Celebrate Me Chic

February 20, 2013 in Fashion, Lifestyle

Pop the champers, crank up the music and put your dancing shoes on…

Shop Me Chic is celebrating its first birthday!

That’s right. The idea that brought Melinda and Sonia together to start a simple blog to showcase stores and products that could all be bought online has now turned into an amazing community of readers and a space that we feel so lucky to have.

We wanted to celebrate our first birthday with our readers by giving away a little prize pack made up of items from online stores we love, BUT…as we have learnt over the past year, life is double the fun when you get to share it with a beautiful friend!

So the lucky winner will not only receive a prize pack for themselves, but a second one to share with their BFF!

Here’s what is included in each prize pack:

Ooh La La Accessories - Roxanne Leopard Shoulder Bag ($119.00) and Holly Leopard Top Handle Bag ($109.00)

Ooh La La accessories are feminine, fun and most of all, fabulous! With meticulous design detail, every Ooh La La piece will be loved for being fashionable, of course functional and great value, and for making a feminine statement.

Valentine’s Day Gifts: For Her

February 7, 2013 in Fashion, Lifestyle

This time next week, lovers everywhere will be celebrating each other. Whether it is a grand, extravagant celebration or a small, modest evening at home – how you celebrate Valentine’s Day is as individual as you are as a couple. And let’s face it, when you’re with the one you love, you’ll have a great time no matter what.

As for my fiancé and I, we tend not to make a big deal of Valentine’s Day. We do however always make sure we spend the evening at home together, cook dinner and just enjoy each other’s company.

Earlier in the week, Melinda featured 5 great gifts for the special guy in your life and today I have 7 fabulous items that are all under $60 and that any woman would be grateful to receive on the most romantic day of the year.

1. Glasshouse Fragrances Candle from David Jones ($39.95)

Ask any girl what brand of candle they like and chances are Glasshouse will be mentioned. With a gorgeous collection of fragrances representing destinations all over the world, you don’t have to travel anywhere to feel like you’re far, far away. Bora Bora anyone…?

2. Diane von Furstenberg ‘Lock Heart’ iPhone 5 Cover from Shopbop ($39.84)

Changing your phone cover is like giving it a mini makeover. Shopbop has a fantastic range of designer phone covers, such as this adorable DVF one, that are much more affordable than a designer handbag. Which means you can change your phone cover a lot more often!

3. Sterling Silver ‘Baby Heart’ Necklace from Down That Little Lane ($55.00)

This simple yet stunning necklace would make a fabulous addition to your jewellery collection and is a piece that could be worn every day. A lovely way to carry your significant other’s heart with you.

4. Witchery ‘Abstract’ Scarf ($49.95)

Let’s face it, scarves are a wonderful distraction. They distract from a tired face, a bloated belly or even a stain from a certain little someone’s Vegemite toast. Witchery has a fabulous range of scarves and I absolutely adore the colours in this little number. A very versatile accessory!

5. Shabby Sisters ‘Turquoise Crowns’ Earrings ($48.00)

You can always count on Shabby Sisters for a classic and beautiful piece of jewellery. These gorgeous sterling silver and turquoise earrings are special enough to be worn on a night out yet simple enough to be worn with jeans and a white t-shirt.

6. Peter Alexander ‘Anchors’ Nightie ($59.90)

Peter Alexander sleepwear is like candy without the calories. Always sweet, always colourful, always a treat to receive. This little number is nautical and nice, perfect for when it’s time to retire to the captain’s quarters with your first mate. Ahoy there!

7. ModCloth ‘Letter Together’ Mug Set ($29.99)

As soon as I saw the name of these adorable mugs, I started humming the Jack Johnson song, Better Together. Obviously a play on that song title, this is a sweet gift that could be shared over a morning coffee with the one you love. “We’re better together…”

How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? How do you leave hints for the gift you’d like to receive?

Stay Chic,

Sonia xx

Sonia’s Etsy Wedding Purchases

January 22, 2013 in Fashion, Lifestyle

My wedding day is rapidly approaching (Friday 1 March, which is less than 6 weeks away now)!

This equally excites and terrifies me.

