt from Nail Etc ($4.99)

Man Hunt is the perfect bright blue creme especially is your polish cabinet is lacking in the blue department.

2. China Glaze Flirty Tankini from Nail Etc ($4.99)

With a name like Flirty Tankini, how can you not love this polish? It is part of the China Glaze Summer Neons Collection however isn’t as neon as the other polishes. Fun, flirty and definitely at the top of my Spring manicure list!

3. OPI Call Me Gwen-ever from Trans Design ($6.80)

Don’t be fooled by the bottle, this isn’t your typical orange, it’s full of dusty coral tones which I love! It’s one of the few polishes from OPI’s The Amazing Spiderman Collection that I found impressive.

4.Hello Darling Millions & Billions Rock Candy ($24.95)

This is a wish list item for me as I wait for it to get back in stock. Wednesday is one of my favourite pinks and I can’t wait to try the multi coloured rock candy!

5. Picture Polish Jade ($9.50)

This colour is simply stunning. A bright turquoise colour with the most subtle shimmer. A long time favourite and one I’ll be pulling out again to wear this Spring.

What colours are you looking forward to wearing in Spring and Summer?

Stay Chic,

Melinda & Sonia. xx

Colour Me Chic…Pink

August 10, 2012 in Fashion

We love a little colour in our lives – navy, yellow, coral, turquoise – and now, we are showing some love for pink!

If we didn’t already love pink enough, seeing Gwen Stefani’s Harper’s Bazaar cover earlier this week reminded us that we all look good in a little pink every now and then.

Here are our beauty, clothing, shoes and accessories picks to get you feeling pretty in pink!

1. Decision Blazer in Hot Pink from Esther Boutique ($89.00)

2. Crinkle In Time Scarf in Magenta from Modcloth ($15.99)

3. Dream Skinny Jeans in Pink from Nasty Gal ($47.60)

4. Jumper Knit Dress in Pink from i.d.s fashion ($35.00)

5. Skater Skirt from ASOS ($48.80)

1. Neon Nights Necklace in Pink from Nerine Anne Designs ($28.00)

2. More Bling for Your Buck Wallet in Pink from Modcloth ($16.99 on sale)

3. Marc by Marc Jacobs Wide Rubber Bracelet from Shopbop ($37.40)

4. Wildfox Pink Flower Ring from House of Zoi ($69.00)

5. Rose Clutch from Princess Polly ($55.00)

1. MAC Pro Longwear Lipcreme in ‘Love Forever!’ from MAC Cosmetics ($40.00)

2. OPI “Nothin’ Mousie ’bout It” from Trans Design ($6.80)

3. Bella Bamba from Benefit Cosmetics ($28.00)

4. ‘Wednesday’ Nail Polish from Darling ($18.95)

So now that we have exhausted every shade of pink  (50 shades of pink anyone?), tell us, how do you like to wear your pink? Are you a pastel pink, neon pink or classic barbie pink kind of girl?

Stay Chic,

Melinda. xx

Colour Me Chic…Turquoise

April 19, 2012 in Beauty, Fashion

This is a brand new post in the Shop Me Chic collection!!

Colour Me Chic will take a different colour and pick the very best fashion, accessories and beauty products in that particular colour.

Today, we’re colouring your world turquoise!!

The gemstone turquoise represents the star sign Sagittarius. The phrase “The Turquoise” refers to the waters of the Caribbean. In holistic medicine, the colour turquoise purportedly has a calming effect on patients. And the colour turquoise plays an important role in the Shop Me Chic logo.

Who knew this gorgeous little colour had so many purposes?!  Now let’s put it to good use the best way we know how…

OPI Nail Lacquer ’Fly’ by Nicki Minaj from Salon Style ($16.96)

MAC ‘Aquadisiac’ Eye Shadow ($33.00)

Illamasqua ‘Strike’ Nail Varnish (approx $21.43)

Turquoise is such a striking colour that really pops on nails and eyes. And if you’re feeling particularly daring – Illamasqua also does a turquoise lipstick. Would you??

Shabby Sisters ‘Turq Drop’ Earrings ($50.00)

Wild Bling ‘Lucite Crystal Choker’ ($49.00)

Luxe by Lulu ‘Cara’ Bracelet from the Amalfi Collection ($13.20)

It’s so easy – and fun – to rock super bright turquoise jewellery. And it was for this very reason I chose more subdued pieces, with the exception of the amazing Wild Bling choker, which I would save for weekend fun. The more understated pieces can be worn to work…as well as on the weekend.

Agent Ninetynine Slouchy Beanie from General Pants ($19.95)

Billabong Beanie Band from SurfStitch ($19.99)

NewUrban Mia Felt Fedora Hat (approx $68.75)

A fun and unexpected way to incorporate turquoise into your outfit is with headwear. A beanie, a headband or a hat…pop it on your head for a pop of colour!!

Forver New ‘Maley Paper Bag Short’ ($59.99)

ASOS Mini Dress With Contrast Piping ($58.00)

Sportsgirl ‘Cocoon Coat’ ($169.95)

Turquoise is one of the beautiful jewel tones hitting stores this winter and here are three different ways to incorporate this colour into your wardrobe. Such a gem of a colour!!

Tony Bianco ‘Fryer’ Heel ($169.95)

Wittner ‘Lee Lee’ Ballet Flat ($99.95)

Zu ‘Empress’ Heel ($150.00)

I love a coloured shoe to add a point of interest to an outfit. These gorgeous heels would be the ultimate exclamation point at the end of a fashion sentence…!!

