Travel in Style

February 21, 2013 in Lifestyle

If you’ve been hanging around here at Shop Me Chic for long enough, you would be well aware that I’m getting married next Friday (1 March).

And after that?

My fiancé (well, he’ll be my husband by then…!) and I will be jetting off on our honeymoon to Paris, Italy and Dubai.

All this talk of flights and baggage allowance has not only got me obsessed with what to pack, but also what to pack my life’s essentials in. One suitcase or two? Perhaps half fill each so the rest can be filled with shopping…?!

Anyhow, I digress.

Whether you are boarding a long haul flight to the other side of the world, like me or are simply packing up the car for a weekend getaway, here are some luggage essentials that will see you travelling in style no matter where you’re headed…

1. Kate Hill ‘Lucy’ Passport Sleeve ($19.99) // 2. Ooh La La 18” Quilted Suitcase ($159.00) // 3. Alife Design ‘Happy Flight’ Luggage Tag from Peter’s of Kensington ($10.00) // 4. American Tourister ‘Prismo’ Suitcase from Peter’s of Kensington ($133.00) // 5. Kate Hill ‘New Yorker’ Weekender (on sale $39.99)

What kind of packer are you? What are your packing tips for an overseas holiday?

Colour My Home: Black & White

February 1, 2013 in Lifestyle

Our Colour My Home posts are far and few between but they are one of my favourites to do. I could browse and shop research for homewares all day long!

So far we have covered mint, yellow and turquoise but today we are going back to basics with a classic combination: black & white.

Whether you pair your black and white together or opt for white on white, black on black or black and white with a pop of colour (turquoise for me please!), black and white can really give a room that classic but modern look all at the same time (just think Kris Jenner’s renovated mansion!)

I’m absolutely loving all of today’s picks especially the Paris clock from Modcloth and that chair from The Chic Element. I recently bought a $49 turquoise chair from Freedom for my new workspace but when I grow tired of that, the Eames Daw replica will be mine!

I picked up the ‘Sweet Home’ sign from Pillow Talk last week and I think it would add a nice touch to any home. Having white walls in our house, I’m going to attempt to get crafty and paint it black – sure to be a disaster but for $9.95, I’ll take the risk!

1.  Paris je Time Clock from Modcloth ($64.99) // 2. Sweet Home Wall Art from Pillow Talk ($9.95) // 3. Coffee City Nespresso Holder from Peter’s of Kensington ($18.00) // 4. Fancy Table Lamp from Domayne ($34.95) // 5. Collection of Cool Arrow Cushion from Down That Little Lane ($64.95) // 6. Replica Eames Daw Armchair from The Chic Element ($99.00)

How do you do black and white – white on white, black on black, white and black with a pop of colour?

Stay Chic,

Melinda xx

Kitchen Chic

December 16, 2012 in Uncategorized

I absolutely love this time of year. The atmosphere in the air is just amazing. The carols playing in the shopping centres, the decorations and everyone is so happy! But the best part? Celebrating the Holiday Season with family and friends. I love the season of giving. I love giving people gifts, seeing their faces when they open them. I love adding a little homemade something to my gifts. Usually some cookies, a small jar of jam or lemon curd.

I also love to entertain, however at this time of year things can get a bit hectic. Running around buying gifts, seeing all your family and friends, and attending numerous Christmas parties! So I’ve got some kitchen gadgets to make your life easier if you are entertaining or making some homemade goodies this Christmas.

1. Mastrad Mandolin – $28.95 Everton Online

Don’t you just hate standing in the kitchen and chopping veggies. It always seems to take forever. You can’t go past a mandolin to get the job done. This one from Mastrad has a convenient catcher so your chopped veggies don’t go all over the place. Don’t forget to use the hand guard!

2. Accura Venus Red Scales – $39.93 Kitchenware Direct

I think a chic set of scales makes the perfect accessory for the kitchen bench. I don’t know about you, but unless something like this is sitting on my bench, I probably wouldn’t use it. So it’s a lifesaver when it comes to baking!

3. CuisinArt Mini Food Processor – $84.00 Peters of Kensington

This mini food processor is amazing! You could use this for so many different things: grinding coffee beans, making a cheesecake biscuit base. You could also whip up a quick pesto! It is really a versatile little machine.