It excites me because I can’t wait for the day itself – to marry the love of my life and celebrate with our friends and family. And it terrifies me because I am pretty certain I’ve thought of and organised everything – but what if I haven’t?!

Casting my fears aside, I have to say I’ve been pretty relaxed about this whole wedding planning caper. I am the Queen of the To Do List, I’ve kept a budget spreadsheet any accountant would be proud of and I’ve put my Shop Me Chic online shopping research skills to excellent use – in particular on Etsy.

Ahh, Etsy.

“Etsy is a DANGEROUS DEN FOR BRIDES. Beware,” to quote the newly married Mrs Zoe Blake (née Foster).

It sure is. You can lose hours browsing page after page of every conceivable wedding item you could ever imagine – and even more hours on items you could never image existed or thought that you needed, but now simply MUST have.

I’ve bought quite a bit online and what I love about the sellers on Etsy is that they are passionate about what they do. They want to make you, their customer, happy. Also, you can personalise pretty much any item to add that special touch. It’s a wedding wonderland!

Here are 6 items I’ve bought for my wedding from the magical place that is Etsy…

1.  ‘Team Bride’ Tank Top from Dentz Designs (approx. $29.34)

As a gift for my girls, I have bought them these stunning Shabby Sisters earrings, as well as a silver beaded clutch from Sussan and a pair of Starlettos each so they don’t sink into the grass during the ceremony. But I also wanted to buy them a fun item. Something you can only get when you are part of a wedding. So while browsing Etsy, I found these ‘Team Bride’ tanks and I knew I had to get them.

2. 20 Piece Photobooth Prop Set from Party Goodies (approx. $24.45)

I purchased a mini Polaroid camera from eBay and knew I had to get some fun props for our guests to get a bit silly with. Party Goodies have a huge selection of prop sets to choose from all at affordable prices.

3. ‘Bride’ Tank from Dentz Designs (approx. $38.14)

Well I couldn’t miss out on a fun wedding tank top, now could I?!

4. ‘I Do’ Cotton and Metal Ring Bag from Olive and Fern (approx. $21.82)

I knew that I didn’t want a ring cushion, but rather a ring bag that one of our groomsmen could slip into his pocket to keep our rings safe and sound. This particular ring bag jumped out at me immediately due to its simple, yet beautiful design and that it can be personalised with your wedding date.

5. Personalised Groom’s Cufflinks from Hotaru Jewelry (approx. $34.22)

I bought these personalised cufflinks for my very handsome groom as part of his Christmas gift. I also gave him a fragrance to wear on the wedding day (Gucci by Gucci – his signature scent). He absolutely loves these cufflinks, and will continue to wear them long past our special day.

6. Custom Wood Wedding Guest Book from Lorgie & Me ($70.00)

I was on the hunt for a personalised guest book and fell in love with the idea of a wooden cover. Enter Lorgie & Me and their array of gorgeous personalised guest books. It arrived lovingly wrapped in a dustcover and I can’t wait for it to be filled with messages and Polaroid photos from our guests.

Have you used Etsy for your wedding purchases? What have you bought? Are there any other websites you would recommend?

Stay Chic,

Sonia

Summer Accessories Under $20

January 10, 2013 in Fashion

You might remember a little while ago Melinda found some fabulous accessories that were all under $20. You all went mad for that post, so we’ve decided to bring it back again – this time with some sassy Summer picks.

Now that all the Christmas presents have been unwrapped and the decorations have been put away (and the credit card statement has appeared in the letterbox), we’re once again looking at cheap and cheerful ways to update your look without breaking the bank.

And of course the easiest way to do that is with accessories!

The fabulous thing about Summer accessories is that colour is everywhere, which means you can keep your outfit super simple (think white tank with tailored shorts or a neutral dress) and let your accessories take centre stage. Also, when the weather starts turning the corner into Autumn Avenue, you can hang onto that piece of Summer with your accessories!