ASOS Paul’s Boutique Satchel ($115.99)

Forever New ‘Sigourney’ Clutch ($24.99)

Colette Accessories ‘Minnie Square Turnlock Crossbody’ ($29.95)

And finally grab the finishing touch to your outfit before you head out the door – a lovely turquoise bag to carry you through Winter.

There you have it ladies. Are you all turquoised out now? No? Good!! Make sure you get into one of the most beautiful colours of the season.

What colour do you want to see featured next in Colour Me Chic?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

Happy Hands

March 20, 2012 in Beauty

I’ve had gel nails for years. Acrylics for years before that. I don’t think I’ve seen my natural nails for a good 10 years.

Recently, I made the decision to have my gels removed for a couple of reasons – to save money and to give my nails a bit of a break – and so I’ve had to learn the ropes of DIY manicures. I’ve quickly discovered some favourite OPI products that I use each and every time I do my nails.

Here’s my basic at-home manicure…

Step 1: OPI ChipSkip

OPI ChipSkip acts as a primer for your natural nail surface to increase the bond with your nail lacquer and to help prevent chipping.

Image

Step 2: OPI Nail Envy

As I’ve had gels and acrylics for so long, my natural nails are quite weak. OPI Nail Envy contains protein and calcium for harder, longer, stronger, natural nails.

Image

Step 3: Your Favourite Nail Colour

Now’s the time to have some fun. I’ve been experimenting with lots of different nail colours, including glitter nail polishes. A great way to try out numerous different colours without spending a lot of money is to purchase an OPI collection ‘mini’ pack. They contain 4 x 3.75ml bottles of lacquer and you will get quite a few wears out of each bottle despite its tiny size. It then allows you to work out which colours are your favourite and worth purchasing in full size.

One OPI mini collection I have my eye on is the ‘Dutch Treats’ from the Holland range.

OPI Dutch Treats, Salon Style, $22.45

Step 4: OPI RapiDry Top Coat

Once your lacquer is dry, apply the OPI RapiDry Top Coat for a tough, high-shine finish to protect your hard work.

Handy Hint

I discovered a fantastic little manicure tip on The Beauty Department website that I’ll be using myself this week…have a small flat paintbrush, a cap full of nail polish remover and a paper towel on hand to tidy up any mistakes. Dip the brush in the nail polish remover, clean up any stray nail polish, wipe the brush on the paper towel to remove the polish so you’re not spreading it around, and repeat the process until you have flawless fingers. Genius!!

My Tiny Treat

To help ease myself into the world of DIY manicures, I bought myself this OPI Tiny Treats pack which contains mini versions of the products I mentioned in Steps 1, 2 and 4 as well as nail wipes and nail polish remover all in a cute little travel case. A great investment.

OPI Tiny Treats, Salon Style, $19.76

What are your secrets to a successful at-home manicure?

Stay Chic,

Sonia

Nail It: Five Colours For Your Beauty Cupboard

February 27, 2012 in Beauty

Today we have five nail polish colours that every woman should have in her beauty cupboard. Kind of like wardrobe staples, but for your fingers. Polishes to suit work, play and everything in between. As a nail polish addict, this post was kind of hard to write (I don’t want anyone to ask me to cut down to just five colours!) but if you’re short on cash or storage (or you just don’t like nail polish that much) then here are the top five colours you need.

A Nude

Nudes are amazing because the possibilities are endless. Wear it solo for a clean and professional look, pair it with white tips for a classic look or if you’re feeling slightly bold (but not bold enough to rock a full bright mani) pair it with coloured tips!

My favourites are:

OPI Mimosas for Mr and Mrs – this has a slight pinkness to it.

Picture Polish Nude – this has been my favourite nude for a long time now.

Zoya Minka – this is from the Touch collection.

A White

I have been addicted to white polish for a long time. Wear it solo, on your tips or even as a base coat to get a different look on another polish.

My Favourites are:

OPI Alpine Snow – while a little streaky (three coats required), it is as white as white.

Darling Porcelain – a gorgeous glossy white by an Australian brand.

Nicole by OPI It’s All About The Glam – one from the Kardashion Kollection which has a tiny hint of shimmer.

A Red

I can’t go past a red lip or a red nail. Both are timeless and match everything. When in doubt? wear red!

Essie Really Red – a beautiful red creme.

SAX No.51 – my current favourite.

Face Of Australia Summer Spice - a beautifully bold polish with a slight orange tone to it.

An ‘Almost’ Black

So dark that it could be black meaning it goes with any outfit but you get that gorgeous hint of blue in the light.

My favourites are -

Essie Bobbing for Baubles – this has a slight grey tone too which I love.

Zoya Cynthia – a stunning, dark ‘inky’ blue.

Ski Teal We Drop – this has a slight green (or teal) tone to it, very pretty!

The Glitter

Depending on your day job, you might not get as much use out of a glitter as you do the other polishes but everyone needs a bit of sparkle in their life!

My Favourites -

Nicole By OPI Wear Something Spar-Kylie – it is pink and glittery, what more could you want?

Orly Androgynie – a black polish with gold, silver and multi coloured glitter.

China Glaze Ruby Pumps – the bottle picture does not do it justice but if I had to wear one polish for the rest of my life, it would be Ruby Pumps.

I have linked each polish to where they can be purchased from so that all the hard work is taken care of! Especially for Essie, China Glaze, Orly and OPI, I recommend NailEtc or Transdesign. Even with shipping, the nail polishes are much cheaper than buying in store and if you’re only after a bottle or two, why not combine orders (and share shipping costs) with a friend!

Happy Shopping!

Stay chic,

Melinda