4. Russian Doll Measuring Cups – $15.95 Wow Giftware

How adorable are these measuring cups? Too cute to put in the kitchen drawer that’s for sure!

5. KitchenAid Mixer – $685.45 Your Home Depot

Ahh, the crème de la crème of small kitchen appliances! Hands up who is lusting over one of these? I have a cherry red KitchenAid in my kitchen, however if I could fit two of them – this turquoise one would be my next purchase! I honestly don’t know how I survived baking in the kitchen before I got my KitchenAid. They are definitely worth the investment.

Christmas Gifts for Toddlers

December 3, 2012 in Children

We have been busy little bees compiling all kinds of gift idea posts for you: Secret Santa gifts, baby’s first Christmas gifts, Gifts for Men and pampering gifts for your beauty loving loved ones.

I actually love gift shopping and spend hours of researching before I make my final decisions.

Today we continue our gift guides with gifts for toddlers. All of these gifts are suitable for little boys or girls between the ages 1 – 3.

I’m particularly loving the Hess Rainbow Stacker from Little Boo-Teek. It is smaller than I expected and folds into a ring shape making it easy to throw in my bag and take when traveling. Essential for the Christmas season!

1. One Fish, Two Fish by Dr Seuss from The Book Depository ($8.17)

A Dr Seuss classic that was one of my favourite as a child (and if I am honest, it’s still one of my favourites!)

2. Hess Rainbow Stacking Toy from Little Boo-Teek ($29.95)

Like I said, this is such a great little toy to travel with. Plus stacking things like this are great to teach toddlers counting skills and colours.

3. Kids Craft Turntable from Peter’s Of Kensington ($23.00)

This will be under our Christmas Tree this year as part of my plan to tidy up our craft box. It also comes in red and pink and so far, Peter’s of Kensington stock this at the best price.

4. Melissa and Doug Stacking Train from Amazon ($13.50)

I’m not sure if I have mentioned this before but I love Melissa and Doug. I can’t wait to see my toddlers face as he unwraps his stacking train on Christmas morning!

5. Mocka Cowboys Tee Pee from Lime Tree Kids ($99.95)

I’ve become a bit Tee Pee obsessed. They are just so cute! I have finally narrowed it down to this one (I think), however if you have a little girl you may like to check out the pink ones!

What will be under the Christmas tree for your toddler this year? Is it just me or are toddlers so much fun to buy for?

Beach Towels

November 29, 2012 in Lifestyle

Whether you’re lying by the pool, in the park, at the beach or in your own backyard, a good beach towel is another one of Summer’s essential accessories.

We recently featured 5 fantastic beach bags to tote around and now it’s time to choose the perfect beach towel to throw in!

So what makes a great beach towel? For me, I like a really big towel so that when I’m lying down at the beach, I’m not lying in sand. I also like a good quality beach towel that won’t leave little bits of fluff all over me. And of course, a gorgeous print to make it look chic!

No matter what your favourite colour (or print), there are a gazillion beach towels out there to choose from.

I’ve found 5 of the cutest beach towels to throw over your shoulder this Summer…

1. Adairs ‘Cable Beach’ Towel (on sale $48.95) // 2. Rip Curl ‘Betty Boo’ Towel from SurfStitch ($39.99) // 3. Missoni ‘Lara’ Towel from Peter’s of Kensington ($232.00) // 4. Country Road ‘Tilos’ Beach Towel ($59.95) // 5. Target 2 Piece Beach Towel & Bag Set ($23.80)

What does your perfect beach towel look like?

Christmas Decorations

November 27, 2012 in Lifestyle

Deck the halls with…decorations, fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la!

Even though Christmas decorations have been in stores for some time now, I am only just beginning to wrap my head around the fact that we are rapidly approaching the end of the year. Not very quick on the uptake, I know!

Another reason I’m not tiddly on the Christmas spirit might have something to do with the fact that we are in the middle of a massive renovation and extension on our home. There’s nothing appealing about decorating a building site!