I’ve had a little search of the internet to find the most colourful and affordable accessories you can own right now, with just one little click…

1. Colette by Colette Hayman ‘Glamour Evening’ Earrings ($12.95) // 2. Forever New ‘Aleda’ Enamel Bangle Set ($19.99) // 3. Sportsgirl ‘Origami’ Plate Necklace (on sale $9.95) // 4. Target Drop Earrings in Orange ($7.50) // 5. Shabby Sisters ‘Navajo Nights’ Bracelet ($15.00) // 6. Colette by Colette Hayman Square Enamel Ring ($5.95) // 7. Diva ‘Colour Pop’ Enamel Collar Necklace ($19.99) // 8. Target Pink Filigree Earrings ($7.50) // 9. Lovisa Black Neon Claw-Set Ring (on sale $5.00) // 10. Lovisa Faceted Pink Chain Link Necklace ($16.99)

Have you scored any bargains this Summer? Tell us about them!

Get Her Chic: Justine from The Suburban Stiletto

December 7, 2012 in Fashion

As the first Wednesday of each month rolls around, we get so excited to present a new ‘Get Her Chic’ blogger, where you can take a peek into the style (and wardrobe) of bloggers we know and love.
Today’s blogger is quite special as she actually approached us to participate in the series! Here she is, Justine from The Suburban Stiletto…

I love dresses. And stilettos. I’m a little obsessed to tell you the truth. I never considered myself to be an addict of any kind, but as I am getting older, I think I do have a little bit of shopper addict in me! In particular, browsing the sale rails. I get a ridiculous feeling of elation when purchasing a sexy pair of heels or a pretty dress for a fraction of it’s original cost! I pride myself on only paying full price if I have to (ie I’m not prepared to gamble and wait to see if it’s discounted). And I admit I becoming totally obsessed if I see a pair of shoes that I have fallen in love with, dreaming of them, heart skipping a beat, until I finally get them.

I started my blog  The Suburban Stiletto and Facebook page  after a friend suggested it.  I was bored one rainy day, so just played around on blogger and suddenly my blog was live and it has become an extension of my daily diary, just not as personal, more focused on clothes and shoes and other ramblings, as if I’m talking to myself. An escape from mummy stuff.

I have always loved fashion. I studied fashion design at college after school and would regularly take trips to London to stock up on all the latest styles and emerging designer clothes. I was a little alternative as a teenager – a Wendy James (from Transvision Vamp) wannabe, so I would wear clothes by Pam Hogg, John Richmond, Katherine Hammnet, Helen Storey, H&M, and cool jumble sale or op shop finds. As I got older I kind of lost myself for a while (long story) a series older men, emigrating, then motherhood, clouded my real self for a number of years, but thankfully I am ‘me’ again!

Being a typical English pear shape, I dress to suit my body.  My ‘signature look’ would have to be belted dresses, preferably in the fit and flare style.  I favour classic, slightly retro, feminine dresses that nip in the waist and end on or just above the knee. My favourite brands are Cue, Review, Alannah HIll, Basque and Portmans.  I hardly ever wear trousers and only wear jeans in winter.

High heels are my weakness, or wedges, to enlongate my legs. Again I prefer classic styles and colours, I don’t really like lots of straps or fussy bits. For example, I couldn’t live without my patent nude Tony Biancos – they go with everything! A straight, thin stiletto, pointed toe or peeptoe cannot be beaten. If I can’t wear heels, I wear thongs.  I don’t do flats. My favourite shoe brands are Tony Bianco, Diavolina, Peeptoe, Guess and of course I dream of owing a closet full of Louboutins!

When I am not blogging, ferrying kids about or having coffee with girlfriends, I working, part time, as a Media Manager for a local ad agency. I am lucky enough to work around the kids (I have two, one of each, 9 and 11). Sometimes I consider getting a ‘proper job’ full time, but we’ll see… For now, the balance is right.

The outfit I have chosen is a really versatile dress from Cooper Street (on the Myer sale rail for $55!), that I wear to work, or out to lunch, or pretty much anywhere.  With its puffy sleeves, tie belt and floral print, it doesn’t need much in the way of accessories, just my little diamond necklace and silver bead and pearl bracelets – and a good pair of heels to set it off (of course)!  I can never decide between the pink suede peep toes (reduced to $30!) or the gorgeous gold metal heeled ‘Alamo’ sandals ($179.95), both Tony Bianco.  I like bags that don’t necessarily match, like my red leather Birkin (a generous gift!), that goes with everything.

I think it is important to feel happy and confident in what you wear.  I am at my best in heels!

