Winter Forecast: Grunge Cowboy

April 11, 2013 in Fashion

My final intel.

Before I describe the grunge cowboy look, let me clarify that the US is in fact ahead of us in fashion.

You see, in my opinion, I think we are far more fashionable than the US.  I think it is the way we pull off the looks.

No offence to Americans, but they seem very staged in their outfits (obviously, there are always a few exceptions).

And Europeans (again, no offence) seem very uptight in their fashion.  Whereas I find us Aussies tend to wear trends better, with a relaxed “Oh I just grabbed this as I ran out the door” feel.  We have no problems mixing pieces that really shouldn’t go together, but actually look amazing!

So I always find it strange that we follow the US in fashion than visa versa.  But I have a friend in the fashion industry who knows everything and anything about fashion, and she confirms that we are last off the ranks (but we do a fine job of it).

So the grunge cowboy look.  Don’t think Aussie cowboy, more American out-West cowboy.  But trendy.  With some darkness.  It’s about pairing your much loved jeans with some more denim, some tan accessories, a faux-leather vest or jacket and a dark printed tee.

If you can’t handle it at 100%, turn down the volume with a statement piece.

1. Rhinestone Tank Grey Marle $69.95 // 2. Longline Destroyed Denim Shirt US$49.80 // 3. Spiked Faux Leather Moto Vest US$32.80 // 4. Zatchels Leather Barrel Bag $80.00 // 5. Bullet Studded leather ankle boot with double strap detail $180.00 // 6. Riders by Lee Bumster Bootcut $99.95 // 7. Stylestalker Ray Gun Sweater $129.00

Gotta have it or make it stop (a la Fashion Police)?  What are you stealing from this trend?

Stay chic,

Avi

Summer Accessories Under $20

January 10, 2013 in Fashion

You might remember a little while ago Melinda found some fabulous accessories that were all under $20. You all went mad for that post, so we’ve decided to bring it back again – this time with some sassy Summer picks.

Now that all the Christmas presents have been unwrapped and the decorations have been put away (and the credit card statement has appeared in the letterbox), we’re once again looking at cheap and cheerful ways to update your look without breaking the bank.

And of course the easiest way to do that is with accessories!

The fabulous thing about Summer accessories is that colour is everywhere, which means you can keep your outfit super simple (think white tank with tailored shorts or a neutral dress) and let your accessories take centre stage. Also, when the weather starts turning the corner into Autumn Avenue, you can hang onto that piece of Summer with your accessories!

I’ve had a little search of the internet to find the most colourful and affordable accessories you can own right now, with just one little click…

1. Colette by Colette Hayman ‘Glamour Evening’ Earrings ($12.95) // 2. Forever New ‘Aleda’ Enamel Bangle Set ($19.99) // 3. Sportsgirl ‘Origami’ Plate Necklace (on sale $9.95) // 4. Secret Santa Gifts Under $20

November 15, 2012 in Lifestyle

For those of us that work in an office, this time of year sees that familiar email sent to all staff, and you will have one of two reactions: “yay!” or “delete!”. The email I’m referring to? Secret Santa!

As you can probably guess, I’m one of the “yay!” sayers. I love buying gifts for other people – yes, even my fellow co-workers! I like to try and find the right item that will guarantee a happy face when they unwrap their gift.

Sometimes we don’t know the person we have been given all that well, which can be a bit challenging. The gift buying process can also be made more difficult by the budget that is set – usually under $20.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun searching around to find your colleague a fantastic gift.

I’ve done some in depth research and have found some great options for you (and me!) to purchase for the people we spend so much of our days with…

 1. Little Miss Sunshine Mug from Peter’s of Kensington ($12.00) // 2. Forever New ‘Rita’ Retro Handset ($19.99) // 3. Keep Cup ‘AFL Series’ ($13.95–$17.95) // 4. kikki.K 2013 ‘Happy’ Weekly Diary ($16.95) // 5. Charging Charlie from The Gifted Man ($19.95) // 6. Skybar Wine Traveller from Dan Murphy’s ($19.99) // 7. Witchery Neon Cosmetic Bag ($16.95) // 8. Sportsgirl ‘Ferris Wheel’ Photo Frame ($19.95)

Are you participating in a workplace Secret Santa? What will you be buying your colleague?

