Summer Reading List

January 11, 2013 in Lifestyle

Something I don’t often talk about is how much of a book nerd I am. I absolutely love reading. I love the feeling of getting lost in a book. Soaking up every last word and my imagination pouring it back out to me as if I’m watching a movie.

If we are talking novels, I’m your typical ‘chicklit’ kinda gal. But I also love biography’s, reading someone’s story and feeling like you are chatting with them over a coffee. And it’s a little dorky, but I love ‘how to’ type books: cooking, cleaning, home keeping, fashion, beauty, parenting, relationships, anything that promises to give me knowledge to do things a little better.

Usually before the start of each Summer, I pile up a list of books I want to read. This Summer I read two books and that is it (you’ll find reviews of those coming up on Sassi Sam next week) so instead, I’ve put a Summer Reading List for you just to take some inspiration from when you’re looking for your next read.

1. Strictly Confidential by Roxy Jacenko from Book World ($19.99)

I’ve read this book more times than I can count. I find Roxy incredibly talented and her writing is witty, easy to read and enjoyable. With a Jazzy Lou sequel in the making, if you haven’t read Strictly Confidential yet now is the perfect time!

2. Martha Stewarts Homekeeping Handbook from The Book Depository ($37.11)

Remember what I said about loving ‘how to’ books? Well this is the bible when it comes to home keeping. Want to know the best way to get a stain out? Martha has the answer in this book. Need some home organisation tips? Martha can sort that out. Daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal cleaning to do lists? Martha has done them for you – just photocopy and stick them on the fridge!

3. Shopaholic & Baby by Sophie Kinsella from The Book Depository ($8.38)

This is my favourite book from the Shopaholic series. Sophie Kinsella is a brilliant writer and Becky Bloomwood is one of my favourite fictional characters.

4. Breakfast At Tiffany’s by Truman Capote from Book World ($7.99)

This is a wish list book that I have snuck in. Penguin are launching a collection of ‘pink’ books in March (available for pre-order now) and donating $1 from each sale to the McGrath Foundation. Can’t beat a classic story and a worthy cause!

5. Skinnydipping by Bethenny Frankel from Amazon ($10.87)

You may remember that I reviewed Skinnydipping a little while back. It’s a hilarious book with a highly loveable character and a fun, easy to read story line. I’m hoping there will be a sequel!

What’s making your reading list lately? Do you have a few ‘all time’ favourite books?

Stay Chic,

Melinda x

The Friday Five

September 28, 2012 in Beauty, Lifestyle

Happy Friday and welcome to another addition of The Friday Five!

On the last Friday of every month Sonia and I take turns in sharing five of our favourite products or items that we are loving.

As I celebrated my 23rd birthday this month, I became a little more concerned with my anti-aging prevention routine and tried to schedule in some regular ‘me time’ as well.

Here is my Friday Five for September:

1. Royal Doulton – 1815 Green Tea Cup from Peter’s of Kensington ($5.50)

Sonia first shared this tea cup back in the Colour My Home: Mint post and since, it has had a special place on my kitchen shelves. I love sitting down to a peppermint tea out of this cup and enjoying five minutes of ‘me time’ in the afternoon.

2. John Plunkett Advanced Instant Wrinkle Filler from Plunketts ($39.95)*

This is a wonder product. Fills wrinkles, smooths bumps and is actually quite a nifty foundation primer.

3. Skinnydipping By Bethenny Frankel from The Book Depository ($12.94)

I reviewed this over on Sassi Sam in August but I loved it so much, I am including it in this months Friday Five. I am holding out for a sequel and hope that it one day gets turned into a movie.

4. 100% Certified Organic Rosehip Oil from MooGoo ($12.00)

Rosehip Oil is one of those products that everyone talks about yet I am still not exactly sure what I am supposed to do with it. Nevertheless, I smother it on my face and neck morning and night to hydrate my skin, maintain my youthful appearance and prevent getting a ‘turkey neck’ when I get to be a cute, little grandmother (at least, I am hoping it does all of those things).

5. Fresita Strawberry Sparkling from Dan Murphy’s ($13.99)

This is absolutely delicious. In fact, I may be sipping on a glass as I type this! The only fault? Possibly a little too yummy… quite easy to work through an entire bottle!