Here’s our take on Justine’s feminine and flirty outfit:
Can you relate to Justine and her love for high heels?

Chic Up Your Kids Room: Christmas

November 22, 2012 in Children

Christmas fever has officially arrived at Shop Me Chic!

If you follow us on Pinterest, you will have seen our growing Christmas Chic board full of Christmas recipes, wrapping ideas and decorations.

Today, we are adding a bit of Christmas cheer to your very own little elf’s room!

Since becoming a mum, my excitement for Christmas has grown.

We do it all – getting the photo with Santa, decorate the tree, blast Christmas carols (the Michael Buble and She & Him kind!) and of course on Christmas Eve, we leave out carrots for the reindeer and a Corona for Santa!

This year, we won’t be home for Christmas Day but I am still looking forward to spreading some green and red decor throughout the boys room so that they can enjoy the Christmas season for as long as possible!

1. Holiday House Rules from Etsy ($17.78)

I’m excited to welcome these rules into our house this year. I love that they reinforce the most important things about the Christmas spirit – like the best gift of all, is love.

2. Noel Christmas Bunting from Shabby Sisters ($18.00)

Every house needs a little bit of holiday inspired bunting! Even if you are a little more Grinch than Mrs Claus, this is still festive without a lot of fuss.

3. The Elf On The Shelf ($29.95)

This will be our first Christmas with an Elf in our family and despite my fiance making fun of my excitement, I am looking forward to starting a new tradition with the boys (in particular, reminding my head strong three year old that Santa’s elf is always watching!). If you’re not familiar with Elf On The Shelf, you can check it out here.

4. Christmas Reindeer Pillow from Etsy ($20.74)

Apart from it’s darling appearance, this pillow is the perfect way to teach your little Christmas enthusiast the names of all of reindeers!

5.  Personalised Santa Sack from Stuck On You ($49.95)

A Santa Sack makes the perfect Christmas decoration throughout December and a beautiful place for Santa to place presents to be opened on Christmas morning. At the moment, I’m torn between ordering these ones for the boys (did you notice I snuck in one for Addison…?!) or these My Munchkin ones from Lime Tree Kids.

What are your Christmas traditions? Do you decorate your house from top to toe for the holidays?

Stay Chic,

Melinda xx

A Chic Feature: Shabby Sisters

September 24, 2012 in Fashion

Putting together this feature was a little bit of a déjà vu moment for us, as we featured this sparkly brand not long after Shop Me Chic was born! Shop Me Chic has certainly come a long way since then and so have Shabby Sisters, stocking plenty of beautiful new pieces. We had a chat to Kylie about Shabby Sisters, their upcoming arrivals and the jewellery piece we should all own this Summer!

Tell us a bit about Shabby Sisters.

Shabby Sisters was created through our frustration at a lack of affordable jewellery.

While disposable jewellery was plentiful, quality jewellery was really limited. Our belief was, and still is, that quality jewellery should be ‘affordable’ not ‘unattainable’ to everyone. With this is mind, we set about creating our first Shabby Sisters’ Collection of unique and beautiful pieces at affordable prices. Four years down the track we have become so much more. While we continue to provide affordable quality collections, we have incorporated our own unique style of statement pieces that can be worn on their own or layered with other jewellery pieces.

We also want our collection to evolve from a pair of earrings or a necklace, to a sentimental piece that becomes part of our customers story and creates emotion and holds their memories.

What pieces of jewellery do you consider to be timeless and classic?

Pearls, pearls and pearls.  Did we mention pearls?! There are very few outfits that pearl jewellery can’t be used to accessorise. Unfortunately people still shy away from pearl jewellery because of the age-old belief that they are ‘too good to be worn everyday’ or that they remind them of their Nana.

Pearls really are the stable piece of every jewellery box.  If there were just one piece of jewellery that we all should own, it would be a pair of pearl studs. They are elegant and versatile, they don’t need to match with your other ‘gold or silver’ jewellery, they come in all shapes, sizes and colours and most importantly they are very affordable.

What is also really unique about pearls is that unlike other gemstone, they are created from a living creature.  This adds such an individual element to every pearl.  Like us, no two pearls are the same.