At the risk of sounding like a “bah humbug” type, I’m putting all of my denials aside and picking out some of the cutest Christmas decorations around. And as you can see, I’ve chosen 2 colour schemes – metallic and colour – which just so happen to be 2 big trends for Spring/Summer 2012/13! You can take the girl out of fashion…!

1. Myer Reindeer Head Wall Mount ($19.99) // 2. Myer 100 piece Decorations Pack ($59.99) // 3. Target Reindeer Tealight Candle Holder ($29.00) // 4. Target Tabletop Christmas Tree (on sale $11.25) // 5. David Jones Wreath (on sale $44.96) // 6. Oxfam Hanging Star ($7.95) // 7. Swish Collection Christmas Tree Tealight Holder from Peter’s of Kensington ($33.00) // 8. Target Tree Topper ($10.00) // 9. Silver ‘Noel’ Mini Letters from Celebrating Christmas ($22.50)

How far do you go with decorating your home? Do you have a Christmas colour scheme?

Colour My Home: Turquoise

November 16, 2012 in Lifestyle

The Shop Me Chic team love a dose of turquoise.

The colour that started as part of our logo has become a huge part of the Shop Me Chic brand.

While we don’t work from an actual Shop Me Chic office yet (although working from the same state would be a nice step towards that!), I like to dream of a white on white office space complete with a turquoise feature wall and a decent pop of turquoises accessories throughout.

Our office days may be nothing more than a future dream but that doesn’t mean we (or you) can’t add a little turquoise into our homes in the meantime.

Here are a few picks to get you started…

1. Urban Outfitters ‘Stella’ Floor Lamp ($129.00) // 2. Ruby Pickles ‘Curious Owls’ Bookend from Down That Little Lane ($18.00) // 3. The Brown Trading Co ‘Diamond Turquoise’ Cushion (on sale $29.95) // 4. ‘Turquoise: A Chef’s Travels in Turkey’ from Peter’s of Kensington ($38.00) // 5. UneekGlassFusions Coral Bowl from Etsy ($57.14) // 6. Dualit Toaster from Peter’s of Kensington ($383.00)

Have you decorated your home with a touch of turquoise?

Secret Santa Gifts Under $20

November 15, 2012 in Lifestyle

For those of us that work in an office, this time of year sees that familiar email sent to all staff, and you will have one of two reactions: “yay!” or “delete!”. The email I’m referring to? Secret Santa!

As you can probably guess, I’m one of the “yay!” sayers. I love buying gifts for other people – yes, even my fellow co-workers! I like to try and find the right item that will guarantee a happy face when they unwrap their gift.

Sometimes we don’t know the person we have been given all that well, which can be a bit challenging. The gift buying process can also be made more difficult by the budget that is set – usually under $20.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun searching around to find your colleague a fantastic gift.

I’ve done some in depth research and have found some great options for you (and me!) to purchase for the people we spend so much of our days with…

 1. Little Miss Sunshine Mug from Peter’s of Kensington ($12.00) // 2. Forever New ‘Rita’ Retro Handset ($19.99) // 3. Keep Cup ‘AFL Series’ ($13.95–$17.95) // 4. kikki.K 2013 ‘Happy’ Weekly Diary ($16.95) // 5. Charging Charlie from The Gifted Man ($19.95) // 6. Skybar Wine Traveller from Dan Murphy’s ($19.99) // 7. Witchery Neon Cosmetic Bag ($16.95) // 8. Sportsgirl ‘Ferris Wheel’ Photo Frame ($19.95)

Are you participating in a workplace Secret Santa? What will you be buying your colleague?

Trick or Treat?

October 31, 2012 in Beauty, Fashion, Lifestyle

Let’s face it. Some of us just don’t celebrate Halloween – and I’m one of those people. You won’t catch me dressed up in a crazy costume, our house won’t be decorated with skulls, jack-o-laterns or cobwebs, and if kids come knocking at our door looking for lollies, I’ll mute the TV and pretend we’re not home. Yes. I know. I’m a terrible person.

So in the spirit of not celebrating Halloween, I thought I’d have a bit of fun with some picks that I consider to be Tricks and Treats…

Trick!