What products are you loving this month? Do you know much about Rosehip Oil and how I should be using it?

Stay Chic,

Melinda. xx

On The Bookshelf: Five Books For Kids

March 7, 2012 in Children

Reading with your children is one of the best gifts you can give them. With so many to choose from (and most with adorable illustrations) it can be hard not to fill up an entire bookshelf before your baby is even born (yes, I really did this!). Here are our top five books for your little ones bookshelf:

Possum Magic – $6.19

This book is a favourite from my childhood. A beautifully written (and illustrated) Australian book about two possums named Hush and Grandma Poss. For less than ten dollars and free shipping, there is no reason not to add this beautiful book to your book collection!

Green Eggs and Ham – $6.97

Who didn’t read this book as a kid? This Dr.Seuss favourite is such a fun book to read and a great way to show your fussy eater that if we try something new, we just might like it!

Mummy, Mummy, What’s in your Tummy? – $9.76

This is such a cute book to read to an upcoming big brother or big sister. It isn’t very informative in terms of the baby (so perhaps pair it with another book) but it is a very entertaining way to teach your toddler why your belly is growing bigger everyday.

Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes – $9.76

This is another Mem Fox book which is a favourite bedtime book in our house. It rhymes beautifully and shows different babies from different backgrounds and how they all have “ten little fingers, and ten little toes”.

We’re Going On A Bear Hunt – $7.06

This is another childhood favourite and one I have read to my own children time and time again. “We’re going on a bear hunt, we’re going to catch a big one!”.

So there you have five new books to put on the bedtime story rotation for less than fifty dollars (a total of $39.74 with free shipping).

What are your favourite childrens books? Happy Reading!

Baby, You’re Solid!

February 29, 2012 in Children

Starting solids is a hugely exciting milestone in your little ones life. It can also be emotional (they are growing up too quickly!) and a little scary especially if you’re a first time parent.

Here are Shop Me Chic’s favourite (practical, affordable and of course, chic) products to cover all of your solids needs.

Top 100 Baby Purees by Annabel Karmel

This is a great books with countless easy recipes. It starts with ‘first purees’ which are single vegetables or fruits, progresses to mixed purees (carrot and apple, banana and avocado etc) and goes right through to little risottos, pastas and other easy meals for an older baby.

At just $13.24 (and free shipping) from The Book Depository, there is no excuse not to try it out!

Qubies by Miinki Moop

Qubies are a fabulous way to store home made baby food, breastmilk or (when you move on from the puree phase) leftover stock, pesto etc.

They are BPA, Phthalate and PVC free, dishwasher friendly and each ‘qube’ holds 30mL of liquid.

Simply pour your babyfood into the tray, pop on the silicone lid and freeze. The non stick lid allows you to remove only the amount of cubes you need and put the rest back into the freezer.

Prices vary depending on the stockist. Babies R Us currently have them for $14.99.

Skip Hop Tuck Away Owl bib

This ticks all the boxes – chic, affordable and practical. This bib is water resistent, BPA free and has a velco closing, tuck away pouch for storing dirty bibs when you’re out and about.

$13.95 from Baby’s Got Style

Take & Toss Bowls with Lids

These little bowls come in a pack of six in a variety of bright colours. They are perfect for travelling, for snacks or even as bowls at home. They are BPA, Polycarbonate and Epoxy and are less than seven dollars from Big W.

Oobi Baby Bib in Whale print

This is a little more ‘chic’ than practical. Oobi make their bibs from 100% cotton with a towel backing and who can resist that cute whale print? Also check out the matching Sunday Suit!

$12.95 from Little Styles.

Food Face Plate

This isn’t just fun for your little one to eat off, but fun for mum or dad to ‘play’ with! This has been a huge hit with my toddler – to little ones, presentation is everything.

Available in ‘Ms’ (shown above) or ‘Fred’

Boon Groovy Interlocking Plate, Bowl and Cutlery set.

This little set has everything you need once your baby or toddler is determined to feed themselves. A bowl, a plate and two ‘dipping’ (or snack sized) bowls in bright, fun colours.

$17.60 with free shipping from Zanui

Do you have any favourite products for parents diving into the solids world?

Happy Shopping!