Describe the Shabby Sisters woman.

When she gets dressed, she starts with her accessories and everything else falls into place. She is elegant, yet modern and led by her own style not a fashion trend. She is creative and unique.  She is feminine but strong.   She is anything but shabby.

What can we expect to see on the Shabby Sisters website in the coming months?

Lots of colour and texture. There will be a huge infusion of colour in our Spring/Summer Collection in the coming months.  We will also be incorporating a range of textures that we have not had before in our collections.

While the luxurious turquoise and peach palette will be a strong element, don’t put those pearls away just yet because towards the end of Spring/Summer we will also see a revival of pearls and vintage styled pieces.

What piece of jewellery should we all own for Spring/Summer?

A statement necklace!  It can take you from the playground to the boardroom with a simple change of outfit!

Our favourite look at the moment is dressing up a basic t-shirt, jeans and a pair of wedges with a statement necklace.  It is understated glamour!

When choosing a statement necklace, look for one with a range of texture and or colour to make it stand out.  The key to wearing a statement necklace is to wear it with confidence and own it!

1. Moroccan Nights Bracelet Stacker Set in Yellow ($15.00)

2. Marine Goddess Necklace ($45.00)

Tweet and ‘like’ Shabby Sisters on Facebook and Twitter and view their entire range on the Shabby Sisters website!

Do you have any statement necklaces in your accessory draw? Could you see yourself wearing one of our Shabby Sisters picks?

Stay Chic,

Melinda & Sonia. xx

The Friday Five

August 31, 2012 in Beauty, Fashion, Lifestyle

It’s the last day of August! Tomorrow is the 1st of September, which means it is exactly 6 months until my wedding day. I don’t know if that excites or terrifies me…or both! Time just seems to be going by so quickly and with so much happening in my life, the day will be here before I know it.

This past month has seen me buying birthday gifts for some of my lovely friends, booking and organising more things for the wedding and starting think of my own birthday (12 September in case you wanted to know…!).

On the last Friday of every month, Melinda and I take turns to round up our five favourite products for the month.

Here is my Friday Five for August:

1. Lorna Jane ‘Believe In Magic’ Tank ($34.99)

I bought this cute singlet as part of a birthday gift for one of my friends. Lorna Jane is my workout wear of choice, as it is excellent quality and fashionable to boot, and the message on this singlet won my heart. Inspirational and chic.

2. Organix Brazilian Keratin Therapy Ever Straight Shampoo and Conditioner from Chemist Warehouse ($17.69 each) *

Some of you may know that I am in the midst of a renovation and extension, which means I am living without a kitchen, laundry and bathroom. I now value a hot shower like never before and when washing my hair, it is a total treat to use these fab Organix products. They leave my hair looking and feeling nourished…not to mention they smell amazing!

3. Esther Boutique ‘Snowball’ Dress (sold out)

I pre-ordered this gorgeous dress a while ago, and I’m expecting it to be delivered any day now. I’m having my wedding hair and makeup trial before going out with my friends for my birthday, and this dress is the perfect choice to party the night away. Don’t worry that this one is sold out – there are plenty more fabulous dresses to choose from.

4. Kikki.K ‘My Wedding Organiser’ (on sale $31.96)

This little folder has been getting a workout recently – it’s quickly filling up with emails, bookings and brochures! It makes this Virgo very happy, as it has 8 sections to keep you organised…and looks pretty too!

5. Shabby Sisters ‘Vintage Amelia Long’ Earrings ($65.00)

I am a huge Shabby Sisters fan. They have such beautiful jewellery that’s fantastic quality, extremely affordable and their customer service is second to none. I’ve had my eye on these beauties and after a conversation with Kylie from Shabby Sisters, she convinced me that they were the perfect wedding earrings for me – and she was right! I have also purchased the short version for my 4 bridesmaids so we can all sparkle on my Big Day.

What products have you been loving this month? Are you celebrating a birthday in September? Tell us!

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

A Chic Feature: Shabby Sisters

May 2, 2012 in Fashion

Shabby Sisters is the sparkly brainchild of sisters-in-law Kylie and Julia. Offering gorgeous yet affordable jewellery that can be ordered from the comfort of your own home, we chatted with Kylie to find out more…

What was the inspiration to start Shabby Sisters?