1. Typo Tramp Stamp ($2.95)

Have some fun with your co-workers and instead of date stamping their mail, use this ‘seriously WTF’ stamp instead! At home, you could even use it to stamp your electricity or water bill, cos we all know that’s what we’re thinking when we open those bills!

2. Theatrix Magic Hat from Peter’s of Kensington ($35.00)

I’ve always been a fan of magic. Especially the way I can never work out how they really do those damn tricks. So finally here’s my chance to play magician. Now all I have to do it try and stuff my cat into that top hat…

3. Raffaele Iannello ‘Voodoo’ Knife Block & Knife Set from Deals Direct ($99.95)

Now this knife block might be a little gruesome for some, but you get 5 knives with it – that’s a great deal! A quirky little addition to your kitchen benchtop that definitely be a conversation starter. Or ender. Just kidding.

Treat!

4.  Verali ‘Honey’ Heel in Neon Yellow ($69.95)

What woman would say not to treating themselves to a new pair of shoes? Certainly not me. I’m obsessed with bright colours for Summer and these neon yellow heels would fit quite nicely into my wardrobe. And with that pricetag, I wouldn’t even have to hide them from the husband-to-be!

5. Sussan ‘Dylan’ Pouch ($39.95)

Sussan always have such great accessories and this clutch is the perfect example. I love the beautiful turquoise colour and the size is perfect for all of my essentials for a night out – with no room for my fiance’s iPhone, keys or sunglasses (does anyone else get stuck trying to shove everything into an evening bag?!).

6. Hello Darling ‘Teenage Dream’ Nail Polish ($20.95)

The girls at Hello Darling always come up with the goods when it comes to on trend colours. This particular shade is from the ‘Crazy In Love’ range, with each colour named after a pop love song. So I guess this nail polish gives me permission to wear a purple wig and roll around in a pile of fairy floss? No? OK then.

Do you celebrate Halloween? Would you choose trick or treat?

Summer BBQ Essentials

October 16, 2012 in Lifestyle

One of my most favourite things about the summer months is entertaining friends at home. We love having friends come over for an afternoon BBQ that extends well into the evening, with lots of food, drinks, music and laughter.

My fiancé and I currently in the middle of a renovation and extension (while also planning our wedding for next March – yes we are THAT crazy) and while it’s hard work right now, what’s really driving me is having the house of our dreams. An entertainer’s house.

So what makes the perfect BBQ?

Besides the obvious – great friends and food – cute servingware and table decorations that take the occasion from casual to chic. Entertaining and intriguing conversation, often sparked by a simple little question. And of course, music that can go from dinner to dancefloor.

Here are my summer BBQ essentials…

1. MOZI Fruit Lantern from My Favourite (on sale $13.55) // 2. Chatterbox Collections from Down That Little Lane ($25.00) // 3. Logitech iPod Dock from Myer Online (on sale $85.00) / / 4. Jonathon Adler ‘Positano’ Tumbler from Peter’s of Kensington ($10.00) // 5. Freedom ‘Sardinia’ Party Tub ($34.95) // 6. Citta Design ‘Sangria’ Napkins from Peter’s of Kensington ($4.50) // 7. Jonathon Adler ‘Positano’ Melamine Serving Bowl from Peter’s of Kensington ($33.00)

I just adore the MOZI fruit lantern (1) , which also comes in a hot pink and pale blue. It would make such a sweet centrepiece for your outdoor table. Pear not your favourite fruit? No worries! You can choose the apple instead, which comes in white, red or green.

Don’t want to be stuck for conversation or want to have a bit of fun with your friends? Then the Chatterbox Collections (2) could be just the ticket. It contains 99 (plus 1 create your own) “entertaining & thought provoking individual cards each with a unique conversation creator”. As the team at Down That Little Lane explain, “Each conversation starter has been designed to inspire endless laughter, storytelling, and insight into those you thought you knew and maybe didn’t know at all…”

If you haven’t discovered Jonathon Adler homewares (4 & 7) then I suggest you scoot over to the Peter’s of Kensington website toot-sweet! The gorgeous colours are perfect for summer and their stylish appearance belies their affordable pricetag.

What are your summer BBQ essentials? What song is your summer anthem?

Sonia. xx