Sonia. xx

Colour Me Chic…Orange

October 18, 2012 in Beauty, Fashion

It’s been a long time between drinks – or colours, should we say! The last time we coloured your world was back in August with the colour pink.

Seeing as it’s high time for another hue, we decided to pick a colour that is bright, happy and super hot for summer…orange!

Orange is such a vibrant colour that is perfect for the warm, sunny weather, looks great as a subtle pastel or bright neon, and suits just about everyone.

“But how would I wear orange without looking like a council worker?” I hear you ask.

Well unless your name is Bruce and you’re wearing a hi-vis vest while leaning on a shovel, you can rest assure that you’ll look just fine! In fact, our friend B from B Being Cool recently wrote a guest post over on Styling You with loads of great tips on how to wear orange.

Here are some sassy citrus picks that will have you saying “orange you glad I wore this colour?” (yes I am the queen of dorky jokes)…!

1. Colette by Colette Hayman Metal Plate Tote in Orange ($49.95) // 2. Nicole by OPI in ‘Fresh Squeezed’ ($14.95) // 3. Seduce ‘Neon Nights’ Belt from The Iconic ($24.95) // 4. Nerine Anne Designs ‘Bardot’ Earrings in Tangerine ($22.00) // 5. Sportsgirl Coloured Denim Jacket in Melon ($89.95) // 6. Colette by Colette Hayman Multi Wristwear in Orange ($14.95) // 7. Urge ‘Florida’ Sandal from StyleTread ($99.95) // 8. Country Road Gathered Dress ($149.00)

Will you be rocking the colour orange this summer? What’s your best dorky joke?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

5 Short Dresses For Spring

October 4, 2012 in Fashion

The warmer weather is definitely upon us…which for me means rocking a dress more often! I love dresses. I have always said they are an instant outfit – throw one on and you are ready to go (almost).

We previously featured 5 maxi dresses for Spring, now it’s time to raise the hemline in line with the temperature and take a look at some shorter dresses!

I am definitely a short dress girl. Just above the knee, or a couple of inches above the knee, seems to work best for me. In the office, I tend to add tights or leggings underneath and on the weekends, I either rock a pair of jewelled sandals during the day or a great pair of heels for a night out.

Here are five sassy short dresses to get you twirling…

1. Forever New ‘Annie’ Printed Shift Dress ($119.99)

This Forever New dress has a very cool vibe to it, with its digital print – perfect for the warmer weather. A great little number to dress down for a weekend BBQ or dress up for cocktails in the city.

2. Cue ‘Shape Neckline’ Dress in Coral ($269.00)

This is a fabulous dress with an all-figures-flattering silhouette, and comes in coral, off white and citrus. I do love a Cue dress. The fabric is always divine, the cut impeccable and the quality exceptional. In fact, I wore a beautiful floral Cue dress to my engagement party last year which I still completely adore and try to find any excuse to wear again!

3. Sportsgirl ‘Easy’ Shift Dress in Citrus ($89.95)

This versatile little number comes in citrus, red, black and ocean blue. It has an unexpected cut out detail on the back, which adds an element of interest. Pop a blazer over the top and wear it to work, add a statement necklace and you’re ready for an evening out!

4. Witchery Peplum Detail Dress ($249.95)

I am madly in love with this dress. From the fabric, to the fit. The peplum, to the metallic. This dress just oozes glamour and sophistication. A very special addition to the wardrobe, worthy of any very special event.

5. MinkPink ‘Feeling Blue’ Dress from SurfStitch ($89.99)

Floral is definitely a trend that’s here to stay for Spring and Summer. These gorgeous frock has a bit of a 50s vibe to it. Wear it on a date to the beach for ice cream with the guy you’re going steady with or to a drive-in movie. Ahh, Happy Days…!

Are you a short dress fan? How do you like to wear yours?

Ravishing In Red (Lipstick)

September 20, 2012 in Beauty

There’s just something about a red lip, isn’t there? Something chic. Feminine. Dramatic. Beautiful. Classic.

A red lip never goes out of fashion. In fact, Miranda Kerr recently revealed that on date night with her husband (yes, Mr Orlando Bloom), she will simply pull back her hair, put on some eyeliner and finish with red lipstick.