Quality jewellery that is unique and affordable.  Frustrated at how expensive beautiful pieces like pearls could be, we were convinced we could offer pieces that our customers would treasure without paying a fortune for them. With this in mind we set about creating a collection that was anything but shabby.

Where does the name Shabby Sisters come from?

It was the first name that popped into my head, combining my sister-in-law’s favourite design style, shabby chic, and our relationship.  We spent the next month trying to come up with something that had a little more sparkle and then settled on our original choice.  It was the perfect fit.

What do you love most about jewellery?

I love that jewellery can make a statement and transform an outfit from mundane to magnificent.  There is also history and emotion connected with each piece. Take an engagement ring or earrings that have been given to you as a gift, for an example. They hold such memories and become part of your story.  I have a beautiful pair of south sea pearl earrings I received when my son was born and every time I wear them I think back to that time and, one day, they will be his to give to someone.  That’s something that you don’t always have with fashion and it is why the Shabby Sisters Collections always feature timeless pieces that are just waiting to be part of your story.

What is your favourite piece from your collection?

This is such an unfair question, it’s like asking which of your children is your favourite. The one on the highest rotation in my wardrobe is without a doubt the pearl collar.  For such a statement piece of jewellery it is so very versatile and, without fail, I always receive compliments on it whenever I wear it.  It is also great to be wearing something so unique that you don’t see on everyone else.

How do you source your pieces?

Shabby Sisters pride ourselves on offering unique and timeless pieces.  We source our jewellery from boutique suppliers and designers rather than mass produced collections – so we are always individual and eternally elegant.

Where do they come from?

We are proudly an Australian company and where possible we try and source from Australian suppliers and designers.  We supplement our local products with pearls from China, which ensures high quality and diversity in style at a very reasonable price.  As we work closely with the pearl farms we have also had our own designs created.

What pieces of jewellery should every woman own?

Pearl StudsIf you only have one pair of pearl studs they should be a 7-8mm pearl stud which is the perfect size to be worn with or without a necklace. If you are lucky enough to have two pairs, add a 10-12mm pearl stud to your jewellery box. This larger size adds an updated twist to the classic pearl stud.

Pearl NecklaceLike a little black dress, every woman should have a pearl necklace because it is such a versatile classic. Ideally, choose one long enough to wear as a single strand or doubled over for a shorter style. Traditionally this length is called an opera necklace and is anywhere from 28 – 34 inches long.

Bangle/Cuff – There is so much going on around the wrist with rings and watches (not to mention the practicality of playing “Jingle Bells” every time you hit the keyboard or reach for the mouse). So, the best bangle or cuff you can have in your personal collection is a simple one.  Worn on its own for understated elegance or used as the foundation for your next arm party, a bangle / cuff is a must have.

Chandelier Earrings - Finding a perfect pair of chandelier earrings is like finding the perfect pair of black high heels that you can wear all night.  They need to be big enough to give you some bling, elegant enough to be make a statement whilst being comfortable and light enough to dance to the B52s Love Shack.  Our favourite chandelier earrings in the current Shabby Sisters Collection are the Vintage Sophia.

A Time Piece - Everyone should own a fabulous watch, either sleek and sexy or chunky and full of character, a watch is the perfect foundation to add bracelets, bangles or rings to.

Do you see jewellery trends each season? What sort of pieces should we be wearing this winter?

Jewellery has evolved beyond an after thought to a seasonal trend.  Like a fabulous bag or stunning pair of shoes, jewellery has become a central part of what we wear and how we wear it.  When I choose and outfit I start with my jewellery and plan everything else around it.

One piece you should add to your wardrobe this winter is a statement necklace. Long and layered to throw over those winter woolies or shorter Peter Pan-style collar necklaces are on trend for the cooler months. Lots of texture (think chains, leather and feathers) and colour at varying lengths are perfect.

Expect to see a big shift towards vintage-style pieces and pearls for Spring / Summer 2012, thanks to the magnificent Catherin Martin and her collaboration with Tiffany & Co on The Great Gatsby.

Visit http://shabbysisters.com.au/ to see the full collection. In the meantime, here are our favourite picks…