Another favourite fashionista of ours, the fabulous Andrea from Fox In Flats, created her first ever Style Dare this time last year by – yep, you guessed it – daring her readers to wear red lipstick every day for seven days straight. And she’s at it again, celebrating the first anniversary of the Style Dares by reigniting the Red Lip Dare. Why? Andrea explains…

I’d been avoiding wearing red lipstick since the early ’90s, after a couple of boneheads at uni teased me about it. But challenging myself to give red lippy another go after all these years was great because it came with a very unexpected side-effect: I became more noticeable.

My regular local barista eyed me with an approving glint. The mums at school drop-off did a double take. People kept asking me “Where are you off to?” And the women in my boxing class at the gym struggled to keep up with me. Seems it’s true what they say: red makes you go faster.

But more importantly than other people noticing me, I became more noticeable to myself.

Sing it sister!

Now, let’s be realistic. A red lip is not for the faint hearted. You’ve got to commit. And maintain it.

“But how?!” I hear you cry (or whisper, depending on where you are right now).

There are many opinions out there, but you all know me when it comes to beauty – the simpler the better.

So here are my tips for a fab red lip:

  1. Exfoliate your lips (gently) beforehand. I use a lip scrub, but you could also brush your lips with a toothbrush or warm washcloth.
  2. Apply a little bit of lip balm, such as pawpaw ointment, and allow it to settle into your lips for a good 5 minutes or more. Enough time to pour yourself a drink!
  3. Line your lips with a lip liner and for extra staying power, colour in your lips with it too.
  4. Apply your favourite red lipstick. Blot with a tissue. Apply it again.

Make sure you have a small makeup mirror with you as well your lipstick. That way you can pop into the bathroom between courses or drinks to touch up your fabulous red lip.

Here are some lipsticks, glosses and liners to get you looking ravishing in red…

 1. Sportsgirl Lipstick in ‘Bombshell’ ($9.95)

Bombshell is the perfect name for this red lipstick. I own it myself and definitely feel like a glamazon when I wear it. Don’t let the tiny pricetag fool you – Sportsgirl lipsticks pack a punch when it comes to colour and the staying power is fantastic. I’d definitely recommend this one if you are dipping your toe into the world of bright lipsticks.

2. MAC Lipstick in ‘Russian Red’ ($36.00)

Russian Red is an iconic MAC lipstick, with its universally flattering shade of red and incredible staying power, it is simply a must own. I am a huge fan of MAC lipsticks. They are an investment worth making, as the quality is second is to none and they seem to last forever. Well, almost.

3. Australis Lip Liner in ‘Fire Cracker’ ($8.95)

Remember that a lip liner is essential for the perfect red lip, so make sure you own one like this Australis lip pencil. With claims like “long-lasting”, “smudge-free” and “anti-feathering” and an itsy bitsy pricetag to boot, run don’t walk.

4. Benefit Pocket Pal Stain & Gloss ($20.00)

This double duty diva has the world famous Benetint, a rose coloured lip and cheek stain, on one end and a clear lip gloss on the other. Simply apply the Benetint stain to your lips, let it dry and then finish with the gloss. Two-two easy!

5. Australis Lip Gloss in ‘Bollywood’ ($11.95)

Australis lip glosses are nifty little numbers, with their beautiful high pigment colours, glossy (not sticky) texture and lovely subtle fragrance of lychee. Another great product to add to your lip gloss collection which, if you’re anything like me, seem to all congregate in your handbag…and all seem to be in similar shades. Hmmm.

Pucker up and tell us! Did you take part in the Fox In Flats Red Lip Dare? What is your favourite red lipstick?

Stay Chic,

Sonia. xx

An easy way to start is with the ever faithful blazer. It is a great little versatile piece, as it can take you from weekday to weekend. You can work the corporate look by wearing your blazer over a dress or with a top and pencil skirt, or keep it cool and casual over a great printed t-shirt, jeans and ballet flats.

 1. Sussan Flamingo Blazer ($119.95)

2. Cotton On Sport Luxe Blazer ($59.95)

3. Sussan Textured Crop Jacket ($129.95)

3 Handbag Styles To Carry On With

August 16, 2012 in Fashion

You could be having a bad hair, fighting a battle with a giant pimple the size of Mount Vesuvius on your chin or be feeling…for want of a better word, frumpy – but none of that matters when it comes to buying a new handbag!

Accessories echo the trends of the season, and handbags are no exception. There are so many fabulous options out there for every budget, which means that buying into a trend doesn’t have to just be about your clothes – it can also be about your handbag. And you’ve gotta love that!

Here are 3 styles of handbags that you can carry on with…

1. Kate Hill ‘Sadie’ Tote ($79.99)

2. ModCloth ‘Verde and Night’ Bag ($64.99)

3. Pauls Boutique ‘Maisy’ Bag from Topshop ($91.17)

4. Forever New ‘Penny’ Mini Bowler Bag ($39.99)

Ladylike is a fabulous style for the corporate world, brunch with the girls or a romantic dinner for two. The ladylike colour scheme can range from pretty pastels, such as the picks from Kate Hill and Topshop, to gorgeous jewel tones, such as the ModCloth and Forever New beauties. A trend that is timeless, in my opinion!

 1. ModCloth ‘On The Polka Dot’ Bag ($59.99)

2. PeepToe ‘Lady Jacqui’ Bag ($159.00)

3. ASOS Floral Envelope Clutch With Leather Trim (on sale $44.04)

4. Marc By Marc Jacobs ‘Zora’ Shopper Tote from Shopbop ($66.96)

You’d have to be living under a rock (or be a brand new Shop Me Chic reader) to not know that leopard is my absolute favourite print. I actually consider it a neutral because it goes with pretty much anything. Whether you love leopard like me, zebra, polka dots or floral, there’s a print to suit everyone!

1. Forever New ‘Pop’ Fold Over Clutch ($34.99)

2. Sportsgirl ‘Ashley’ Colour Block Bag ($59.95)

3. Colette Jersey Panel Turnlock Bag ($39.95)

4. Mimco ‘Pioneer’ Tote ($550.00)

Sport Luxe is a huge trend for Spring and Summer, as the fabulous ladies at Sportsgirl explain: “Give your personal style the winning edge with this season’s hot sports luxe trend. Leather, neon, mesh and cut-out details are the perfect nod to this straight-off-the-runway trend.”

Have you purchased a new handbag recently? What’s your favourite handbag that you own? We want to know!

Colour Me Chic…Yellow

May 29, 2012 in Beauty, Fashion

This is such a fun series! We take a colour (turquoise and coral previously) and pick the very best fashion, accessories and beauty products in that particular colour.

Today we’re colouring your world the bright, sunny shade of yellow!

The easiest way to inject some yellow into your beauty routine is with nail polish. Pastel, bright, neon – let your fingers do the talking!

Nubar ‘Mello Yellow’ from Salon Style ($11.88)

Hello Darling in ‘Rubber Duckie’ ($18.95)

China Glaze ‘Lemon Fizz’ from Crush Cosmetics ($10.95)

A happy colour like yellow means accessories to make you smile. I’m loving the neon ’Flavia’ bag from Luxe by Lulu – how amazing is that colour?!

Colette Accessories Padlock + Stitching Wallet ($29.95)

Sportsgirl Bordered Gem Studs in ‘Amber’ ($9.95)

Luxe By Lulu ‘Flavia’ Handbag ($46.50)

Sometimes there’s nothing better than keeping your outfit incredibly simple and then having an unexpected pop of colour. The stunning Topshop neon lace dress is an outfit in itself.

Cocolatte Coloured Jeans ($14.99)

Dotti British Ponte Skater Skirt (on sale $29.95)

Topshop Neon Lace Flippy Dress (approx $73.92)

I’ve always had a weakness for statement shoes and these babies are definitely making a statement – loud and clear! The ASOS ballet flats would look especially cute with a pair of cuffed jeans, striped top and leopard print scarf. Of course I had to get leopard print somewhere in this post!

Topshop Platform Pointed Courts (approx $80.35)

ASOS ‘Lottie’ Leather Ballet Flats ($34.00)

Tony Bianco ‘JORCA2′ Heels from Wanted Shoes ($179.95)

And they are my yellow picks!

Want to join in with our Colour Me Chic fun? Tell us how you’re wearing yellow on Twitter with the hashtag #colourmechic or post a pic on Facebook!

We love hearing your suggestions, so let us know what colour you would like to see on our next Colour Me Chic post.
